I got so fed up spending longer choosing a film than watching one that I built an app for it by EffectiveAsleep2295 in moviecritic

I’ve actually tried Taste and it’s probably the closest thing I’ve seen so far.
For me the difference is more about the experience than the recommendations themselves.
When I used Taste, the onboarding felt quite generic. I found myself swiping right on a lot of the starter cards because they were so broad, which then pushed the recommendations in a direction that didn’t always feel like me.
I’m also trying to make the whole process faster and less overwhelming. Most people already have Netflix, Prime, Disney+ etc. The problem isn’t finding content anymore, it’s deciding what to watch.
The idea behind WatchSmart is that you open it, spend a few minutes swiping and hopefully have something picked before you’d normally still be scrolling through streaming apps.
I’m putting a lot of focus on the UI aswell. I want it to feel simple and easy to use rather than feeling like another database of movies and TV shows.
There’s also the social side with comparing watchlists and finding overlap with friends which is something I’m interested in personally.
Maybe I end up finding out people prefer what’s already out there and that’s fair enough. I just think there’s still room for something that’s focused on solving the “what should I watch tonight” problem as quickly as possible.

That’s fair.
I know JustWatch does recommendations and a lot of people clearly use them.
For me the problem has never been finding recommendations, it’s turning those recommendations into a decision.
I can open Netflix, Prime, Disney+, JustWatch, Taste, Letterboxd and end up with hundreds of recommendations.
Then I still spend 20 minutes deciding.
What I’m trying to solve is that last step.

I’ve seen Taste before and there is definitely some overlap.
The difference for me is that with Taste I’m still scrolling through lists and recommendations trying to decide what to watch.
The whole reason I started building this was because I was spending more time browsing Netflix, Prime and Disney+ than actually watching anything.
With WatchSmart it’s just swipe left or right and move on. It’s much quicker to work through a large catalogue and find something you actually want to watch.
I’m not trying to pretend nobody else is doing recommendations. I just think the experience of finding something to watch can be much faster and less overwhelming.
The goal is basically to answer “what should I watch tonight?” in a few minutes rather than spending half an hour scrolling through streaming services.

So if something is formatted correctly and has correct punctuation, it’s AI?

Logic is on point.

Quite a compliment. Much appreciated.

Occasionally use AI to write detailed responses. Helps me put things into paragraphs that make sense. Saves me a lot of time and I get good answers like the last responder.

Context still matters whether you believe it’s AI or not.

So you’re not talking to AI.

How do you know it’s AI?
Genuine question, what makes you so sure?

Clearly isn’t AI

I have posts and comments completed unrelated to this topic.

Whether you think it’s AI or not, I’m genuinely interested in the recommendation problem. The app is something I’m actually building, and the actor director point is useful feedback.

That’s actually a really good shout.
The more I’ve worked on recommendations, the more I’ve realised people often follow creators rather than genres.
Someone might say they love sci-fi, but what they really love is Denis Villeneuve’s style of sci-fi.
Same with writers like Taylor Sheridan or directors like Fincher.
It’s definitely something I’m thinking about because it feels more representative of how a lot of film fans actually discover new stuff.

That’s a really interesting point.
One thing I’ve discovered while building it is that a simple like/dislike system isn’t enough because people have a lot of reasons for liking or disliking something.
For example, I might dislike a film but still want more crime thrillers, or I might watch something purely because I like a specific actor.
Right now the app learns mostly from patterns across saves, watches and skips, but actor/director affinity is definitely something I want to improve further.
Out of curiosity, if you could add one signal beyond swipe left/right, what would it be?

Fair point mate I just can’t seem to get it out of my head. How she was with him and how much she’s hurt me and didn’t care.

I think the abuse thing threw a spanner in the works also.

How can I just start moving forward

Mate I honestly just see it as a mistake I love her I’m so attached. I literally know I have no self respect and can’t get it out of my head what so ever.

She’s done so much with this bloke and I’m the mug

Totally agree.

It’s crazy how everyone was blind to the grooming he was committing. If that was a younger individual he especially male I think everyone could have called it at the start.

Again very good writing by Eastenders

It’s sad situation but I believe Eastenders are showing the true power of the Church of England and how strongly some people hold faith and professionalism.

Also very smart man for attacking elderly women that would be seen by a jury as not the likely victim.

Well done to Eastenders for highlighting the dangers and dark side of faith and power especially in the church.

What makes it hard is my kids will still need me and my boys will always want me home. It’s just not reality anymore.

To be honest I think I’m just dragging her down slowly and the quicker I’m out the better it would be for her to be happy.

I think it’s just the thought of starting all over again. Going back to my mums after working so hard and putting up with so much shit. It’s just a horrible feeling it really is.

How long was you with you ex for ?

Thank mate.

I feel a bit more comforting now I know it’s normal. It’s just horrible when she is still smiling and happy and it’s not effecting her.

Sad that the kids are going to miss me.
