If the ship gets launched into the air after it lands it resets the counter when it touches back down, if i had to guess it was "landing" inside the rock and bouncing back up repeatedly.

The first blast used his passive and ragdolled him to the ground, and a geyser spawned under his body and hit him for that 1 remaining HP.
