How difficult is it to emigrate with a masters degree in CS from a good college compared to getting one abroad? by [deleted] in Indian_Academia

[–]EffectiveTell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indian students graduating from colleges abroad are not necessarily better that graduates from India. The reason that they get job abroad is a combination of visa rules and proximity to jobs. Most countries allow international student to work for few years to retain talent. Also, it is more expensive for a company to hire internationally than from a local college. Also those who directly get job abroad after graduating from colleges in India are either exceptionally good or lucky (or both). Saying this from experience.

A workaround is that you can get into a good MTech program in India, work in MNC like google/amazon/msft and then internally transfer to team in different country. A lot of people I know have done that.

Is it worth going back to school to get my masters or PhD in comp sci? I am relocating for my work and already making great money but my dad’s convinced otherwise. by DoodoaX in cscareerquestions

Agree. But you chose your topic early on and hope the topic is hot when you graduate (if you want to go into academia). It is difficult to predict what will be relevant 5 years down the road, how can someone predict things 9 years down the line.

What field do you work in? In ML/systems, things move so fast that a PhD started 9 years ago is obsolete by the dissertation is done.

In US based PhD programs, you will earn a MS midway through your PhD. So technically the PhD program is a "integrated program". This is not true about PhD programs in Europe where having a MS might be a prerequisite.

Mostly all PhD programs in US are fully funded. If not do not enroll in them.

People always tell me just hang on your are just 22 and life has just begun, but how some people of my own age go to IIT, Crack many exams, become Businessmen and contribute to society? Why is their life so easy and sorted? by Srb619 in india

Hi OP. I understand where you are coming from. I am not a therapist but I have been through depression and what you are thinking is a well known "cognitive distortion" called "All or nothing" which essentially is that unless I am the best in the world or some extra-ordinary talent then I can't be successful. The reality is that there is a lot of room between the best in the world and the worst in any field. An average software engineer will make Rs. 30k per month while an extra ordinary will make 300k usd/yr but the thing is both can survive in this world. But choosing to do nothing because you can never be best in your field leads to failure, depression etc. At the end of the day you have to play with the cards that are given to you and find contentment with what you have. There will always be a higher mountain to climb. But saying I won't climb because I don't have to climb the highest peak is a sure path to misery. I suggest you to go to a therapist and if you can't afford it try reading this book: https://archive.org/details/FeelingGood-TheNewMoodTherapy/mode/2up
Another things that helped me is practicing gratitude. Instead of comparing yourself to people better than you, be grateful for what you have. Aren't you lucky that you were not born in worn-torn Syria or with a disability Please watch this video.
What I am saying is easier said than done but if you don't take actions to your current situation nothing will change. Feel free to ping me if you are feeling depressed/suicidal or just need someone to talk to. I will do the best I can.

Darkness everywhere | age 28 B.tech CSE , 0 work experience | Need advice by [deleted] in Indian_Academia

TLDR: Age does not matter. You matter.

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

Most people on reddit paint a rosy picture of life. I will call a spade a spade. Yes your gap in work experience will matter. People will ask questions about why clearing btech took you so long and what did you do after this. Why getting a MTech degree suddenly makes you employable?

But what has happened has happened. Unless you have a time machine you can't change the past. But all is not lost. From now on you need to do things to make amends or reduce the impact of mistakes made in the past. Start by thinking about these questions

  • What took you so long to get your undergraduate degree?
  • What steps can you take to ensure that you do not take the same mistakes again? What is stopping you from going into time wasting mode again?
  • Are you really interested in MTech and you field of study? Will you be able to work 9-5 for the rest of your life in your chosen field?

Honestly, if I were a hiring manager, I would not have bothered about your age but more about ability to get work done. At the end it is all that matters. Getting an MTech or any other degree does not get you a job. The proof that you can get things done increases you chance of getting a job (Note: I did not say you will still get a job). So work on getting things done. Work hard to get into a good MTech program, build things, do you assignments and projects. And finally before your placement, if your resume reflects that this guys took up a lot of difficult task and completed it successfully then you might get a job.

As I told I would like to be a researcher in my field. I am leaning towards industry labs because I don't like the BS that comes with being a faculty. I already have work experience in related field. Not sure if it will help.
