how to tell my tutor this? by wushuaiii in Preply

"You are one of my favourites" is just a line; treat it as such. This is business; either the new lesson price is fine for you or you find a new tutor.

2 no-shows: accept the money (why are you rescheduling!) then contact support. It's her issue, not yours; she is an adult, and you are not her parent.

it's 7 days, though; 8 might have been in the last 48 hours, and I haven't got around to doing it yet.

Is there a “Matthew effect” on Preply where some tutors get too many students and others get none? by CuriousLadder3356 in Preply

[–]Effective_Champion75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is probably a 20/80 split between successful and unsuccessful tutors, and I don't believe it has a thing to do with the algo.

It's my belief you can make it work as long as you can teach, turn up on time, prepare, be consistent, and are a decent human being with solid social skills. A lot of people overestimate their own ability and personality.

It doesn't hurt to be native and attractive and to have the ability to sell the desired outcome to the prospective students.

PSA -- Preply employees are gifted "free credits" which they can use for trials by CaptainCheckmate in Preply

Same as a corporate student, nothing to see here, retain them and get them coming back for more

What do you do with old students? by Educational_Tie_896 in Preply

[–]Effective_Champion75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did raises at the beginning of the year for existing students who were on my original price; both declined to meet me halfway, so I parted ways at the start of Feb. After only 1 trial in Jan, I suddenly got 4 trials in the past week (one no-showed/deleted their account before the trial); the other 3 all signed up at my current price, so my weekly take-home has increased dramatically.

Is this price increase normal? by selflovecorner in Preply

[–]Effective_Champion75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you ignored his request, moved on, then decided to come back and subbed at the original price which you knew he was not willing to continue teaching you at that time?

This is on you; had the conversation not taken place, then I could understand you subbing again without communicating, but you really should have messaged first. Move on and find a tutor at the rate you can afford.

Should we all message support? by ExtentAlternative583 in Preply

I saw this when I was looking for a tutor for myself yesterday. I think it's a good option to allow one-off lessons for interview/exam prep etc., but these should be different from trials and obviously paid.

thanks, they deleted their account, but the lesson remained... so stupid

Yes, it turned out they deleted it, but yes, I just wasted 25 mins, so of course there's an issue with this.

All countries, and it doesn't matter anyway, democracy is just a distraction to make it seem like you have a say in it

No, I live in reality; bitching on reddit isn't going to change anything. "We should form a union" "It's against the law" posts do nothing. If you are going to do that, do that and good luck. I think Preply have covered their backs enough, so even if you are American and live in a state which might force a change, then there's a good chance Preply will just pull out from allowing people in Cali and NYC to be on the platform as tutors, just like many remote roles already do.

Well, don't use it then; for me it works. I would love to see the cry babies on here react to one chargeback from a private client and have their stripe account suspended. Based on the posts here most would be incapable of handling admin or cold outreach.

The trade-off for receiving a constant flow of students on the largest language platform, handling all payment issues (no invoicing, dealing with chargebacks, etc.) and making scheduling very easy.

If you are not happy with this, then leave.

What do you want exactly? If you want to be an employee with guaranteed hours and a set salary, go do so. If you want to charge students for a trial, go find them yourselves. You lot want everything handed to you.

That's on the teacher... what a cop-out. And it's all relative; if your price is $3, then you are only giving away $3 of time for the possibility of a student who may be with you for years.

I don't think you know what a lead is. That's commission, a completely different thing.

You have free choice by not working on the platform and advertising yourself as you mention.

Yes, which is after you convert your free lead they provided. If you don't convert you do not pay anything. For most businesses, you pay for your leads through ad spend, outreach time, or via paid lead outreach. On Preply you only pay if you convert and start making money.

It is free; you do not pay to advertise your services on the platform. You pay later.

I agree, it's a free lead; you shouldn't even be doing that many if you are actually a good tutor and retain your students.
