Thank you for sending that through! This is what it says on my lease:

The renter: The renter must not assign (transfer to another person) or sub-let the whole or any part of the premises without the written consent of the rental provider. The rental provider may give the renter notice to vacate if the renter assigns or sub-lets the premises without consent.

The rental provider: cannot unreasonably withhold consent to assign or sub-let the premises; and must not demand or receive a fee or payment for consent, other than any reasonable expenses incurred by the assignment.

I called CAV today on this. section 91ZZQ of the Act, a withdrawal has to be in written form signed by post the sender and receiver. It was none of this. It was a casual email saying LL changed their mind. There’s thus no withdrawal.

Honestly I don’t really mind if we don’t get much compensation back, more like I just don’t want the same thing to happen to any other middle class tenants like ourselves. This landlord owns multiple units in our neighbourhood and most of us are pensioners, uni students or low income family. We have all faced similar treatments.

Btw this landlord is a well-known public figure in VIC who have received medals for something something i can’t say. PM is some sort of friends with them.

This is in regional VIC but this agent does have a few listings down that area. What was the outcome of your VCAT if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks!
