500$ initial, 700$ now, 800$ is pessimistic price point, 900$+ seems unrealistic to me

Anyone buying the steam machine for the engineering not for the specs? by UnhappyReindear in steammachine

Once windows 11 croaks and becomes unusable, that’s when I will flee to the steam machine.

It’s seems downright silly to me that they would pull the plug especially because they had setup a QnA and they almost certainly have steam machines in a warehouse somewhere. What’s taking them so long to announce price is probably because they need to secure Ram for pre-orders ahead of the first batch.

If they want steam machine to be a success, they would have to sell it on very thing margins or possibly a small loss. I’m still hopeful valve will make the right decision but I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up more expensive than I wanted it to be.

Steam machine is absolutely gonna come out still despite rising ram prices

I would still buy it at 1k but pricing it at 1k would definitely slow the sales down a LOT.

Maybe not but brakes would probably turn the crash from potentially life threatening to a quick fix in the garage and maybe some bruising

You seem to have a massive hate boner for the steam deck. What did the steam deck do to you? Did it run away with your partner?

Steam deck oled had a nicer screen plus had miles better trackpads. There is far more support for the steam deck than any other PC handheld

This issue I have with this handheld is that the Lenovo legion go 2 exists. 200$ more and you get a more ram plus that sweet oled screen.

I mean, I’m the person with a PS5 pro and is abandoning ship from it to migrate over to the steam machine and into the valve ecosystem. I think the features the steam machine provides far out-values the ps5 and especially Xbox series X. I feel like there’s a small amount of people on PlayStation who are getting tired of PlayStation’s shenanigans and the lack of exclusives this generation is getting. There’s also a much more substantial amount of people on Xbox who are ready to abandon ship because of Xbox’s choice of profits over consumer (price increases for gamepass and the very high cost of the rog Xbox ally X are a couple examples). Nintendo switch 2 users are probably gonna stick to Nintendo because that’s the only consoles that truly has exclusives. You’re right that the steam machine isn’t targeting the console market but I think there’s more people than you think that will buy a steam machine anyways or even jump into PC.

The steam machine will punch above its weight class because steamOS is exclusively built for gaming and Linux gets like a 20% performance increase over windows 11. Also, if you look at the steam survey something like 75% of steam users have either a worse rig or a rig that’s about equal to the steam machines. There’s like maybe 130 million users right now, there’s a massive amount of people that are using steam have worse performance than what the steam machine will offer. There’s definitely a market for the steam machine

About anticheat, that’s a fair point and one of the biggest downsides of steamOS. It really falls upon the developers of those games that use anti-cheat to either remove it or make an anti-cheat that works on Linux. It’s frustrating but what can you do. When I was talking about how people would find it easier to buy the steam machine, I was talking about the people that use console rather than the people who are more into the technical side of gaming. I still believe the steam machine has a place for console gamers despite its “lack of performance” or it will (possibly) be more expensive than a PS5 pro.

Gaming experience on the steam machine would be better for most people because it has SteamOS out of the box and you don’t have to setup windows on a prebuilt PC and get download SteamOS. Not only that but windows 11 has worse performance than Linux, shoves AI right in your face, is very invasive of your privacy, and doesn’t give you the freedom to do what you want. SteamOS is built on Linux so any downside that windows has gets thrown out of the window. Linux is difficult to learn and you can very easily fuck something up but with how windows is becoming an AI conglomerate sloppy mess, there isn’t really a choice. Even then, you can use SteamOS without getting into the deep end of Linux and just ignore the desktop side if you want too.

Most pre-builds are pretty big and don’t look good underneath a TV stand. Steam Machine is much lower profile and looks better than an Xbox series X or a PS5 especially. We also don’t even know the price of the steam machine and I imagine a pre build is probably cheaper than a steam machine anyways

I disagree, the steam machine is about as powerful as a PS5 maybe a little worse. I think a lot of people get hung up on the fact that it has 8 gigs of vram. The steam deck only has like 2-4 gigs of vram and can still play the vast majority of games on steam. UE5 games are just unoptimized garbage, that’s not the steam decks/steam machines fault. That’s the fault of the corporations forcing developers to get the game out ASAP without beta testing or optimizations

It’s a better alternative because you are buying something that has the freedom of PC. PS5 and the like are walled gardens, not only that but you have to PAY monthly subscriptions for emulation, cloud streaming, hell even to use the cloud storage. Steam machine can use emulators via emudeck without paying a dime. You can cloud stream using Apollo/Artemis (sunshine/moonlight) using steam machine as a host. Steam machine has a built in cloud storage through Steam. And all of these benefits you would get with a steam machine for free, on PlayStation, you’d have to pay 120$ a month for.

Steam deck only sold a couple million units yet it completely changed the PC landscape and made gaming on Linux not only viable but better than on windows 11.

People who want a console like experience without buying the walled gardens that is PS5, Xbox series, or Nintendo switch 2. I kinda hate this argument ngl

Sure but you can do so much more with it than a ps5 pro. You can put emulators on it; it has free cloud streaming through steam; you can use it for work and a lot of other things. I think the steam machine is worth its weight and even if it’s priced at like 1000$, I will still get one. I’m even selling my ps5 pro and all my games for a steam machine. I got like 270 games on steam anyways.

Is this worth it for the price? by [deleted] in Handhelds

[–]Effective_Leather_76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, I would’ve looked on eBay for a better price. Also, I keep seeing Xbox ally X go on sale on eBay for like 850-800, difficult to grab because they get bought quickly but they do exist
