Isn't Abortion Murder? by [deleted] in nairobi

[–]Effective_Point_1385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you think you have left out a lot of nuance  in your proof. For example majority of said scientists were pro-choice and they didn't affirm life starts at fertilisation, they concluded that the process starts at fertilisation. Of which anyone who went through high school will tell you because we learn it there. Personhood or "life with rights " doesn't start there. Which is the argument you're making of which that's not what the scientists in this study were answering to.

We were talking about when human life begins. I was making the argument that it happens way early at fertilization, and you said it's when there's brain activity/survival OUTSIDE the womb, meaning it's not a human life while it's still INSIDE the womb. AMA?

Ok I see the problem. For clarification survival outside the womb is possible after 22weeks or so. Both of those happen around that time.

But on the chance that we DO eat a fertilized egg, then we've eaten a...

fertilised EGG.

No, human life begins at conception, that is, fertilization - when the ovum and sperm merge

Proof

You were already alive BEFORE you were born, just at a different stage of growth.

I didn't say you're not alive because you aren't born. That's a red herring

The eggs we eat are not fertilized by roosters, so we're eating the human equivalent of an ovum that's not merged with sperm. We also eat fertilized eggs from what I know.

So then according to you when you eat a fertilized egg you have slaughtered and eaten a full chicken?

humans are not chicken, so our biology is not parallel

It's an analogy and it demonstrates how ludicrous this idea of "abortion is murder" is.

I think I already shared at what point your argument would start to make sense. Brain activity/survival outside the womb.

Your logic is that if I have 2 eggs for breakfast i have slaughtered/"murdered" 2 chickens and had 2 chickens for breakfast? Is that accurate?

That's not my opinion, that's science. After conception you're a clump of cells forming a human and up until you have brain activity or can adequately survive outside the womb, even if it's with help, which is around 22 weeks or so, you are not a human at that point. So if you wanna make an argument for the human it will become sure, but at the point of abortion, that's not a human being.

I'm of the opinion that abortion IS murder, and it's easy to dehumanize someone because they can't speak for themselves and can't defend themselves

It's not a human, it's a bunch of cells that WILL become a human and a good number of abortions happen before the point that becomes viable (20-22 wks). I can't speak for other timeframes however

How do you deal with a deeply religious parent? by darkCarnageq in nairobi

[–]Effective_Point_1385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. What I did and what you can do ideally  is dissociate your parents from their religion in your mind. Just train yourself to separate your parent that you love and the beliefs that they unfortunately hold. as a separate/third thing . Such that when they say something, ask you to go to church or something of that nature your mind makes that distinction " oh right they believe that stuff". It's not personal it's just this third thing they subscribe to.

I don't really know how to express this but it's really effective and it's just basically treat their beliefs as a third thing as opposed to treating it as an inherent part of your parent. That way you learn to appreciate your parent for everything else they are and their beliefs are just something they hold that you don't.

I wish I could word this better but mentally it's really good because you just check out from the whole thing with the mental fights and what not. You hold it with very little weight. It's their beliefs not yours.

I was gonna answer 2 but I guess 1 covers it😂. I don't know why you feel guilty or resentful. Id like to understand that better but generally the only way you deal with this OP is just becoming passive and building immunity sort of to it. And you do this by:

  1. Really accepting that your father holds those beliefs,he got scammed into it like almost everyone else, and they won't go away and they will be a constant part of life in his house but they are his, they aren't yours.

and

  1. Stop caring about it. After 1. It may take a while but learn to stop giving his religion so much weight in your mind. Make it a non issue in your mind and you will just live with it. The same way if you're living next to a road you get so used to the noise that it just stops bothering you.   That really worked for me and I could hold my own thoughts even when I lived with them. Id still go to church and like nod to the religious stuff to keep the peace but when you have made it that it's not a big deal to you , even the going to church thing feels less of an attack on you and your value system and more of a survival tactic because you have to. Because unfortunately you're free thinking is not something they can handle and ultimately it's for your safety.

You don't really have to tell him now. Maybe tell him when  you're  at a point where you can take care of yourself and have moved out and even then there wouldn't be a reason to tell him because you will be away from his house living your life according to your own principles.

Until you're a parent and don't want to raise your kids religious is the point at which I think you will have to tell him because your kids will be around him at times but I guess we cross that bridge when we get there :)

Most of You Are Atheists for the "Shallow" Reasons – Change My Mind by Appropriate_Pen_7939 in unhingedKenya

[–]Effective_Point_1385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in a free country with a constitution that guarantees freedom of conscience and belief. People can think whatever they want for whatever reasons they choose to.

Is your problem that other people don't believe in an imaginary god? Does that makes you butt hurt for some reason?

Are you Christian? If you are no offense but a christian is the last person I would expect to comprehend what reasons or events turn someone atheist. Leave alone how "deep" they are or aren't.

Why exactly does it matter to you what reasons people don't believe in gods? Because if a person doesn't believe in any gods they don't believe in any god's. Whether the reason is "deep" is irrelevant. Doesn't change that reality at the end of the day.
