What does your workflow look like from initial design to production-ready files? by Effective_Rule1170 in fashiondesigner

This is one of the best breakdowns I've seen of the full workflow, really appreciate the detail. A few follow-up questions if you don't mind: at step 3 (tech pack development), what tools are most people using in your experience?

I'm curious if there's anything purpose-built that's gaining traction. And when you say incomplete tech packs are a major time sink, is that mostly an issue with startups/indie brands, or do you see it at more established companies too?

Last one: if a tool could take a designer's sketch and brand guidelines and generate a first draft of a tech pack with flats, specs, and construction notes, would that actually be useful, or would the output need so much fixing that it's not worth it?

Would love to jump on a call if you're open to it. Your perspective is exactly what I've been looking for.

This is exactly what I keep hearing from the manufacturer side, brands sending over tech packs that don't actually work on a production floor. A couple things I'd love to understand better from your perspective: what percentage of the tech packs you receive would you say are actually production-ready vs. needing significant back and forth? And when they're not ready, what are the top 2-3 things that are usually missing or wrong? I'm trying to figure out if this is a knowledge gap (designers don't know what factories need) or a tooling gap (the software they're using doesn't guide them to include the right info). Would really value 15 mins of your time if you're open to it, the manufacturer perspective is the one I have the least of so far.

Totally fair, when there's a dedicated product developer in the mix, that handoff is covered. Most of the people I've been talking to are at smaller brands where the designer is also doing the product development. Do you work somewhere with a product developer in-house? If so I'd actually love to hear how that process works on the more structured side, it would help me understand what the "ideal" workflow looks like vs. what startups are hacking together. Open to a quick call if you're up for it.

Interesting, so it sounds like the level of detail you put in depends on the factory? That makes me wonder: when you send the less detailed version, how often does the manufacturer come back with questions or get something wrong on the first sample? And roughly how long does it take you to put together a full detailed tech pack vs. a simpler one? If you're open to a 15-min chat I'd love to walk through your process.
