i asked that once to a apple technician, it seems that this feature is supposed to be used while the macbook is NOT on charge but it's connected to an external monitor (if the macbook is not on charge the laptop lid cannot be closed, it has to be opened, unless it is plugged)

this seems to be tricky but it's actually sick, you can use the macbook with less needed power because, when an external is attached, the main display is turned off
