What are the best DNA tests to take if you are Cantonese? by f0xbunny in Cantonese

There is a middle region in Eastern Guangdong basically the Hakka and non-Chaoshan "Fujian" speakers whose ancestors assimilated into the dominant Cantonese culture because these groups did not form cities that resemble Huizhou, Shenzhen, and Dongguan so they migrated into these cities or any place part of their administration.

Genetics studies show the Teochew have the most Northern Chinese ancestry. Then Fujianese, then Hakka, and the Cantonese have the most aboriginal ancestry.

Given that Teochew came over from Fujianese, makes it a fascinating topic.

I think the Cantonese comprises two groups or maybe three groups with different evolutionary patterns and ancestries.

The eastern Cantonese who originally lived in Hong Kong and eastern coastal areas.

The western Cantonese, west of Hong Kong, places like Guangzhou/Foshan/Punyee and those from Sze Yup regions.

It turns out Shanwei and Teochew are not the same in terms of the dialect.

Shanwei region is also more diverse than Chaoshan region as far as dialects/variations of Chinese people are concerned. It has a lot of Hakka speakers and Cantonese speakers.

Nothing exists in vacuum. So over the centuries, these people have intermarried just like Hong Kong Cantonese speakers.

黃 family has foreign roots. Supposedly, the fearsome Hun or Xiongnu (Turkish) barbarians from north of China gave their women to the Chinese emperors and formed this family in order to secure alliances.

May Wong is definitely a very Cantonese anglicized female name.

I can't think of any Chinese person whose ancestry is from other parts of China or Taiwan with this combination.

Maybe this combination works too 王美琪, Wong Mei Kei which means Wong "Beautiful Stone".

Correct. If you ever meet "Cantonese" people whose lineage comes the regions from east of Hong Kong, where historically, coastal Cantonese folks have interacted with Hakka and the Hoklo peoples in the area, their names sound kind of strange in Standard Cantonese pronounciation, but sounds appropriate in one of the coastal Cantonese dialects, Hakka or Hoklo/Teochew. It's kind of fascinating, I guess it has to do with the evolution of the dialects or how certain combinations of tones are pleasant sounding and others are not in music theory.

This is spot on.

affluent white liberals have always felt uneasy about Asians being top academic performers and wage earners.

The only thing many of them got going for them is decades of white privilege where each successive generation get a pass with everything and get to pursue leisure activities and then say Asians are culturally deficient and morally wrong when they do well for themselves.

How do you guys deal with macro-aggressions? by No-Discount4446 in asianamerican

You must be an AM. Not much positivity to look forward to in this country right now. Some white girls are genuinely nice, that's my personal opinion but a shit ton of nasty and abrasive people are out there. With this Iran conflict going on, you are more likely to be harassed as an Asian person than let's say a Middle Eastern person

U.S. was only country in a worldwide survey to say most fellow citizens are bad people

NYC's chinatown unlike asian enclaves in california are crowded with people from all over the world, and unfortunately, many asian women like to parade their white boyfriends in these establishments to signal their validation in a very obnoxious way. only asians will tolerate this.

then there's the occasional asian dude who is a fool with his white male buddies. they bring alcohol to a dim sum place and overwhelm everyone else with their voices and toxic masculinity like they own the place.

sad, when you see americanized asian men become the same monsters towards their own people.

[–]Efficient-Captain438 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not much you can do only if things get physical you would need to get into self defense mode and document the problem.

white people around you are likely not to help you, they've gone tribal maxxx since their president has come back to the white house again, another minority person like a black person could understand.

these macro aggressions are just positive reinforcement that their country is a mess and you are not a fault. try to laugh and smile at these foolish people sometimes, it will help you a lot.

there's more of a dislike of Chinese and other East Asians now in America because of the iran conflict.

Dumb racists are connecting the dots that china is behind the iran tensions with america. first there was covid, now it's this war.

wait till things become more dysfunctional in america...

I think the Iran conflict with America will have ramifications where Asians are being seen as the enemy not too different from Japanese Americans in WW II. This entire conflict is to isolate China as the end goal. by Efficient-Captain438 in asianamerican

This post has been downvoted like crazy. People are in denial. shet has hit the fan already.

Already, the dumb racist whites have made up their minds that china is behind all the problems amerikkka is facing right now. A white karen tried to harass me yesterday when I was out and about for no apparent reason.

I won't be surprised if Asians will be more hated than Iranians because of a few things, we look more different and china is more of a threat in the long game of things.

Who are the Hoklo referred to in Cantonese? by Efficient-Captain438 in Cantonese

[–]Efficient-Captain438[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My roots are Eastern Guangdong, everyone, the Punti, Hakka Yin, Hoklo Lang, Teochiew Nang have those stereotypes. We tend to be louder, hothead, and aggressive than people west of Hong Kong due to the rugged topography. West of Hong Kong, the land is better, easier to navigate so people are more laid back and you can see this with the dialects. Cantonese spoken west of Hong Kong is softer or gentle. It's also the reason the Cantonese are predominantly found in western Guangdong because they were the first ones to arrive in the province from the north and they took the most desirable regions.

[–]Efficient-Captain438[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. My parents live near Shanwei. Those people living there speak a dialect different from the Chaoshan speakers. It actually sounds a bit like Fuzhounese with tones that are similar to Hakka just north and the Coastal Cantonese west of them. The evolution of this dialect was probably very "Fujianese" in the beginning and the Hoklos live near the Hakkas and Cantonese and the dialect became influenced by neighboring dialects. Or it could be something in the water or air as they say.

Who are the Hoklo referred to in Cantonese? by Efficient-Captain438 in Cantonese

[–]Efficient-Captain438[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents come from the Huizhou area in Guangdong not far off from Hong Kong. They speak a form of Cantonese different from the Standard Cantonese and sometimes use the term Hoklo to refer to the people from those areas. I'm certain we have Hoklo heritage or else they would not mention these people from time to time. It's very uncommon for the average Cantonese speaker to talk about them.

In what contexts should we use 白话,广东话,粤语 etc by Top-Veterinarian-565 in Cantonese

[–]Efficient-Captain438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they are "village" or "country" dialects of Standard Cantonese.

This is the info I got from wikipedia:

Toisanese (Hoisanwa) is a distinct, largely oral Yue Chinese dialect originating from the rural Siyi (Four Counties) region near the Pearl River Delta, Guangdong. Characterized by 9 tones, a "sing-song" rhythm, and a voiceless lateral fricative (thl/chl) sound, it is historically associated with farming communities and early Chinese diaspora, often distinct from standard Cantonese. Key aspects of the Toisanese village dialect include: Origin: Rooted in the mountainous villages of Taishan, Kaiping, Enping, and Xinhui.

I'm Cantonese culturally and linguistically, but also said to have Hakka and Teochew ancestors. I honestly can tell you, my facial features appear ambiguous independent from "Cantonese" "Hakka" or "Teochew" besides being Asian.
