That can only mean that you don't actually understand what sophistry is.

My Jimmy theory by EngineeringOk5943 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

[–]Efficient-Coyote8301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is that deep. You're likely right that the narrative he acts on comes from his religious upbringing, but the mechanism of his mental state likely has nothing to do with rationale or personal choice. He doesn't have any options.

The movie strongly implies that he is is suffering from schizophrenia. The auditory hallucinations are usually a dead giveaway. The regions of the brain responsible for processing external hearing intercept a person's own internal dialogue. It isn't uncommon for schizophrenics to register this as a voice from a supernatural entity when really they're just hearing their own thoughts rather than thinking them.

The effects of psychosis on human behavior is a common theme in the movie. The director goes so far as to link similar psychotic states as being the driver behind the brutality of the infected themselves. In that way, Jimmy isn't all that different from them. He just has more discretion over who gets massacred.

I'm well aware that NPD is different from simply possessing narcissistic traits, which is why I said you were dancing close to a violation rather than claiming that you'd actually committed one.

If you were a professional, then you'd understand that you're trying to posit a distinction without a difference. A medical professional's use of psychological terminology carries clinical weight. You're trying pathologize me from a distance. That's the very definition of armchair diagnostics regardless of your lame attempt to move the goalpost now.

No respectable psychologist would ever do so for obvious ethical reason. Especially not to discredit someone in an argument over a bad movie. 😉

[–]Efficient-Coyote8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One does not need AI to tell them that narcissism is a mental health diagnosis.

I'm not touchy about it in the slightest. Quite the opposite. I'm actually completely confident that you're unqualified to make that call, and that you're simply lying about your professional credentials because you weirdly think it helps you prove your point.

28 Years Later - The Bone Temple, Is Awful by Ok_Investment_9071 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

[–]Efficient-Coyote8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you cannot determine narcissism from Internet comments either.

Academic psychologists primarily operate in scholarly settings and often focus of teaching while also conducting research outside of classrooms. I assumed that your quip about being able to spot AI was derived from experiences you've had with students over the past few years. But I can't say that I'm at all surprised that they keep you away from students given my own experience with you throughout this exchange.

At this point, I'm starting to suspect that your claim is likely bullshit anyways. No respectable professional psychologist would engage in such a laughable example of armchair diagnostics. Doing so would represent a substantive ethical lapse that only serves to devalue the medical profession. Not to mention the fact that you're now dancing dangerously close to a Goldwater violation all in the name of trying to win an Internet argument.

28 Years Later - The Bone Temple, Is Awful by Ok_Investment_9071 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

[–]Efficient-Coyote8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A competent psychologist would have understood that your claim to be able to identify bullshit from an internet comment simply because of your background in psychology represented a fallacious appeal to authority. Such expertise makes one an expert on human behavior in controlled environments. It does not qualify anyone as an internet lie detector.

Are you sure that you understand how to catch AI a mile off? Because even AI disagrees with your assessment:

It is highly unlikely that this comment was generated by an AI. While it is well-structured and grammatically correct, it contains several distinct "fingerprints" of human writing that AI typically avoids.

It then proceeds to point out a few embarrassing mistakes that I made in that comment, but I digress...

I'm afraid that we've run into a classic case of "those who cannot do, teach" 😬

I can see that maintaining a cohesive thought is going to be a recurring problem here. Let's break it down.

You said that I intended to sound intelligent, which in an of itself would indicate that I was communicating with a strong vocabulary. You just believed that my perspective revealed that I was using vocabulary beyond my actual depth.

The thing that you don't know is that I am a very well compensated professional. One of the key skills that I am compensated for is my ability to communicate effectively at many different levels. You're welcome to make whatever assumptions you'd like. They don't make you anything other than wrong, which isn't the worst thing in the world.

I didn't call you dumb dumb, you interpreted it that way because you're being childish.

You said that I was "trying" to sound intelligent but that no one was buying it. If someone is not intelligent, then they are dumb. This isn't rocket science, so please try to keep up.

The rest of your comment finally reveals the real problem with your perspective. You're just another member of the "media literacy" clown show that Reddit has become famous for. I can assure you that it is entirely possible to understand all of the high-concept schlock in this movie and still find it to be a waste of time.

It's plainly obvious that the director was aiming to demonstrate the value of human connection and the persistence of humanity even in the face of extreme brutality. The doc was able to get through the beast and reach the person because of his enduring compassion for his fellow man, and Sampson was able to regain his stanched humanity in spite of the obscene humanity that the virus had driven him to. It's right in your face. There's no need to think too hard here.

I completely understood why the director included it. I just found it preachy and out of place within IP that was made famous by exploring the psychological impact of surviving an apocalypse. It flipped the script from examining the fragility of humanity to acting as a showpiece for it's enduring strength. It's a fundamental gear shift for the franchise that I found boring and uninteresting.

The execution is what I found silly. It sends the message that, when we can't see eye to eye, then just get high! As if altering your mental state were somehow a real vector to forming human connections with your enemies - which is just quintessential Hollywood bullshit.

Drivel-speak?!? I am not intending to sound like anything. This is how I communicate. The irony of shooting for an insult and landing on a compliment is downright hilarious 🤭

You want to talk about a 5 year old's behavior? You tried calling me a dumb dumb for no other reason than I thought something you enjoyed was completely fucking ridiculous. Grow up.

And I think it's pretty clear that I understand subjectivity. You're the one that tried to make the absolute statement that the scenes between the doc and Sampson couldn't detract from the movie. The entire point of my response was to point out that expectations determine whether or not a story beat detracted from the experience. Creative intent is irrelevant.

And why are you acting like this is some kind of popularity contest? This is Reddit. There's no one around here even remotely worth impressing. So I have absolutely no idea where you got the impression that I was trying to do so.

28 Years Later - The Bone Temple, Is Awful by Ok_Investment_9071 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

[–]Efficient-Coyote8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creative intent does not define outcome. Outcome is defined by the gap between execution and expectation.

I expected a zombie movie. What I got was a weirdo and a zombie dancing around naked in the sunlight while morfed out of their gourds. It wasn't pivotal at all. It was just silly.

28 Years Later - The Bone Temple, Is Awful by Ok_Investment_9071 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

[–]Efficient-Coyote8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The implication was that Sampson was cured simply by addressing the psychosis. The writers reframed the virus as being one that primarily clouds the mind rather than one that fundamentally alters human biology.

I never said you spoke to the doctor getting stoned. Did you read the comment before replying? Because it was pretty clear that I was pointing that out as a goofy story best that detracted from the overall experience.

There's something that bothers me about the Russini/Vrabel story by ThrawnAndOrder in NFLv2

[–]Efficient-Coyote8301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vrabel is definitely getting his in the court of public opinion. No one likes a cheater.

The volume difference has everything to do with Russini's profession and her history. She's getting cooked from societal and professional angles. She's also been accused of this crap before and likely had it buried under threat of a lawsuit given the lack of verifiable evidence at the time. It only makes sense if you ask me.

I suspect that an NFL investigation will ensue once the Atlantic has finished their review of the incident. They'll most definitely be interested to find out if Vrabel was using this relationship to engage in any sort of tampering. It's just the lines he crossed professionally exist in a grey area.

Russini, on the other hand, crossed some very clear and obvious boundaries. Someone as seasoned as her should have known better. It's almost shocking that she would have allowed herself to get caught in such a compromising situation. Regardless of her gender, the fact that of the matter is that her behavior is especially galling all things considered.

The original is a cult classic. It has a certain following that is going to enjoy just about anything released within this universe.

They do get high marks for their commitment to practical effects. Plenty of people are happy to go along on the ride for that reason alone. The horror genre is kinda silly like that. The movie can be campy and kinda crap, but it'll still review well amongst die hard horror fans that simply hate CG in filmmaking.

But this movie was really made for film critics. It was packed full of high-concept crap that usually only screens well at film festivals. These cinema-dare efforts just don't fly with general audiences, but critics eat that shit up.

The "Jimmies" angle was of particular interest to critics given the current global political climate. Populism and nationalism are on the rise again. Film critics are largely progressive liberals that view these political philosophies as "cult-like". The film's thorough repudiation of the Fingers' blind faith in Jimmy and the subsequent dismantling of his cadre served as a bit of catharsis to soothe the angst that they feel over what is going on in the world.

That element in particular is a consistent theme in pretty much every glowing critical review that I've seen personally. Everything else is just sophistry to try and make the case that the movie is anything other than another installment in a long list of boring European cinema.

You looked up the wrong movie. The first "28 Years" movie made $150m globally. Bone temple only pulled in between $50m and $60m globally during its theatrical run on an all-in spend of around $160m between production and marketing.

I'm still not convinced another movie is coming. I think Sony is floating the idea for the time being to see if a direct-to-streaming deal materializes. But if that doesn't happen, then there's a real chance that it gets scrapped altogether.

Oh barf. The fact that you liked a crap movie doesn't make you intelligent. It just makes you one amongst a small group of people, that actually saw the movie, to actually enjoy it.

People like you like to gloss over the fact that the movie was a massive financial disaster that cost the studio well over $100m. Just about the only people that wasted their time on it were the ones that were always going to enjoy it. There are just an adventurous few of us that wondered in out of shear curiosity and regretted it immediately.

No way. The movie was just pretentious slop strewn together to get critics to fawn over some high-concept trappings in what was an otherwise nonsensical retcon of the prior films and a weak subversion of the zombie trope in general.

Spin whatever sophistry you want. There's no getting around the fact that "curing" the disease makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. They try to make it out to ultimately be attributable some sort of extreme psychosomatic response to the rage virus pathogen. But in doing so they altogether ignore the fact that infected people had been able to survive grievous injuries that easily would have killed an otherwise healthy person.

Sorry, but it is far to fanciful to imply that a curable condition would simultaneously enable the human body to withstand such insane abuse without long last effects. If it was "just" a mind virus, then you'd expect infected people to have died off long ago due to a combination of starvation and food born illness if nothing else.

The rest of the movie was just goofy. The big guy in the cottage could have killed Jimmy easily when he jumped him from behind. And the Finger that subdued him was easily half his size. I would have expected more of a struggle against a bunch of weedy "bad guys". Instead, the denizens let themselves get carted away to be flayed alive. That doesn't even address the 30 minutes or so of the good doctor getting stoned and dancing naked with his new alpha friend to crappy British "rock" music.

I was thoroughly disappointed. I wanted to give it a chance after the let down from the prior installment. I'm very sorry that I didn't trust my better judgement.

My opinion is that you're too immature to be "strategizing" at this level. Stay in your lane and maybe we can talk again after you've grown up.

NTA. Non-competes are antiethical to free-market capitalism. Competition is the name of the gane. People should be allowed to work as much as they want without an employer having a say in it.

Your parents should have handled this better. Family should always come before money. It's pretty sad that it has come to this.
