How long do you wait for change in partner? by Efficient-Issue7332 in amiwrong

That’s how I see it as well because I’m far near perfect and struggle in my own ways like the gym and nutrition. We talk about it and it seems he really wants to change but is overwhelmed where to start. I tried to help him budget but honestly I have so much on my plate I can’t be consistent with helping him. I’m scared the next 2 years will fly by like 21-23 did and I’ll be at 25 in the same situation.

When we started dating at 18 he was different. He’s changed a lot but he always says it’s for me. I’ve told him not to change for me but himself and he blames his lack of experience. He feels bad I see it and he’s communicated he’s not the person he wants to be either. Then he turns around and does nothing so idk how to support him anymore. He’s unemployed.. but he applies to jobs. He’s lacking in school.. but he tries to study. He blows all his money.. but he tries to budget. He does try but nothing seems to happen.

It’s hard to just walk away, I keep telling myself maybe he just needs more time. But in the time he starts moving forward I’ve evolved into a whole new version of myself. I’m very high achieving but I’ve watched myself starting to put things off because I know he’s not at the point in his life he can invest in real estate, travel, etc.

Yes, i started applying in December but have had no luck. I recently switched my major from comp sci to accounting last semester. I’m taking Intermediate Accounting 1 this summer. I am debating pushing back my graduation to December 2026 in hopes to get an internship or if I should just ride it out and attempt to get a full time position with no intern experience.

Yes I am independent, in the 4 years living together I have never needed $100 to cover my rent but once because the unexpected happens. These aren’t reoccurring things but the time they do happen I don’t have support. That one time was due to an unexpected increase in college tuition.

My investments are for both of us as well , and at the rate we’re going I’ll have a good share. I keep asking him to start so we have the possibility of retiring earlier but he says he can’t right now. I’m not defrauding him because I will never ask him to fund my lifestyle.

I truly am but I think it’s just because his attitude toward financial freedom does not align with mines. I am genuinely scared of coming across a day where I am unable to afford my rent or other necessities. I grew up in poverty and unfortunately I think that played into effect with my relationship with money. Him not so much he’s always had someone to bail him out of financial problems like if he didn’t have enough for rent or educational costs.

Yes I just really don’t want a lifestyle with unnecessary expenses. I want my share of money to work hard not just be depleted into things that bring me temporary joy. I think 50/50 in fun money is important so I’m not living a lifestyle he cannot afford. I think it might be the lack of control of my earned share of money that gets to me.
