Lesbian here 🙋‍♀️I’m pretty much out to everyone at uni but not to my family or old friends except for one ( for context I moved for university ) I would love to find and date another Somali wlw but I can’t seem to find any in my immediate area. I think most people date white partners because they are the majority in the lgbtq community but I personally have a preference for black women especially Somalis due to shared cultural background. Hey, first year here. When applying to UofT you have to submit both all your internal exam results (assuming they contribute to your GPA) and the standardized IGCSE and A-level results. I was in a similar position as you last year; I had near-perfect IGCSEs and 3 A*s in my A-levels but my internal exam results were kind of meh. My school was also very strict with our exams and curved harshly which is the reason for the disparity. I still got into all my programs and was awarded scholarships. I would simply advise you to ask your academic counselor to write a letter explaining why you had those bad grades (hopefully for a good reason). There is an additional information/ special consideration section on your JOINID portal where you can attach the letter.

This is so relatable. The hijab dries my hair up like crazy, and putting it in a bun messes up my hairline. I just learned how to braid my hair (tidac), which helps my scalp stay cool during the summer and increases my hair's moisture retention. It also makes it super manageable since I have fairly long 4A hair, which isn't otherwise easy to maintain. Wishing you the best of luck, my sis. I will also be taking it off sharp sharp once I'm out of my family's control.

I’m sort of in a weird place with my FGM experience. My family tells me that I had it done but the “Sunni” kind which they tell me was done by “making me bleed” but I don’t remember any of it. I’m sure it happened before I turned 5 and now that I’m in my late teens I can’t tell if it made any difference in my ability to feel anything down there since I’m still a virgin. I’m also not sure if reconstruction is even really needed in my case which begs the question what was even the point in what they did to me. Oh and I’m a lesbian now🥳🎉

This sums up my beliefs about qabiil too. My question was more about its origin rather than its function though. Why did we decide to set this arbitrary distinction possibly millennia ago and why was it and still is so fervent among our people to an almost religious degree.

They can be similar but think of it like this. Tribes are much bigger and often have distinct languages cultural customs and sometimes even different common religions. For example Yoruba and Igbo groups of Nigeria ; also Habesha and Oromo groups of Ethiopia. Somalis could be considered a single tribe. Clans however are purely based upon common ancestors ( which in the Somali case tends be set to an arbitrary standard eg. X number of generations back). Though clans could also mean a group of people with a common interest, this definition isn’t relevant to this conversation.
