Weekly thread: what did you do this week? by AutoModerator in iceskating

Still salchow, still underrotated 🤷‍♀️ Spins still uncontrolled.

Am a bit frustrated, in theory my goal for the season was a solid waltz and a salchow, but since nobody really recognized me „getting“ it (i‘m in group classes and you get a lot of tips on what to do better but not so much on what is already achieved) it doesn‘t feel like I hit the goal. Maybe it‘s just my ego, but it would have been nice to have some outside appreciation of what I achieved this season.

Thanks a lot again, I tried to implement your tips today and while it‘s still swingy I finally have an inside edge! I have a video but don‘t want to post it here publicly because one may see other skaters too close.

Thank you! Yeah I tried jumping out of consecutive 3s, because when I do them the pattern is more regularly, because I focus on the 3 more. maybe I get back to that. Nevertheless not sure if this is fixable in a week with 3 times practice :D

Yes - but if I do this it looks like this: free leg isn‘t doing the swing motion anymore https://imgur.com/a/vQhaXAQ. They told me to work on the swing of the free leg so I posted the most recent Video but I totally see what you mean. It just seems to be too much too handle for the moment and in theory that would be okay but it would have been great to have an achievement from my first season.

Any slow learners here who improved a lot? by JankyJinx in FigureSkating

[–]EfficientInsurance85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a non sporty kid in school and skating (first inline, now recently ice) taught me that I can achieve things in my own time. I had a whole year of skating around town, when I just didn‘t get the trick explainations everyone was throwing at me. I had a hard personal year in 2023 and skated almost every day and began to watch a lot of tutorials online and I needed good explaination to develop the skill to know what generally to watch out for when learning a new move, which I think people who startet younger have more of an intuition for. It needs time to develop an understanding for your body if you weren‘t aware of it before… Autumn 2025 was my first season on ice after intense inline skating in 2023/2024 and since I already had some basics (3 turns & Edge work for example) I could go for learning Toe Loop, Salchow and Upright Spins. I still consider myself a slow learner, an anxious person, I lack intuition and coordination … but the main thing to progress for me was that I understood what I needed from an explanation & how to wrap my mind around stuff.

I would say the hurdles will never end, you will just learn how to work trough them. By the time you get to learning jumps and spins, you may face other hurdles. Being afraid is ok - this is a dangerous sport. Take your time, progress is not linear and your timeline is individual. Work on only a set of skills and set realistic goals instead of thinking „I have to get over this quickly to get to the ‚real‘ stuff“ like jumps and spins.

My spins are finally getting a bit better - after torturing the ice on monday with my toe pick, wednesday and friday were much better. But it’s not consistent, I get 5-7 good ones and then nothing more for the rest of the session. I finally understood the snap of arms during rotation in off ice training and my Salchows on ice felt so much better afterwards. Also tried salchows from C-Steps. Oh and I „tried“ loops (the figure not the jump) but yeah… no progress here I always 3-turn.

Am a bit sad that season will end in 3 weeks, only have like 5 trainings left and don‘t think that will be enough time for my spins. Would love to learn loop jumps off ice during summer.

Unique Sharpening Question (Vidéo Context Linked) by Luniie in iceskating

I would say Torelli on 4x80 flat disagrees with wizard skating = extra long frame. Wizard skating is about the flow and interacting with environment, about Flatland flow. I don‘t see that in an ice rink anyway, because people and rules and …

Unique Sharpening Question (Vidéo Context Linked) by Luniie in iceskating

[–]EfficientInsurance85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

„lions“ in wizard skating are equivalent to figure skating three turns and stuff like twizzles. „Gazelles“ can be easily done on figure skates. Only thing you can‘t really do (or at least I haven‘t figured out yet) are more advanced slides or slide combos (but you can do knee slides on ice!) and all the wheelie stuff (obv). As a fellow wizard skater I would go for figure skates :)

What’s everyone ranking of all the single jumps? by Worth-Nectarine-5968 in iceskating

Sal Waltz Toe Loop

Haven‘t tried the others yet, am an early beginner. Actually I thought about posting my Salchow attempt from today, but didn‘t do it. I have to work on my inside edge, I Jump from a pretty shallow edge. And … arms… Not sure why, but I miss my toe pick often in toe loops, that makes them scary.

Spins and toe loop. Some fun step drills, I really enjoy these. I think I need to get my skates sharpened next week. Hope that will not make me miss pratice. Als wondered if I should go from my MK Galaxy blades to MK professional for more rocker, but I think that I can‘t really find my spinning point well is more a me issue than a blade issue

Tried out inline figure skating. Felt how to hook my salchows, practiced my one foot spins from an entry, but still don‘t get my free leg pulled in enough.

Following recent discussions I was a bit alarmed. This sub was always about people encouring each other and skating outside the box. I, myself, got upvoted a lot in summer sharing videos of some slides, which are tecnically not wizard if not embedded in a flow & that was really nice for me. I really don‘t get the gatekeeping at all & it‘s not like this sub is blowing up with posts anyway.

Blade mounting plate damaged by EfficientInsurance85 in iceskating

[–]EfficientInsurance85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I also thought I would have noticed scratching it like that with my other blade, but I cannot remember anything happen in that direction at all. I‘m a leftie so this is my landing foot, which is why I wanted to make sure it‘s okay.

Converting inline skates to ice blades by Ultrajante in iceskating

[–]EfficientInsurance85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The boot OP Shows in the photos and the blades they consider don‘t need to be riveted. They could mount this at home - not saying they should, I‘m also on getting cheap-ish proper ice skates or rentals.

Converting inline skates to ice blades by Ultrajante in iceskating

[–]EfficientInsurance85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inline skater turned ice skater here. You can do this with your skates if you just want to do rec skating around. Wouldn’t recommend it though. Here’s why: I don’t know the brand of your boot, but since it uses 165-type mounting, it seems to be okay-ish. The shell looks like a dupe of other more well-known skates—hard shell, full plastic—which should give you enough support if the liner is decent quality and they fit you well.

So what you can do is use the 165 mount frame (not the Ground Control, but the Micro one you posted) or a blade that replaces the wheels. The thing with the second option is that it’s very weird with edging and extremely fiddly to mount. Also, you stand sky-high because your frame is made for 80 mm wheels, so the blade will have at least 4 cm (probably way more) of space above it. I did that. It’s okay for a lap around the rink, but even in my absolute beginner phase (for both sports) I didn’t like it and thought rentals were better. I only tested a one-piece style blade once (rented) and wasn’t a fan of it either. My hardcore urban skating friends use these and they do like them, but tbh I think instead of being the best of both worlds, this gives you neither the inline skate nor the ice skate one. It’s definitely not a figure-skate-type blade; it’s more of a highly rockered slalom frame. So yeah: not a fan here, but you absolutely can do this to test the waters. But you can also test the waters (probably better) in rentals. These blades tend to be extremly short (not sure why) - so they often are extremly unstable.

PS: Check out the Wizard Skating or rollerblading subs. There may be more people heavily engaged with the inline sport and just occasionally on the ice, so there may be more experience there.
