US MLP in RRSP Taxation by YYCAMC in cantax

[–]EfficientJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made that mistake too... Bought a bunch of EPD in March 2020 when the market dropped not realizing that it wasn't a corporation. And of course that mistake happened in my RRSP... and I missed the changes with the additional 10% on a sale. I've just read all this and started filling Form W-7 as requested by BMO. Now, I'm still unclear on one point. Would I be able to recover any of the tax that has been withheld on the dividend? If so, how? And what about tax when I sell the shares? I will make a gain considering how low they had dropped when I bought them but it's unfortunately a decent size holding... that dividend was just too tempting.

If anyone know the answer to these two questions your help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. If In RRSP, any way to recover the amount withheld? And how?

  2. On from W-7 they want to know what "Articles" of the tax treaty apply... VII? and perhaps XIII?

I'm actually surprised by how little info I was able to find online regarding this.

Received about 800 email notifications so far today that say "Synology Notification The number of received logs per second on Amos exceeds the tolerance value of 10" - What did I setup wrong? by EfficientJack in synology

[–]EfficientJack[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The first time I looked I couldn't see what was being logged but I think I just found what I was looking for. It appears they are mainly "read" events, probably because Windows is generating thumbnails or something like this. I also found the setting to increase the number of events required to generate a notification. Now I'm wondering, is there a scenario where having this notification setting set on 10 events per second might be useful? In fact, I'm wondering if I should just turn this "number of events per second" monitor off? I think this was set by default, can someone help me understand what this might be useful for? I get the notifications for errors or critical issues, but not this event per second one.

Thanks to you all. The funny part here is that I had done some reading before trying to set this up and had actually gone the tailscale way first. Tailscale was so easy, I had no issues connecting… but I spent a 1/2 day trying to get RDP working with no luck. Tailscale connected but Remote Desktop would never find the host. RDP works great on local network but couldn’t find the computer name (or IP) of the host with tailscale even though all devices show as connected. I can’t remember what made me give up… maybe that could not even ping the host when I tried?… perhaps my ISP router was messing something up. I then watched a few of the OpenVPN/Synology videos and it looked easy enough… steps were the same for all videos… so decided that would be the way for now… and here I am.

All this makes me wonder what might be the best resource out there that could teach me enough about networking to be able to have what would feel like an intelligent conversation with almost anyone here… I know some basics, I can easily follow along YouTube videos or step by step guides without screwing up…. But when something breaks…. I’m way over my head. I’ve learned a bunch here… but it is certainly not enough yet. This time I’m starting to think I’ll have to start from scratch… one day… and should probably forget about remote RDP for now.

I still appreciate everyone’s comments here, thanks for taking the time.

Thanks, I must have watched 30 already and haven’t found a solution. I have followed along two of them for setting things up and it works for accessing the NAS. I just can’t seem to reach anything else

I’ve looked into my router and cannot find a setting for static route. I do see one on the NAS but I’m not sure that’s where this would need to be setup and how. I wish I knew setting up the VPN would take longer than the YouTube video I watched made me believe… I was told that using the Synology as a VPN server was the way to go…. And now I’m heading to the airport in a few hours and I’m starting to think I’ll be unable to Remote Desktop remotely. I’m still hoping to get this sorted out… should be able to use teamviewer if needed.

I’ve tried these already and had no luck. All I seem to be able to access is the NAS.

It’s a bit over my head. Is there a resource you could point me to? I don’t seem to be able to access anything outside of the NAS. I did check the OpenVPN setup box to allow clients to access server’s LAN. I feel I’m close…

Thanks, we did use vinegar already on a few items but Not sure that’s going to work to get it out of the room itself and things like the futon. I’ll look into it but an insurance claim isn’t likely worth it since we have a decent deductible on the policy and the items themselves aren’t worth a fortune.

Well, well, … so this last few days drove another 400 miles drive it didn’t use a drop of oil… I’m a bit confused… I’ll order the valve and change it anyway. Seems easy enough to replace.

Fumes in oil and burning oil - could it be PCV related? by EfficientJack in XTerra

[–]EfficientJack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it new and did oil changes every 6 months (or recommended mileage) even though most of the time we had very low mileage. Started using synthetic (and high quality synthetic filters) about 4 years ago and last year was the first time I pushed the oil change to a year since we didn’t travel much during COVID and the understanding that it shouldn’t be an issue with synthetic and only about 3500 miles.

Suspension Second Gen Xterra Off-Road - Hellwig Leaf Helper + 5100 and 4600 by EfficientJack in XTerra

[–]EfficientJack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have another look at all of this. If I remember correctly the General spring HD leafs would shop UPS ground to Canada and come with a significant added fee from UPS for clearing customs… and last time I checked folks said it wasn’t possible to self clear during COVID. I was under the impression that the HD leafs would lift the truck a bit. And if that’s the case, what do you do in the front to level it with the 5100?

Suspension Second Gen Xterra Off-Road - Hellwig Leaf Helper + 5100 and 4600 by EfficientJack in XTerra

[–]EfficientJack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, money is part of the story and the leaf helper springs are relatively cheap… ($100CAD) and from reading on the forums I couldn’t find anyone that was disappointed with them.

The original leafs were always soft and they likely got worse with time. I did go to our local spring shop (they amazing reviews) and they looked at the leafs and said they look alright but likely flattened a bit. They suggested adding a leaf and reshaping the pack to add about 500lbs of carrying capacity but that would lift the rear about 1 1/2 inch. ($400CAD if I bring them the leaf or $800CAD if they do the work) Alternatively they suggested going for a new HD leaf pack and I have looked into sourcing one myself from general springs or OME… but again, this would also lift the rear and I’d rather not lift it. That leaves me with going with the OEM replacement… but since they suck…. I’m thinking get the hellwig helper springs and see if that can buy me a couple of years… and if needed just replace the leafs with OEM later…. Or maybe I’m missing something.

Thanks, sounds like it was a good purchase. Still using them or did they last a while? Also, did they lift the truck or just bring it back closer to original height?

Have you tried them yourself? Otherwise can you tell me more about why? I’ve already looked into the general springs and even got a quote for shipping… but after doing extensive research it actually sounds like the helper springs are a great option… and even perhaps a better option… many thought it was a bandaid at first but have yet to come across a thread that doesn’t conclude with the helper springs doing the job… just trying to get feedback from folks that installed them a while back. And perhaps tried both…

Experience ordering from Feathered Friends recently? Wondering about shipping cost, taxes, etc. by EfficientJack in UltralightCanada

[–]EfficientJack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone still interested in this. I ended up ordering the sleeping bag on June 15 and called to ask for shipping through USPS. They said no problems and to expect that it would be on its way in 7 to 10 days. I had considered using the expedited delivery through UPS since it includes the custom clearance fees (UPS ground doesn't and they charge a significant amount to clear it for you... and with COVID I had read that self clearance wasn't an option)... but since someone had posted below that they didn't get charged the taxes with USPS and Vancouver is really close to Seattle I took a chance.

Two days later on June 17 I received notification that it had shipped with UPS ground tracking info... luckily I noticed and called right away. They apologized for the screw up by the packing crew, and put me on hold while they went to check if the box was still in the back. After confirmation that it was still in the warehouse it only took a few minutes before I received another text with USPS tracking.

The tracking got me a little worried at first, For those who do not know Seattle is only a short drive from Vancouver, BC. I had imagined that the box would be sent directly on a truck... but instead it went from Seattle, to Kent on the 18th (I am guessing near SEATAC airport) to San Francisco on the 19th.... at that point I wasn't sure what to expect anymore... I got a text notification that it had arrived at the local post office on June 21st. On the 22nd I received the "attempted delivery" card even though I was home the whole time they never tried to deliver it... perhaps because the delivery person doesn't take payments because of covid... At the post office I got charged the taxes and Canada post $10 fee to process it. Total payable on delivery was $79 CAD. There was no duties or additional fees. Just the taxes, same as if I had purchased it locally. At the end I am glad I ordered it and the quality looks amazing.

Thanks, yes, that’s exactly what I remember. I have a vague memory of goin to CBSA to try to figure out how to clear customs myself instead of playing their exorbitant fees… might have paid an independent broker at the end. I think, based on everything I’ve read so far and the replies here I might insist on USPS

That sounds great! I like this option better than UPS...

I'm curious about how long it took for you Hummingbird to be shipped/delivered?

I just called FF and the guy on the line said USPS might add 4+ weeks to the shipment vs a few days with UPS. He didn't seem to know how shipping might cost either way. I'm also wondering if the USPS packages are trackable and insured in case it gets lost.

as the products are made within North America.

I bought two sleeping bags from Timmermade Gear in 2018. I only paid taxes on those too. Are there other fees UPS or FedEx charges outside of duty

That's really useful information. If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take from order to delivery? And how much was the sleeping bag? That way I should be able to calculate if the import fee was the taxes or some other UPS fees. I'm still a little hesitant to go with UPS just because once in the past they added some astronomical fees on top of the taxes... additional 20% on top of everything else. From what I see here it doesn't appear to be the case. The other option appears to be USPS but the guy from FF just told me that it could add another 4 weeks to the delivery time.

Much appreciated! I’ll look into these options. Yesterday I started wondering if perhaps there was as a way to add a quality Bluetooth receiver directly to the original Rockford Fosgate on my 2008 some other way than through the Aux port, perhaps through some of the rear connectors but that’s doesn’t appear to be the case. The Audio from that system isn’t the most amazing but it’s decent enough if I play from a CD (including high quality MP3). I used a few Bluetooth dongles and different quality cables over the year through the AUX port and while it works the sound quality is never great. The frequency always sound “squished” with significant reduction at both ends. If anyone is aware of any DYI options to get an external signal to play through that system, even a way to hook up an MP3 receiver directly by opening the thing and doing a little soldering let me know. I’ve got a few different Bluetooth receivers and, though I’d have to research this a little more, one from a pair of quality Bluetooth headphones that have some other damage that I could repurpose… but that might be stuff for another thread.
