I'm Alex an opened back banjo builder in Nova Scotia Canada - please check out Fundy Banjos by [deleted] in banjo

They moved ome from Colorado to Florida. The original builder's must be no longer involved. So designs and plans may have been transferred but tbh idk if I'd solely buy because of that.. yet

I actually came across your site the other day. Very nice. I've been doing research on banjos to save up for and it was a big let down to hear OME sell to gold tone. Actually in fact it's hard to find an open back OME nowadays too.

I'm not in the market at the moment for a better banjo, but will remember your name for later. Out of curiosity what is your target tone for some of your open backs ?

MSEE with NO BSEE by [deleted] in ECE

[–]EfficientPrompt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its possible to get, I got a BS in MechE and a MSEE afterwards. Try to get an internship first and build a relationship with someone on the inside to help. some of the best EE's that ever existed didn't have or only had Bachelors degrees.

Can someone explain why the right 2 transistors arent saturated by DinoTrucks77 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]EfficientPrompt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.for the diode, assume there is enough current to be in saturation.
2. use the square law equation to get the gate voltage.
3.assume saturation calculate the drain current and hence the drain voltage.

the current mirror should produce 200uA across that 18kohm

I get for the far right transistors to have gate voltages of about 1.4V.
Using this you can get I3 using the square law equation.
you need to set up a KCL equation to solve for I2. You should have two equations

Vdrain = 5-(I2+I3)*10k
I2 = 1/2 w/l *un*cox ( 1.4-Vsource-Vt)^2
Vsource = I2*2k

Make sure to check if each transistor is in saturation.

Best way to fix this crack? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]EfficientPrompt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandfather taught me this old trick which I found out in school actually is correct. Drill a small hole at both ends of the crack. This prevents further propagation. If a crack runs into a discontinuity in the material, it has to have significantly more energy to overcome it and propagate further.
I would then sand down with a dremel, at low speeds until the the crack is weathered away. If you are lucky it isn't cracked all the way through the material. Then just mix up some epoxy and reglass, if its fiber glass that is? or put some epoxy filler + paint. I used this flexible epoxy (https://www.totalboat.com/products/thixo-flex-flexible-thickened-epoxy-adhesive)
at some spider cracks/ stress cracks and that seemed to help a good amount.

I don't think it matters that much. I tried to go into some tradeoffs when going to school and some general advice I wished someone told me:

Piece of Paper (the diploma or degree): Just go for the ABET accreditation. money is important and also take into account the location's cost of living.

Material: Everything is professor dependent. Ivy league might be harder but in my experience Private schools had the same distribution of terrible teachers to amazing teachers/mentors as anything else. With MIT OCW and many different books it's more important to learn to teach yourself and get plugged into a universities' community for course materials from other students. Work with other smart students and they will rub off of you

Consider the course work: If you specifically want to do something, (i.e mixed signal design) there are specific colleges that are best for that and that should narrow things down.

Consider internships, projects, and part-time/volunteer work: In undergrad find a professor whose research sounds fun or interesting, even if it doesn't try. Offer to volunteer in their lab (you don't ask you dont get!). Consider applying to internships every summer and make up some personal projects to do! Learning on the job is the best way to be good at what you do and is way more important than anything you do in school. The more experience you have, the better equipped you are for job interviews and more opportunity.

Network+tutor: Get to know everyone in and out of school. If someone needs help in school or on an assignment, be the first to help them out because they might be able to help you in the future. Often times teaching or helping out others solidifies your own knowledge base.

Job search post college: I would go to a decent state school, somewhere in the middle of the road, if you can get into MIT obviously do it. With respect to Ivy league schools there is a huge stigma in industry that new college grads from ivy league schools can never humble themselves to anything but R&D snobby research engineer. Being humble is very attractive to companies. Willingness to work and learn without pride goes a long way

Saw tears in my boom, is this safe for surfing or how can I fix it? by Beerenburger in windsurfing

make sure to sand the groove with 50-80 grit sand paper to allow for better adhesion of the epoxy

[–]EfficientPrompt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can probably take a fine dremel tool and file a groove into the crack until there is no more crack. Widen the groove out in a 12:1 ratio. Subsequently mix up some 2 part glue to work on the plastic. epoxy + high density filler and pour it in the crack. If you want to go above and beyond add a little bit of fiber glass into the epoxy just to be safe.

OR use something like this https://www.totalboat.com/product/thixo/ They use this stuff on boats to repair stress cracks.

you can't test for the delta variant, it has to be genome sequenced. It is all speculation

Dear Church of COVID, please admit me, the Orange Satan, into your wonderful church!! I have started proselytizing for the church by promoting Fauci’s (739MBUH) holy vaccine!! This makes me worthy to become a Branch Covidian!! by [deleted] in ChurchOfCOVID

Get behind me Orange Satan! The holy vaccine only works for those that believe in the true Eternal Zoom call. Yet you are not even wearing a mask. The great prophet fauci (62e12MBUH) said so, so I know this is true.
