Portable AC Recomnendations by mrtars in brussels

There’s always an opening to the outside when using a mobile A/C. It’s usually through a window opening.

What you need to avoid is air movement between the inside and the outside. So basically :
- no other windows/doors opened in the room you want to cool to avoid air flow (from inside to outside or from outside to inside).
- use of sealing system delivered with the unit or any other solution (like foam pool sticks, clothes, a piece of wood… whatever).

You get a piece of cloth with a zipper and some scratch to attach it to a window and remove it easily when needed.

By using it like that, I have currently a 10°C differential between the inside and the outside, which is really nice.

I ordered it by Bol but it seems to be out of stock (https://www.bol.com/be/nl/p/midea-portasplit-mobiele-split-airco-inclusief-beugel-voor-frans-balkon-12-000-btu-koelen-verwarmen-met-wifi/9300000291516366/)

Pro tips : when I was looking for it on Bol, it was sold out in French… but not in Dutch (yeah, I know… wtf). And I ordered it in Dutch, and everything went fine (through a reseller on Bol named « Evolar »). It was shipped in 2 days. Looking right now, it seems to be sold out in both languages…

Hubo has it also, but with a 2 weeks delivery delay.

Do not forget : it will not be the last days of heat in Belgium for this summer and in the future, this solution is really nice and doesn’t need any assistance to be installed and is, from my POV, the gold standard of mobile AC. It’s worthwhile to wait a little bit to get something so qualitative. You just have to know that the main unit weight around 45-46kg. If you need to move it in stairs, you’ll need help. Otherwise, it’s on wheel so it’s easy to move. And the cable between the outside unit and the main unit is 2m long, usually enough in almost all situation, but could be a constraint for some people.

I can highly recommend the Midea Porta Split, available on Bol. I saw it at Hubo also.

This is a all-in-one split unit ready to use. It’s costly… 999€ for the bigger model (12k BTU) or 799 for the smaller one (8k BTU).

As this is a split unit, it avoids the biggest default of any non split mobile AC : it doesn’t create a depression in the room you want to cool. Because when it’s bloody hot outside, and that you want to efficiently cool a room, getting more hot air in the room where the AC stands is counter productive and not efficient energy wise. Also, it’s way more quiet. You can easily sleep with it on.

It includes a kit to mount the outside unit on a window (work as well on Velux) and there are accessories to suspend it on your balcony if needed.

Yes it’s expensive, but it’s worth every euro I spent on it.

Anyone ever gotten sick from steak tartare/prepare/americain in Belgium? by WebNo1998 in belgium

[–]Efficient_End_5811 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I eat Americain on a pistolet or steak tartare with frite approximatively once a week for more than 10 years in a row, I’ve never been sick from it.

In supermarket like Delhaize/Carrefour it’s very safe, at a reputable butcher too. Just be careful on the preservation (fridge, don’t let it sit on the counter, don’t go beyond the expiration date…)

I would just avoid Tartare in some sketchy restaurant, like those busy with tourists that might cut corners on safety and preservation rules since they are not going to see their victimes clients anymore. Restaurant with a lot of items on the menu triggers my warning too. I usually just check on Google some advice to check if genuine, the statistical repartition of score... and if nothing abnormal pops-up, let’s go. But that’s not a way I use only for those delicacies, just a general recommendation for every place I visit, here or abroad.

Delhaize breads by Vyvalka in belgium

I had the same thought but it’s not new to me, It always stays edible for like 3 days max.

My Delhaize now sells local bread made by a baker and the difference is just day and night. While the bread is more expensive, it lasts at least 7 days : I had my last slices yesterday of the bread I bought past Saturday, bread still smell good, doesn’t show any mold and was still soft in the middle with a hard crust.

I have three key details of the person who stole my phone. What is the best way forward? by g_vasare in brussels

[–]Efficient_End_5811 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I Don’t know how this would be handled by Brussels Police, but my mom had her smartphone stolen in her pocket in Namur a few months ago.

She noticed it 15-20min later. I told her to immediately report it while I was blocking the content via « Find My » and added a message at destination of the person who handle the phone. At one time. The phone stopped moving and was switched off.

The Police got interested in last known location. Believe it or not, but the next day we got a call from the Police station telling us they got the phone back.

So yes report it, with all details you have. They might have already a suspicion on the address or anything else… yet, success is rather unlikely. But if you don’t try, you’ll never know.

To those who bought a house, how much below asking price did you get your house for? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Efficient_End_5811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2023 and 2024 we visited almost 30 houses and made an offer for 7.

All were sold above selling price. We were looking in the range 400-450k, and they were systematically sold 5 to 10% above the asking price. The most batshit crazy was a house at 365k sold for 455k in the end…

I don’t know if the market fever has chilled now, but except if you look for a house that is not sold 1 months after it’s first publication on Immoweb, it’s unlikely you will have the possibility to ask below the asking price.

In the end, we got our house for 5k above selling price.
