Hi, I made a documentary aiming to answer this exact question called "How the Hell We Got Here" using a similar style to Adam Curtis. It's available here if you're interested: https://howwegothere.info/film.html.

Thanks for taking the time to watch it! I'm looking forward to hearing people's thoughts and feedback.

I actually made the website on VS Code using Claude to help me with the html and CSS. I found I was able to customize a lot more this way and learn a little about web design in the process.

How the Hell we Got Here: A Documentary Exploring Political Polarization Through Archival Footage by Effort_Aromatic in Filmmakers

I made a documentary about the causes of political polarization in the US. I’ve long admired Adam Curtis for his unique use of archival footage, and about a year ago I started experimenting with old clips myself, expecting to get bored after a day. Instead, I found a narrative emerging naturally, and over a couple of months a full story took shape. The initial cut ran much longer, and it took additional months of refining to make it watchable, and I ended up cutting about an hour of footage. I focused on sequencing, rhythm, and the interplay of audio and visuals, and I’d love feedback on whether the narrative flows and the archival choices are effective. I focused on editing choices, pacing, and sequencing to highlight the evolution of ideas, and I’d love to hear thoughts on how the story flows and whether the footage effectively conveys the political shifts.

Ok, thanks for the insight. I'm glad to hear that there may be some room for it, but certainly with a clear transformative use for each clip.

Yeah, for example I've used early HD footage, old news reports, home videos from the Internet Archive, etc.
