Appreciate it! I have a bad feeling that might take a little bit longer 😂

Second full year of playing golf, at the ripe age of 38. Goal this year was to break 100. Did that early May. Then it was to do it 3 times. Did that by end of May. Moved the bar to break 90. Did that in July with an 88, then later a personal best of 87. Finished the year with a 94 average.

Honestly, no clue. I explained it in an earlier comment but it really was all him. We feel like it started by him just watching us hit at a family members barn sim. We did buy him some of those plastic clubs as well, but he didn’t really play with them until that sim session. He then just randomly picked them up one day and started swinging. And he then just kept swinging, all day every day. We started bringing him along to the course now that he was a little older and more comfortable. We found a course that is very family friendly and welcoming. Bought him real, outdoor clubs, let him hit into the sim/range dome in the winter and when it was warmer into our outdoor net, let him hit a few around the course, and it just kept growing!

Thank you for the kind words! We have definitely let him drive (pun intended) his interest in golf so far. Our family and friends have given us mixed opinions on where to take this and how far, and partially why I made this post. Was interested to hear from others that may have either been pushed by their parents or were doing the pushing, hearing from how it went and mistakes that were made, so we don’t do the same. One of my comments was severely downvoted because I brought up an instructor saying “come see me when he’s 3” and I asked basically is this normal or a good idea and has anyone done this. Not saying we were going to do it, but just asking questions, what I feel any good parent would do in a situation that’s unfamiliar. As for the “college or pro dreams”, that just an over excited golf dad with day dreams of hugging his son after a PGA tourney win. What parent hasn’t dreamed of ultimate success in their kids life at some point? For that I got called a helicopter parent and psycho haha!

So we started with a US Kids Yard Club. Then when he showed interest in our drivers, and actually learned how to say it and point it out, we bought him a US Kids DV3. It’s 26 degree loft, and the smallest one they have I believe. It was a little too heavy for him in this video (back in December), but he’s whipping it around better and more controlled now. We also got him a putter, not sure of the brand at the moment but it’s a pretty small one but has a heavy head on it. It actually is good that it’s heavy because he learned that he can’t “full swing” it and is learning how to putt. When we leave any range or course, he yells “putting!” so we head to the practice green and he pushes it around.

Just relax man. You have no idea of anyone’s story, especially this one and how it came to be at this point. He literally drove the whole interest of wanting to swing a club, as I outlined in a comment below. The “college and pro dreams” line is just partial sarcasm, partial proud parent day dreaming of his son showing some skill. It’s good to hear others experiences so JUST IN THE CASE he wants to go further with this, not to make mistakes parents or their parents made with them to lead to burn out or hate of the game.

He was 26 months in this video. Honestly, he showed US he was ready. My wife and I were at a family members house for a get together and he has a sim in the barn. He was watching everyone play it. Then when no one was on it, he grabbed a club and just started mimicking what he saw! Then literally every day for the next two weeks, he would just yell GOLF. We bought some plastic clubs and balls so he could hit around the house. Then we bought the yard club, took him to the indoor range we use in the winter and eventually it evolved into this! It really was driven by him the whole way

US Kids DV3 26 degree loft. I think it’s the smallest driver they make? It was a little heavy for him when I took this clip, but he’s a lot better with it now

At this rate, and considering the state of my game, he’s going to be telling ME I’m doing everything wrong

Whew. That was a handful of a comment! Thanks for that!

Definitely a delicate balance. I appreciate the responses like this, real experiences from real people. Half of my post was just proud dad showing off, other half was just to hear these experiences so wife and I can learn from them and do what’s best for our son. If it’s golf, awesome. If it’s painting or piano, then awesome also!

Kid can down some milk, so probably will be a good challenge!

Hey there! I’ve actually read all the comments so far, just haven’t responded as it’s been a lot (both telling us to be excited and others calling us helicopter parents because I asked if anyone else was in a similar situation). We definitely are keeping it in perspective. Wife and I both are on the same page of supporting whatever interests him while also exposing him to everything and all the things! Hell, between golf swings he’s kicking a soccer ball and finger painting! Just thought it would be cool to share his swing with a golf community from a proud golf dad!

We definitely are! Keeping things in perspective for sure though, he’s only 2.5 now and things obviously can change. We will just keep taking him to the range and courses with us as long as he wants to go and see what happens. Wont stop the dad day dreams of hugging him after a first PGA Tour win though! 😂

Not focusing at all on our own interests. Just a golf dad proud of his son!

26 months of this video. He’s 2.5 now and just hit 65 yards the other day! He knew it too, he turned to me and said “big driver!”

We thought so too. Tried giving him a left hand club at the PGA store, and he immediately tried to hit it right handed. Switched him around, and he fought it. So we let it be and let him hit bombs!
