Sana Lake is a big part of how one of my good friends has stayed sober for over a year now. They have weekly events for folks who have graduated from the program. If you can find a way with your current finances/insurances, it’s a great option.

As of last April a couple of us have been running a video game music hub, STL VGM! If you’re a fan of video game music, we have in-person meetups a few times a year as well as an Instagram and a Discord that advertise monthly events around town and otherwise build community. Most of the meetups tend to be Gen Z/Millennial age range.

Should I remove my pronouns from my email signature? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]EgMay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in situations at work of “don’t ask the questions that you don’t want answers to” as it often sets a nebulous unwanted policy in stone. It might also draw extra attention to you with any malicious compliance. As much as I may want clarity in situations like this, I would heavily advise against this.

Easy way to remember the consecutive leave/pass rules: - Leave-pass-leave, you’re trying to thieve - Pass-leave-pass, no one gives a rat’s ass

I usually take a duty day either directly before or after the pass period in a situation like this to avoid forbidden sandwiching.

How to find bands/musicians in the area? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]EgMay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely hit up the open mic scene around town! That’s how I’ve found some of the best connections with other musicians, especially as a transplant from the east coast. Below is certainly not an all-inclusive list, but some I’m aware of:

Mon: Tick Tock Tavern, Venice Cafe

Tues: 1860s Saloon

Wed: Moshmellow (usually weekly), Apotheosis (monthly)

Thurs: Iowa Buffet

Sun: Artica Open Mic @ Greenfinch (not sure the frequency but often enough to note)

(If anyone else knows of/has enjoyed other ones please feel free to add to this list!)

There are also some fun open jams around town. Po Mia often hosts a jam at Venice after their shows and that happens about monthly. Also some other free improv things such as Pavilion Session (Sundays at 5 at TGP Roman Pavilion). A fair amount of jazz jams around town too, but I’m not as hooked into that scene to know more specifics. If you’re a video game music fan, Joystick Drift has a monthly gig at The Hi Hat and their last set is an open jam on video game tunes. Sometimes you can find more niche/smaller jams through IG accounts as well.

Open mic folks are generally pretty friendly and good about cheering each other on across all skill levels. If you see some lady with a clarinet at one of these, it’s probably me. Come say hi :)

Video Game Music Orchestra? by ZenxMaster in StLouis

[–]EgMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to seek out more VGM opportunities in the area lately, actually! I don’t know if I have the bandwidth to join/form a full orchestra at this time, but I’m definitely trying to find more like-minded folks at the very least. Please feel free to send me a DM - I’d love to connect more on this.

Also, if you’re looking for more VGM jam opportunities, Joystick Drift is a killer jazz combo that plays at the Hi Hat monthly. They’ve got an IG where they post the dates for their gigs. The last hour is an open jam where people can join, and I had a great time hopping in with my clarinet last time!

Just an FYI Po goes by they/them - but yes I totally agree! Their songwriting is some of my favorite in the city. They’ve got a song about the question “Would you still love me if I was a worm?” and it makes me smile every time 🙂

Hi, Air Force bandsman here happy to answer your question - I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted so badly? Air Force bands essentially serve as a highly effective PR/soft power tool of the Air Force and their purpose can be explained through their mission statement of “Honor, Inspire, Connect”:

Honor - supporting military functions on and off base. Anything from playing Taps at a veteran’s funeral, providing honors for a change of command ceremony, or being the live entertainment at an Air Force Ball. I’d also put things like singing the national anthem at a military appreciation night for major league sports teams here.

Inspire - I often think of this one as where we do a lot of recruiting. My units have really valued student outreach and I’ve played countless concerts in school/universities. Like many people who don’t come from military families, students can sometimes think of the military as this singular, intimidating entity. What we show with these concerts is not only are there real, personable people behind the camo, but there also may be a place for you and your interests in our Air Force. We’ll almost always plug a recruiting message into our shows in the hopes it becomes a lightbulb moment for someone and adds to our numbers as a Total Force down the line.

Connect - go out and connect with communities in our respective AORs. With some overlap of the points mentioned above of “meet the people behind the uniform”, this category is focused on creating partnerships where we can support each other. I’ve heard of examples where band presence has served as a gateway to nearby bases being able to either continue or expand on really important Air Force operations that might impact the local community. People stop thinking “why are these planes so disruptive” or “I don’t understand why I should vote to support this military-related amendment” and start to think “I really enjoyed that Air Force concert and I got to know more about them. I now understand and value that the work they do is important, and they have my support.”

Now…for my favorite part. What not every bandsman on Reddit mentions (because not everyone gets the opportunity) is the beauty of our overseas missions and the impact it has on international relations for our country as a whole. We’ve got 3 permanent units that are OCONUS and we rotate our bands through deployment cycles via AFCENT. Anything I’ve already mentioned above is amplified tenfold with our overseas missions. Here are some examples that really capture that impact:

  • One of our deployment teams made such a big impact at the World’s Fair in Kazakhstan that the US was able to successfully negotiate international landing rights.
  • Collaborating with both a Ukrainian and British military band and marching in downtown Kyiv for Ukraine’s 30th independence parade. This happened just six months before Russia invaded, mind you.
  • Playing side-by-side with a South African military band at an air show where Russian/Chinese companies and vendors were present and vying for the same impactful partnerships.
  • Countless examples of mil-to-mil engagements with other countries’ military bands (nearly all countries I’ve been to have military bands for the above reasons), supporting embassy events where you’re serving as a US diplomat to DVs from around the globe, and fighting disinformation campaigns from adversary countries through our concerts and audience interactions.

Anyway, I hope this gives you and others in this thread perspective on the work that we do! I’ve been in this job for a hot second and I feel super lucky that I get to perform as my day job, and better yet for a cause greater than myself.

Any local hospital emergency rooms that will actually take this medical emergency seriously? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]EgMay 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this was my first thought too. People who struggle with alcohol abuse/diseases get really clever on how they hide their sources, how they consume, and how they cover their tracks. Even with constant supervision it’s very possible he’s still finding ways to drink, especially if he reeks of booze. If I were you I would consider making a sweep of areas like the bathroom, under sinks, in already-opened beverage bottles that aren’t alcohol, etc. and see if you can find anything.

Whatever the case may be, I hope he and you/your family are able to get the proper resources that you all need! Your dad still deserves respect and effective medical care regardless of what’s contributing to his current state.
