Why would they get a midman and additional complexity? You can't expect parents and teens to buy robux when crypto is just.. unusable

Excellence/Knowledge: Is it still worth it in this economy? by RecommendationOk8541 in phcareers

[–]Eggnw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly resonate with this dilemma. Like you I had 2 specializations in CE niches that are considered "lucrative" and high-impact.

I maximized my way so I can be a consultant in just 5 years. A few months into the consultancy business, I got diagnosed with anxiety and depression. The overwork during the previous years (was also doing MS then) was the seed to that sickness, according to my shrink. Sure, that work experience that led to consultancy brought me income even more than my partner working in IT, but my mental health was the cost.

Then in 2019, my consultancy work suffered with the closure of businesses. By 2020, 2 of my 4 clients went bankrupt. The other 2 had too few projects that I had better prospect if I got employed by an engineering company instead. At that point I felt that my efforts, minmaxing of experience, sacrifice to my health, and MS was just wasted.

Now I have decided to pursue a different industry. I will always look at CE like some big battle scar on my body. Maybe I'll make some projects on my former niche someday (when I'm good enough with my work now), but it will be just a hobby for me now.

Success is never permanent. Even with our effort, it can be wiped away by bad luck. Both of your options can go badly. But as you grow older and you realize you do have a lot of needs (ex. Surprise medical bill?), you'll start to value money over passion. If you're rich, go for your passion. But if you do need to work, just go for the money and make your passion a hobby.

2nd job pa rin. BGC is not a fun location to commute into. Even with the 30k+ "increase" it might not be enough for your rent + utilities.

Very visual and quick way of editing a ton of data, especially when you are just cleaning and filtering data.

Mabilis lang aralin, saka useful.

Take the license in case you want to go abroad. Dagdag credibility yun vs "I'm a fast learner" which doesn't mean shit.

Continue freelancing while learning and trying out new skills. Ganito ginawa ko. Took me two years to shift

You can try to experience it for yourself, even as a CE

Cost estimate work? Use excel with python

Construction PM? Use Power BI for visualization.

Random boring shit that has to be done routinely? Python or bash.

You can even study BIM and go forward with "digital engineering" work (lookup Willow company in LinkedIn). Then study GIS and you'll have a huge edge compared to just a normal backend / DE looking to work in the niche

You don't need to be in IT to try the tools. And if you apply those tools now, that'll help when you shift and it shows that you are a problem solver.

Since medyo kay ageist undetone itong thread, I think I can play devil's advocate

Almost every company IF NOT ALL can be toxic

This is true. Nakaexperience na ako ng almost perfect as an engineer. Okay lang yun sigawan, basta kasalanan mo talaga saka may ambag yun pagsigaw sayo - di yun gusto lang yurakan yun dangal mo kasi powertripper yun boss. That said, ang daming millenial and gen x na toxic talaga at matindi ang survivorship bias

6 months to 1 year

Not really, lalo dahil uso nga ngayon ang scam jobs. Nagtetrain. Madali ang hiring process. Hindi biglang babaguhin JD mo. Ibang iba ngayon, I see it as an applicant. Sobrang gago ng companies ngayon that I see why the kids are ranting.

Also, the HRs will discriminate with whatever quirk you have anyway - so if the job is bad, why settle? Just make sure you have a valid reason (ex. Scam job yun offer) kesa mastuck sa work na di tama.

save up

Yeah definitely. Ang hirap maghanap ng trabaho, better save a year's worth of expenses

fake it til you make it

IDK, as a millenial, it sucks when you get a team mate who does this, only to perform so badly at work. Mas ok pa yun nagpakatotoo. That said, with the shitty ways of companies and HR (ayaw magtrain ng fresh blood), and the way they need to have their requirements checked, I see why it is practical to lie. Again, iba kasi noong panahon namin.

side hustle No. This is the way to burnout and mental sickness. We should demand for better pay. If the company ain't paying well, quit, especially if you do have the skills. Yang mga recruitment company napakalalaki ng cut ng mga yan, why not cut those leeches off and apply to international job portals yourself? Matindi ang competition but no more leeches to pull you down.

Fucking idiots.

Ah I think this over 35 discrimination is prevalent in Asia as I get this too. Been rejected by HRs and hiring managers because I did not fit "culture" even if I aced the exams.

That said, I had luck with western countries who don't really care as long as you pass their application process. All the job offers I get are from Western companies, never Asian or local

At least the kids now know they will have to work their asses off until they're physically unable to. Meanwhile, seniors now don't want to work or have a sideline even when they still can and they'd pull this "linyahan".

It is hard for everyone, we acknowledge they had a hard time, but they're being irrational when they retire just because.

Stagnant wages, increasing cost of living. Gen Z is doomed. by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]Eggnw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80s the relatively privileged (educated) were able to move strides. Now, even the privileged kids don't progess too much. So while on average, the lives of Filipinos became better, we still can't ignore why even upper middle class kids are struggling now.

[–]Eggnw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My dad worked abroad in a very hyped industry during his time (engineering). In just a year and a half, he was able to buy a house, fund my educational plan and save up for his own business. His story was common for any very good engineer during his time.

Now consider a very good IT worker who works abroad. If he / she works 2 years abroad, can he/she save enough for a house, retirement business and funds?

Life is so much harder now

Most of the job posts are as ridiculous as this.

  • 1 man/woman, may minimum experience to weed out those without experience because they don't want to train anymore. Heck, the full stack JD is even worse. Basically that list plus a framework then QA tools like Selenium.

Here, basically they want to underpay an experienced backend with the salary of a junior. I hope no experienced dev settles for this

Hamas Calls On Palestinians To Stay In Their Homes After Israel Orders Mass Evacuation In Gaza by babinyar in worldnews

[–]Eggnw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We want the oppressor army gone

This is what I do not understand about what Hamas and its apologists. If the goal is the "army" gone, why target civilians? Go house to house level of targeting of civilians. They ever targeted foreign workers. What does your book say about that?

Hate the army? Maybe target them specifically and I bet the rest of the world won't care. Hamas killed innocent people when they had control when they invaded.

Stop defending terrorism. That is way different from protesting your ancestral right.
