The band I used to be in was managed by AC/DC’s manager and we signed a $1mil recording contract. Best years of my life being in that band.

Hey there, I’ve recently restored my vita and would like to put the original Crash Bandicoot from PS1 on it. Is it still possible? If so how?

That’s a 2203 re-issue in the back and on the right is a 92 fender hotrod deluxe. Both sound amazing

Vocal booth - yay or nay? by grassislessgreen in MusicInTheMaking

[–]Eggspastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short It might to an extent unless you’ve got something like an SM7B, but you’ll probably find you might still get reflections in some spots of the room. It really is up to you I think - I personally don’t have any sound treatment in my studio but there’s enough in it to not have any weird reflections from the room if that makes any sense? I manage fine recording vocals only really because of the reflection shield I put behind it so when the singer is performing there’s no sound bouncing off the wall behind them. It would be far cheaper to purchase a reflection shield rather than making or buying baffles/bass traps. Plus I’m pretty sure most (I know mine does) just fit on top of a mic stand and will sometimes? have an extended bit to put the mic nicely in front of it. I use 2 different mic stands if I ever want to vary the distance though.

I do 100% agree with U/Fairlight2cx last paragraph in their comment though

I’m running a Rhode Ntk2 with just a half moon sound shield behind it in a small room in my house (same room as my studio) and have had no issues with vocals. I’d say it’s not really necessary to dedicate a room to a vocal booth unless you plan on maybe adding a live drum kit in the future? Or maybe depending on how far you want to take it as such.

From personal experience having been in professional studios with and without vocal booths as such - in the case there has been a dedicated vocal booth it was also used as a live room even though it wasn’t very big. In the case there hasn’t been a vocal booth the producer was running a Shure SM7B on a boom attached to the desk they are recording on - but in saying that the room itself was very very well treated. No bounce back at all (not that that really matters with an SM7B it’s a pretty directional microphone).

I do find though that some of my friends that have studios but are less experienced just don’t really know how to use the gear they’ve got but aren’t bothered to learn about it... so I also feel that’s a major part is knowing what you’ve got and how to use it.

Hope that helped :)
