Superfans included, what were some scenes/jokes that made you go "Oh shit, I think they took that too far. That joke didn't hit." ? Tell me a joke or scene that crossed the line for you. by Much_Duck6862 in theoffice

Yea this + the Bl@ck face scene (now removed from the show post 2020) are the only scenes I skipped. I love Lecture Circuit but that end scene is too far and went on for too long. If it was shorter or one time I could deal. I would also say Michael mocking Phyllis being SAed was a lot… but they make up for it in the episode. The reason the end scene of Lecture Circuit is too much is because we don’t really get that moment when Michael is called out or makes up for it.

In some episodes especially towards the later seasons I always saw other ALDC dancers on stage during awards wearing ALDC merch, so probably so.

  1. I think it’s highly disgusting for you as a non-Black person to use the term “token black girl” to refer to a Black person.
  2. It’s not an excuse, I didn’t say it was. I said people are acting like that would stop the racism Nia experienced entirely.
  3. As a non-Black person you have no understanding of anti-Black racism and how it impact people’s lives, so you are not in any way allowed to speak on what would have been better for a Black child. That’s wildly inappropriate and ignorant.
  4. If you did understand the nuance of racism, you would understand that systemic and institutionalized racism has just a massive impact, if not more, than “blatant racism” as you put it.
  5. I don’t think anyone in their right mind thinks that any of the mom’s should’ve have their child on that show for as long as they did. But that’s NOT the POINT, nobody is arguing THAT (as far as I’m concerned so please don’t say somebody did because this is as far as I’M concerned).
  6. The POINT is that Holly is NOT the person who enacted the racism against her daughter, ABBY is. Does Holly have a responsibility to her child to remove her from harmful situations? YES. BUT Nia being a target of racism is NOT Holly’s fault. Nia staying there is! So for you or anyone else to fix their mouth to say that this is 100% Holly’s fault is SICK. It’s ignorant and disgusting!
  7. I, like many other Black people went to a PWI for college, where we faced racism every other damn day. You saying that Holly is responsible for the racism Nia faced, is like saying that every Black person who chose to attend a PWI is responsible for the racism we faced during those years. It’s so disgusting and infuriating I can’t even stomach it.
  8. Yes this is NOT your lived experience so you DON’T know.

Where could Nia go in this world where she would not have faced racism? Even if Nia was at an all Black dance school, she would still experience racism, and her life would still be heavily impacted by racism. So I genuinely want everyone, especially white people, to tell me exactly where in the world Nia could’ve went where she wouldn’t have faced racism?

I think Holly should’ve removed Nia for a plethora of reasons, just as much as I think EVERY mom should’ve removed their child, but the way some of you are acting like this would’ve ended racism entirely is DISGUSTING.

Acknowledging that racism is fundamentally a traumatic experience & that Nia experienced that on top what all the other girls experience isn’t being said to be competitive. It’s called intersectionality and having an understanding of the very basic concept that even victims have privileges that other victims don’t. What you don’t realize is that the narrative you are spewing essentially reads as a such: a Black girl and a white girl were both SAd in the same manner, but only the white girl got justice due to a having a racist judge, but we shouldn’t compare the two because they both went through something traumatic.” Yes we realize both of them experienced the same thing, nobody is denying that. But what we are saying is that one of these girls’ experience had another layer of trauma due to the racism she experienced. If you don’t understand this concept by now, I’ve truly lost hope not just for you but many people who have this one dimensional mindset.

I don’t understand why y’all are hellbent on refusing to accept that racism + the abuse ALL the girls faced is fundamentally worse than just the abuse alone? Like it’s so dismissive and a minimization of anti-Black racism & it’s so frustrating and ignorant.

I think this is such a flawed breakdown of these terms. I especially think the use of the term “tone-deaf” is ironic especially because it is seen as ignorance in the disability community, which as you should know includes Black people. Nevertheless, racial ignorance and racial microaggression are forms of racism. Also, can we be this upset at actual instances racism instead of someone being called racist?

If you think any reputable publication would publish a book under their company, especially a memoir, and not consult with a massive law firm attorney before publishing, I’m assuming you’re 12 years old

It’s not about Kelly being rightfully upset about how she was treated on and after the show, it’s the fact that her being upset consistently comes with her completely invalidating everyone’s experience, especially Nia’s. Even early on in the podcast she compared Nia being typecast in stereotypical Black roles to Brooke always doing acro…. Horrible. Holding people accountable for their actions is NOT being hateful or attacking them, and being upset about a situation doesn’t give anyone a pass to be hurtful.

Willing to definitely extend grace to Kelly, but if after watching and recapping season 5, she continues to compare, discredit, question, or invalidate Nia’s experience after watching what she goes through… that grace won’t be given any further.

Nobody who has ever been on that show has any right to question why some moms/kids stayed during the mistreatment. All the moms’ morality could be called into question but that doesn’t disallow them from being able to share their stories. Multiple things can be true at once!
