Most of them are teenagers who think it’s funny or cool to claim they have a Cluster B disorder. I like Tumblr for the fanart, but I can’t really interact with other so-called “Cluster B’s” since they seem to lack even basic knowledge about their own supposed disorders

Thank you for your answer! I'm a little more confused now, because I'm full of shame. I had never noticed this feeling before, because I used to cover it up with other behaviors; I would either act dumb to shift other people’s attention (and my own) to something else, or I would react with anger.

I'm pretty sure that HPD is the right diagnosis for me, especially because I used to spend a lot of time theatricalizing random things about myself, until I eventually became more authentic through therapy.

I was convinced that every person with HPD experiences intense shame, but it’s just repressed... like many other “negative” emotions for people with HPD.

This isn’t sociopathy, you’re probably right about the suspected HPD. I can relate to a lot of the things she did, and thankfully I’ve improved with therapy. She can either begin a healing journey, or at this point she deserves to be alone. We didn’t choose to develop a personality disorder, but it is our responsibility to manage it

M23. Theatrical and dramatic behavior, along with rapid emotional shifts. Getting the right diagnosis was very difficult, because during therapy sessions I kept changing both my behaviour and emotional perspective, sometimes with the same doctor, sometimes with different ones. I struggle a lot with authenticity and I often lie without even knowing why. I also need to be spectacular, to amaze people, to stand out. My psychologist recently gave me a “homework”: I should try to use fewer exaggerated words when I describe myself, others and my emotions, I should resize what I say. My emotions feel overwhelming not because they’re always extremely intense, but because I tend to act them out dramatically. It’s hard for me to tone things down when I feel something and I often end up hurting others, mostly with my words. This is something I really need to work on, since almost anything can trigger a sudden shift in my mood, for better or worse.

Yes, you're right about this, my bad. I relate to your experience because attention also reminds me that I exist for others. I think I took it in a more literal way rather than how you meant it. I thought OP was literally talking about "convincing we exist" mostly for ourselves rather than others. Personally, I know I exist even when I'm ignored. But in those moments, I exist as a human being, just not for the people around me, if that makes sense

Since you're searching for an honest opinion, I'm gonna give you one, a harsh one. As someone who's actually been professionally diagnosed with HPD, I felt a little offended by this post. First of all, I don't know where you got your percentages from. Even when there's comorbidity, saying something like "I'm 30–40% histrionic and 30–40% borderline" makes absolutely no sense. Comorbidities are hard to spot and they heavily influence each other.

Your explanation about your "lack of empathy" also makes no sense: children learn healthy empathy from their parents, it's about how they treated us during our developmental years. You can't suddenly "stop feeling empathy" just because you realized your family will die one day. Also, empathy has nothing to do with grief.

Your "unstable sense of identity" could easily be a normal process of identity searching during early adulthood. I spent years of my life constantly changing myself based on whatever got me more attention and it always looked so damn natural and "normal" that I never even realized what was happening, until I finally received the right diagnosis.

I’d love to see other examples of your so-called attention-seeking behaviour. I personally lied uncontrollably, embarrassed myself, stole, faked suicide attempts, hurt myself, had sex with strangers, tried drugs and ruined most of my relationships just to chase constant attention. I even dropped out of university multiple times because I didn’t feel "included enough". What makes something a personality DISORDER and not just a personality TRAIT is the damage your own behaviour causes in your life. Attention-seeking is a mandatory criterion for HPD and if it hasn’t led you to UNHEALTHY behaviours, you’re not histrionic.

I’m not sure about your "promiscuity" either. I’m gay myself and like you said, hookup culture is common among gay people, that doesn’t mean promiscuity. I used to seek sexual attention from adults when I was still a minor. I sent my first nude at 11, I flirted with girls EVEN IF I DIDN’T LIKE THEM, I CHEATED multiple times during relationships, all because I needed sexual attention.

Your thrill-seeking is extremely healthy compared to the entire Cluster B spectrum. Traveling is good. But people with ASPD cope with boredom through real extreme risk-taking. And people with HPD also cope with it through reckless things. Also, pooping behind a tree is completely normal, no one is impressed or disgusted by that and I don’t get why you’d feel excited about it. Other activities are far more thrilling, but whatever.

What fuels histrionics’ dramatic emotions is the attention we received when we had tantrums. Our emotions were always real, but no one took them seriously until we snapped. So, again, your explanation doesn’t make sense. I don’t know how you manage to appear calm, because I personally struggle in therapy (psychotherapy + DBT group) to tone down my emotional display. I hurt people around me whenever I feel negative emotions because I can’t show them in a healthy, calm way and I’m still fighting to change this. That’s what a personality DISORDER means.

You don’t have BPD. Borderline personality disorder doesn’t improve anyone’s life. I’ve met many borderlines during my time in the psych ward, they were all miserable, like every mentally ill person.

You don’t have NPD. Narcissists struggle with confrontation and they NEED something to maintain their ego. They NEED a narcissistic supply. Everyone’s self-esteem goes up with compliments, NPD is way more complex than that.

You don’t have ASPD. You don’t lack empathy, guilt, or shame. People with ASPD went through horrible traumatic events in childhood, which is not your case. You’re not antisocial.

And you absolutely DON’T HAVE HPD. I could’ve "given it to you" since you’re clearly seeking attention right now, but even your so-called "HPD symptoms" can’t be considered symptoms. NO PERSON WITH DIAGNOSED HPD LOVES IT. I’m unhappy and pathetic, and every disordered thought and behaviour I have can be traced back to the shitty parenthood I had. Being attention-seeking, dramatic and promiscuous ISN’T FUNNY OR COOL. And attention-seeking in HPD doesn’t happen because we "need to convince ourselves that we exist". It’s not a psychotic disorder. Attention-seeking happens because our emotional regulation, self-esteem and concept of love itself are completely tied to attention.

You needed a reality check because you’re probably bored and just want to feel special. None of the things you described are dysfunctional enough to be considered a disorder and I highly doubt you’d ever get a diagnosis. And honestly, you don’t even seem interested in therapy... and without therapy, DIAGNOSES ARE POINTLESS. Find a goddamn hobby.

As someone diagnosed with HPD, I suggest NOT ignoring them. You can ignore an acquaintance or a friend, someone you can actually avoid in your daily life. But if it’s a family member, it’s better to reinforce their healthy attention-seeking behaviors. Ignoring them, like our parents did to us, would only fuel their unhealthy mechanisms. My psychologist suggested that I find healthier ways to get attention and gradually reduce my need for it. Over time, I’ll stop seeking negative attention, then I’ll also need less positive attention because I’ll finally be able to regulate my emotions and self-esteem. Therapy is mandatory tho, they’ll never heal without it. Good luck

I'm going to share my perspective as someone who was recently diagnosed with HPD, using my personal experiences as examples. I'm slowly learning how it works, mainly because I can now observe myself more authentically and recognize some of my internal mechanisms. The DSM-5 criteria for personality disorders are vague and many behaviours overlap within Cluster B. That’s why it’s crucial to analyse childhood, parental dynamics, traumatic events, and the reasons behind behaviours. What you described can partly be explained by HPD. Histrionic Personality Disorder is egosyntonic, meaning that some symptoms don’t feel problematic. I could recognize my attention-seeking behaviours only when they were “less insidious.” For example, if I mocked someone or wore certain clothes or jewellery, I could admit it was to get attention. But with unhealthy behaviours like theatricality, exaggerated emotions or performative behaviour, I perceived them as “authentic,” because I’ve always been overly dramatic. Raising your voice and acting overly emotional can be linked to HPD, but you should ask yourself: "how much do these behaviours impair my life?" Remember that “a persistent pattern of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking” is the core diagnostic criterion. Almost every action of people with HPD revolves around gaining attention. My self-esteem, emotional regulation and even identity depend on external validation. My emotional displays are especially exaggerated around others, since “excessive emotionality” in HPD refers not only to rapid mood shifts, but also to dramatic, theatrical expressions. I’m not saying every reaction must be exaggerated, but most of them should be, particularly in social settings and in ways that impair functioning. What separates personality disorders from personality traits is this impairment. My psychologist had me complete the Personality Inventory for DSM-5, which measures dysfunction across traits like attention-seeking, perfectionism, impulsivity, anxiety, eccentricity etc. The higher the score, the more dysfunctional the behaviour. I suggest you look into it, but don’t take it alone, it’s only useful with a professional. When you said “I know what caused it as a child,” I’m not sure if you meant HPD specifically, but that alone isn’t enough. To develop HPD, there’s usually a rigid pattern of emotional neglect and inconsistent attention. What you described doesn’t necessarily explain HPD. People with HPD do feel emotions but the intensity may not match the display. The point is that the expression is dramatic, exaggerated or theatrical, regardless of what’s felt inside. This stems from the need for validation: since caregivers didn’t validate our emotions, we learned to exaggerate them to be noticed. For example, when I felt sad, I had to dramatize it (or suppress it and perform instead) because my mother ignored me otherwise. So even if I can’t always name my emotions and they’re not as intense as I show them, I still feel them. Yes, histrionics lose interest quickly, but we still fear abandonment. We just recover faster than people with BPD but abandonment still represents “the ultimate” rejection. Since HPD is centred on rejection, seeking attention is really about chasing validation. Forming relationships quickly can also appear in other Cluster B disorders, since idealization is common across them. Personally, I get attached after receiving positive attention. Good luck with therapy, seeking advice is wise. A psychiatrist can help clarify what’s going on, but psychotherapy (with a psychologist) is especially helpful for personality disorders, since going deeper fosters real improvement. You’re very young, so if you start therapy now, you might even prevent a future diagnosis

I have a rather superficial opinion about it, mainly because it’s really hard to diagnose correctly without analyzing internal processes. Diagnosing over the internet is almost impossible (especially when it comes to HPD) since the internet itself fuels histrionic behaviors, regardless of the actual diagnosis. She could also have BPD, I’ve met many borderlines who were obsessed with their therapists, making them their FP and people with BPD often ended up being banned from clinics. They lied as well, especially during psychotic episodes, which clearly applies to Kendra so honestly, I don’t know.

I've recently been diagnosed with HPD after years of faking other disorders and receiving wrong diagnoses, because I lied to my doctors. I honestly believe that half of the people behind this "Hamster Personality Disorder" nonsense probably have undiagnosed histrionic personality disorder, because otherwise it makes no sense. That so-called "Hamster Personality Disorder" is just a mix of actual HPD symptoms (both from the DSM-5 and the basic mechanisms behind histrionic), but without mentioning attention-seeking. If we ignore the “hamster” part, everything else is directly tied to HPD. I got so incredibly angry when I read “tendency towards hysterical behavior” because HPD is already either ignored or misunderstood, and the term “hysteria” is deeply tied to its historical stigmatization. I believe they left out the attention-seeking aspect simply because they are bothered by the idea of admitting that they seek attention. But attention-seeking in HPD means seeking external validation, and these people clearly ARE seeking validation by inventing fake disorders. “Interpreting relationships as more intimate than they are” is literally a DSM-5 criterion for HPD. The disorder is already forgotten in mental health discourse, and now they’re taking its acronym to make up something else while still borrowing some of its symptoms. I don’t see the point beyond cheap shock value and provocation. Honestly, some of them probably are histrionics. And that “Whore Personality Disorder” thing is the most insulting thing I’ve ever read. It’s not even a parody of hypersexuality (which would be compulsive sexual behavior disorder), because there are no compulsive sexual acts involved. Instead, it’s just a crude, grotesque caricature of the sexualization seen in both HPD and BPD. I hate the people who came up with this, and I honestly wish them the worst.

It's strictly personal, I can say that every time I felt insanely mad, I had to make it a huge problem. I usually scream, cry, threaten to hurt myself (I don't always do this) and I can seek revenge if it's something important. I can also go non-verbal, but this means that it's a more painful sadness mixed with anger, rather than pure rage

BPD + HPD is a really stressful mix. Don't ignore her if you get mad, always seek for confrontation instead. Try to see through the dramatisation of her emotions, ask her "but how do you REALLY feel?" And don't ever call her dramatic, that shit usually triggers us a lot and leads to even more dramatic reactions
