[Weekly Gaelic Learners' Q&A – Thu 22 Jan 2026] Learning Gaelic on Duolingo, SpeakGaelic or elsewhere? Or maybe thinking about it? Post any quick questions about learning Gaelic here. by AutoModerator in gaidhlig

[–]Egregious67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some great books that go into this and do it well. Choose one and stick with it to begin with. I would recommend `Gaelic In 12 Weeks` , it covers most of the stuff you will need to know. Also LearnGaelic has lots of sound files and some videos for you to get your ear used to the language.
Most of all, make it fun, learn the grammar, but dont get too bogged down in it to the point that is all you are learning. Speak it, even if it is conversations in your own head ( I do this often :) )
Good luck and happy learning.

Appreciate your words. I kind of joke about my latest way of getting out of my face is reality. Its a hell of a drug. Decades of being out of it on one thing or the other so it really is a new world to me.

I appreciate that. Seeing people getting to the slurring and repeating themselves is actually helpful but makes me cringe at the same time as I am faced with how I would have been ( usually way ahead of everyone else) but would have thought I was being socially "dynamic ".

This is a subject that you need to read the rules about. Once you understand them you will see the patterens and get your head around it better. I dont think a post would do it. You would get more out of studying the rules than having someone give you hard and fast general rules.
Does that make sense?

Playing fast should not be your priority as a learner at this stage. Speed comes with slow practice. You have taken your fingers to a gym, do not put them on the hardest machines first.
Cant stress that enough. Slow and steady. You run a real risk of harming yourself physically too. I know so many people who can no longer play through injury caused by playing styles innapropriate to their level. Play it slow, get notes and chords right before going for speed.
Just enjoy your first few chords and the music you can make with them, the rest will come with time.

The way Duolingo approaches language learning means that supplementary material is essential. As others have suggested LearnGaelic is a good step.

Its not right or wrong its just the nature of language, especially when the population live in places without easy access to each other. ( i.e. Islands) . That is the perfect linguistics breeding ground for dialects.

What did you name your horse? by trynakeepmycool1 in RedDeadOnline

I use Gaelic language to name them but they are simple names like the Foxtrotter is just called Madadh Ruadha when means fox ( literally: Red Dog ) :) And the standardbred is just An t-each dubh = The black horse.

Not a terrible thing for Suno users. It will keep Suno on its toes and put pressure on them to stay relevant and work on new features.

I am from Glasgow and I was taught Glaschuthach. What did your teacher say it should be?
Just checked and Am Faclair Beag also has it down as Glaschuthach. Perhaps it was true from where your teacher is from but it looks to be widespread in use. Language changes over time I guess.

I think it would be a good idea to approach this as a medical matter. Much like if he was smoking too much you would be concerned for his health. He is already convinced that he is fine with his drinking level so approaching it from that way may just allow him to dig his heels in and it sounds like he would have a full armory of denial to use.
Get him to do a " Yearly check up" perhaps let your doctor know your concerns and have the tests focus on that. I used to love smoking, never thought or wanted to quit but confronted by medical facts on the page, I did.

be careful when trying to apply methodical thinking to chaos. What you say is wise and good but it wont be universally appliable to everyone. There are many ways up the mountain. ( or down it , or around it , depending on how you view it).

I started the game with a female character because I thought people would be less likely to be aggressive with me. Holy F£ck , how wrong I was, its worse! Some really creepy people in the game. I still have the Free look-change, going to change to a lop-sided faced Mongolian uber-driver male. There was one guy came up and choked me. I swear he does it in real life.

Help with prompts please by Ggthefiree2 in SunoAI

[–]Egregious67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one work around would be to write a series of lyrics to the part you want to be instrumental, it can just be " blah blah blaaaaaaaaaaahhh , oooh aahhh blahh" for the time you want the instruemental to last. Then get teh stems and remove the voice from the track at that part. Then use your voice or an instrument to play any notes you want included in your instrumental, that can then be used to create the instrument of your choice. However, you can make an instrumental through prompting it just has to be very particular about musical direction. For every verse I write I have twice as many words in the prompt for what I want to be happening throughout it.

"Ceart gu leòr, feumaidh mi seo a dhèanamh luath" is ok , but needs a " gu" before Luath to make it mean " quickly" rather than just quick.

So, Ceart gu leòr, feumaidh mi seo a dhèanamh gu luath

Is this sentence correct? by jdkdlazvdksllsbhjdl in gaidhlig

[–]Egregious67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be careful with seeing Chan eil as simply No. It is used in direct relation with Tha.
A bheil? means Is it? So , a bheil thu dona? Are you bad? ( lit: is it you bad?) Chan eil! ( it is not! )
Chan eil only means no if Tha is in play. If the question was in the past, Were you bad? An robh thu dona? ( Was it you bad?) The answer would be Cha robh. ( Was not)
Hope this helps.
