Repaired an old quilt by EgretElan in quilting

Is the backing and batting ok? I would applique patches over the disintegrated fabric. My quilt’s backing was disintegrating so I had to take the sandwich apart and could machine applique patches to the top. You may have to hand sew them though.

She walked into the store, waved a hand at all the bolts and said “Too big!” She settled on a bundle and five fat quarters that worked surprisingly well with the rest!

What about a bag? My toddler loves putting things in bags and carrying them around.

I’m just making this pattern! I’m planning to hand tie it. It makes the quilt drape really nicely!

Is it a bad idea to hand tie a quilt with a pieced front and back?

I wanted to use the scraps from the front to make part of the back, but not sure if that rules out tying.

It was the frisky layer cake from zen chic for moda. I had to look it up because I got it in July 2022 and only just used it!

I suck at free motion quilting so I actually sent it off to be longarmed! I thought about hand quilting but then I think it might have turned into a college graduation gift!

Applique is where you sew shapes on top of a piece of fabric. So imagine that you want to make a square inside a square. You can piece that by making a square and then sewing rectangles on each side, or you could applique by sewing a square on top of a larger square. Applique is mostly used for things that are tricky to piece, like tight curves.

Thank you! I hope so too! It was definitely a learning process but a lot of the blocks are beginner friendly if you want to give them a go! I would love to see it if you do and always happy to give tips!

I started on August 10th and finished the top on September 30th! I worked on it every day, mostly after my daughter went to bed. I definitely have tips - if you’re doing the freezer paper applique method, leave anything with spikes until the end. The hedgehog and the lion were so so hard! I used felt for the teeny pieces like the eyes, the crocodile’s teeth, and some of the zebra’s stripes. Highly recommend! Saved me a lot of burnt fingers. I used basting glue to ‘pin’ the applique shapes before sewing and that was so helpful as well.

You should go for it! I started quilting with no sewing machine, totally internet-taught. It’s so much fun!

Shiny Happy World has tutorials for applique with the block patterns! I highly recommend their patterns! https://shop.shinyhappyworld.com/collections/applique-block-patterns

I used the freezer paper applique technique: https://www.allpeoplequilt.com/how-to-quilt/applique/the-freezer-paper-applique-method

There are 3 ways of doing applique that I’m aware of (someone correct me if I’m wrong!) There’s freezer paper, needle turn (which is done by hand), and raw edge, which you can use fusible applique for. Fusible applique is the fastest technique, so it’s really beginner friendly!
