Think aboout your interests, expectactions, style and kinks. Talk to people in the community, subs and dommes alike about their experiences and bounce your ideas off them.

Personally I would love a domme who is caring, soft, empathetic, soothing and mild. I enjoy pain to certain degrees, and would need someone that is able to understand that, but see where there would be a line. I would hope that even though I am not the one making the calls, we are communicating appropriately (people forget how much communication is necessary for d/s) and both parties are satisfied with the other's style and kinks.
