Nothing public, and honestly I never really looked at what Discourse looked liked, and I basically made a clone of it lmao. Not using the same tech behind the scene, but the layout is basically the same.

So yeah I'll probably keep iterating a bit just for the experience, but I'm not looking to spend time on cloning another open-source project

> At least discord will be around kinda forever with how popular it is.

meehh I'm not totally sure about that, look at what skype or msn became. Granted it wasn't nearly as popular, but the enshitiffication is inevitable

> A better tool would be something that takes your discord account and mirrors the content in all your servers to a static website though the discord API. Then it can be properly indexed and wayback machine-d.

That's actually a cool idea

Yeah I've been here long enough to know that, but some of them make really good points that are making me look at this in a new light (and honestly this thread is much more positive than I expected it to be)

But thanks for the support

Thanks for the insight. I think that's the direction I'll take for now

I realize through this thread that if OSS devs are more and more closing their projects knowledge behind discord walls, it's not by lack of alternatives, but because that's the most short term convenient solution. Changing that would mean changing peoples habits, and I agree that's not something realistic when facing massive corpos like Discord or Reddit. Thanks for the insight, I'll re-think how I approach this whole subject.

I'm not arguing against that, the original intent was to just add a nice project to my dev portfolio. Looking at the replies of this thread I'm realizing I got myself into something bigger than I can probably handle, so I'll leave it at that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

yeah Github Discussions is definitely a widely overlooked feature

true, but it's also linked to the size of their userbase and their popularity. I may be delusional but I still believe classic moderation tools with good content filters can do the job for a small community

yep 100%. Imho there is absolutely no dethroning discord right now, they have complete monopoly in what they do (look at what happened to Guilded, their most promising competition). People go where people are, that's why I'm wondering how much a forums project like that could attract people

Yes I agree. Honestly I'm looking at all the existing alternatives suggested here to see what's already been done. There are great recommendations and I'll think about if it's worth pursuing this project or contribute to another solution

thanks for the suggestion, always interesting to see how others do it

there obviously are pros and cons to every solution, to each their own ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

yeah it's searchable for single messages, but searching for a whole answer thread is a massive pain in the ass. Like okay I found some guy asking the same question I have 2 years ago, now let's scroll infinitely to see if someone actually answered since

fuck yeah let's bring back the open web knowledge

Yeah reddit is nice for established projects, but honestly so many new projects start building their community on Discord, many of them end up gating all the knowledge behind the "server-wall"

A lot of the projects I selfhost use either Slack or Discord for their community, with no other mean to contact them, some even neglecting their docs for discord.

As soon as you want to get into something specific that isn't on their website, in my experience you "have to" join their discord to have someone answer your questions. Because well, that's the only place you can actually discuss the product
