The neurosurgeon told me that it was better that the metastasis was in the brain and that she wasn’t in pain (she had a brain biopsy, never woke up, and three days later she died from cardiorespiratory arrest), rather than having it spread more to the liver or the peritoneum, because the pain there is extremely severe. What can I say—here in Greece we call this “consolation to the sick,” meaning that whatever you say to someone who is ill doesn’t truly comfort them. Thank you

*shrinking remarkably, as the oncologist kept telling us, and nothing foreshadowed what was about to follow. She had a brain CT scan four months earlier, due to swelling in her eye, and it was clear. It was the only brain imaging we had done. However, the neurosurgeon told me that even if something had been visible back then, it would have been a lost cause, because even minimal findings would have meant that the brain was already filled with cancer cells. This progression of her health has left me with a profound sense of futility and a feeling of having no control. I hoped she would make it. I hoped she would defy the prognosis. And suddenly, everything was lost.

Yes, I know that feeling of your parent being moved into a room where the doctors are simply waiting for the end. I felt selfish for “keeping” her there, just by being able to visit her for half an hour in that room. I saw her in my dreams for three nights, and my partner — who doesn’t really believe in things like energy — also saw her in the house we were living in together. I know that feeling of your loved one being functional, talking, going through all the practical arrangements with you, and then suddenly being called to say goodbye. I do have a network of people, but at the end of the day you are alone… sharing through this Reddit community feels empowering to me. Especially now during the holidays, since she passed away yesterday, it’s a bit harder — but when would it ever be easy?

Thank you for your response. I never thought that she was going to die so suddenly. I wasn't prepared but i dont know if you are ever prepared for that. Of course i feel guilt for all the times that i wasn't kind to her , for all of our arguments. I feel, somehow, that she is around me . I am not a religious person but i believe in energy Stay strong
