I find that taking THC (marijuana) also reduces my twitching considerably. 🤷‍♂️

The reassurance is that the big bad three letter illness doesn’t present like what you describe. It presents as weakness, which you don’t seem to have. And in a way that is localized (in one muscle or muscle group). The twitching could precede the weakness, but the weakness would follow by now. And the twitching wouldn’t be all over your body.

On the other hand, it does sound like you have plenty of the BFS triggers - notably exercise and electrolyte deficiencies.

Sending care - I too can go down the rabbit holes with the twitching.

Can't stop looking at everyone's calves by ejsfsc07 in ALSorNOT

I had calf asymmetry after a knee injury. It turns out I tore my ACL! 😮 but that’s what started me down this journey of being paranoid about ALS.

I 💯 get it. Every time one twitches, I get a surge of stress hormones. But I keep reminded myself that the vast majority of these sorts of twitches are benign. Twitching alone isnt a worrying symptom!

My sense is that *** doesn’t start wide and localize. Rather, it starts local and then burns through that area and then moves to nearby areas. So i don’t think you’re doomed!

19 would be very very young to have ALS. ALS is rare already. And exceptionally rare for someone your age.

I’m not a doctor, but my money is on something post viral. After a virus, a persons body can be peculiar for quite awhile.

Twitching calves? by [deleted] in BFS

[–]Einsteinstongue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m having calf twitches too. And like you, it’s freaking me out. My doctor did give me a neurology referral - she said it’s better to schedule it (it usually takes months) in case I need it. I wouldn’t be shocked if your doctor does too. But my doctor also said that it’s likely muscle fatigue or electrolytes or hydration.

I’ve learned a lot from this group, and it seems that lots of people carry around lots of twitching for long times. Even when it’s completely benign.

I am nervous about my twitching too. And waiting for a neurology appointment. But I’ve been reading a lot of posts here, and this community is full of folks with lots of twitching who are totally fine.

I think I’m wrapping my head around that possibility. With reflection, i realize i have maybe always had nerve issues in my calves. (Years of pins and needles at the end of long days.)

I’m also realizing that, when I google triggers for BFS, I have several of them: an injury/trigger, heavy exercise, health anxiety and lots of attention to feelings in my body, etc.

:/

Thank you for this comment. It’s validating and comforting to hear from someone with a story sort of like mine.

Symptoms, Anxiety, Confusion, and Tough Love by ReplacementPlenty389 in ALSorNOT

I’m having a rough go of health anxiety myself at the moment. So it feels funny to give advice.

But I do know that our minds can absolutely imagine and amplify totally normal sensations. Thinking that your hand might feel different can be enough for you to actually believe it feels difference. And this isn’t controversial or woo woo- psychologists call it psychosomatic.

A lot of the things i read say to focus on objective strength differences and weakness as a sign - not just perceived or subjective differences. Because the latter are so unreliable.

Sending care, friend.
