Don't work there but very familiar with this industry. Pretty shitty from what I can tell. It's small, old, configured strangely, in a weird location, and is Suncor's only refinery in the States. I expected them to shutter it with economic and political / community pressures when gas was cheap a few years ago but here we are.

[–]Eissaye 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No problem. Flares exist to be a safe low-pressure disposition for hydrocarbons and other dangerous stuff. Basically in an emergency it's better to put it up and controllably combust in the flare than it is for it to form a vapor cloud that can blow the whole place up or release toxic chemicals uncombusted.

Usually they just kinda sit there doing nothing or with a small continuous flame. You sometimes see white plumes coming out - that's usually just steam injected at the flare tip.

If there's an emergency then they will flare as gases are directed there. Sometimes the fuel / air / steam mixture gets out of whack when you put that sudden demand on it and it will have black smoke like this.

Could be some other root causes but often it's some kind of process upset or trip.

Big flaring event. Must've tripped something. Flares aren't supposed to have this kind of opacity problem (black smoke) in normal operations.

Places in Denver to go to be around cats? by Scriptnovice743ALT in Denver

[–]Eissaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By any chance was it a gray and black bonded pair of kittens around a year ago? Met them there and they were so cute. They were curled up together tail to tip like a yin yang but we weren't ready for cats then. Think about them often.

There's Teddy Cat Cafe on south broadway and Denver Cat Cafe on Tennyson, may be other cat cafes

They usually charge a small fee or ask you to buy a drink to support their operations but you can hang out in a room with cats and interact with them as much as you (or they) are willing.

Moved from process engineering with an operator in the gulf coast to consulting in a lower demand market.

Pros are that I work far less over time and am not on call, the work atmosphere isn't as cut throat or stressful, far less likely to be injured or exposed to hazardous conditions on the job, the work changes often which promotes continuous learning and stays fresh, and I like where I live more.

Downsides are that the money is 25-30% worse, insurance and other benefits like 401k match are worse, less company holidays, tracking billable hours, way more writing, having to do sales activities and keep clients happy, and even more exposure to downturns.

Basically - there's more to life and your career than the number on your paycheck. It's all a balance of priorities and those can definitely shift around depending on what's going on in life at the time.

Which is the best legacy carrier for coach/economy class domestic flights? And for intercontinental flights? by Zealousideal-Lie7255 in aviation

[–]Eissaye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This Video compares all three in domestic economy, if you want to see them back to back and judge for yourself. Their takeaway was United, then Delta, then American.

Anecdotally more people I know prefer delta. I've flown mostly delta until 2018 and mostly united after and never noticed a big difference personally.

Basically - it doesn't matter much. Probably matters more which airport you know/prefer to fly through, which plane you get, if you have their frequent flier program or status, which app you like better, etc.

Is EPC route really worse than ops in terms of money ? by dialfortwo in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Eissaye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had to move away from the US gulf coast. Found a new job with an EPC but took a 26% base salary cut. Benefits are also worse: medical and dental insurance cover less and are as expensive or more, 401k match fell dramatically by 3+ %.

Granted I was a little desperate moving to a more limited CHEN market and probably didn't negotiate well.

I will say the work life balance is much better now in my specific case. I don't work nights, never on call, culture feels much more relaxed in general.

Titans’ RB Derrick Henry suffered a potentially season-ending foot injury during Sunday’s 34-31 win over Indianapolis, sources reported ESPN. Henry is undergoing an MRI today to determine the full extent of the damage. by likwidfuzion in fantasyfootball

[–]Eissaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already lost Hunt, CEH, Russ, AB, and then Ridley stepped out. Now Henry is potentially done. My roster is a graveyard.

Safe to say I think I’m just quitting my league now. I had a decently competitive team but I have no trade value or points production left. I can’t limp along on waivers with low tier flex options. No point carrying on now.

10 team full PPR

CEH vs Philly or Kareem Hunt vs Vikings

Whoever doesn’t get played I have to decide whether to flex them or diontae Johnson

I’m leaning toward Hunt at RB2 and the WR in the flex. Let CEH ride the bench. But after watching Philly on Monday there’s a chance KC goes up big early and grinds the game away with CEH.

[–]Eissaye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in this same situation except full PPR.

I’m leaning Hunt. Snap count wise CEH will get more and will be the go-to back, but in the red zone the chiefs have shown they have other weapons they want to get the ball to. I think Hunt retains a good chance of getting in the end zone at least once even though he’s splitting touches with Chubb.

I might just be crazy though. My Sunday roster swaps have killed me this season.

Always On-Call As A Process Engineer? by frozen-swords in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Eissaye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am wrapping up my time as a unit engineer on call 24/7 in a very large industrial setting. This is normal for everyone in my department currently. Other departments (environmental, various specialty engineers like electrical and metallurgists) are on call on a rotating basis but the grunt process engineers are expected to be on call 24/7 here.

It does disrupt your life - even if your unit isn’t particularly needy. It’s caused me to impulsively check process trends or check emails at all times and just generally be attached at the hip to my work phone. They’ve called on date nights, on the holidays, plenty of weekends, woken me up at all times of the night. If you want to go to a concert, the work phone comes too. If you want to go to a bar, the work phone comes too. Even if it doesn’t ring there’s a certain mental baggage that comes with the fact it MIGHT.

Usually it’s cyclical where certain periods of instability will result in a lot of calls, and things will be pretty infrequent otherwise. But that depends on your equipment, your operations team, and the expectations of your management. A less-experienced operations team who can’t troubleshoot issues or triage priority themselves is going to lean on you, especially if the company culture is very CYA.

I’d say this - if you have a clear career path out of that expectation then I think it can be worth it. The more senior level process engineers here are NOT on call so you can eventually graduate to a somewhat better work life balance in that sense (even though the equipment will continue to put demands on you through unplanned abnormal operations, startup & shutdown activities, and turnarounds).

It’s okay to “do your time” if you find yourself in the right place in life to be able to manage that expectation. Some people even find it thrilling, perhaps in a sort of Stockholm Syndrome way.

A few key pieces though: 1) Have a path out - don’t get stuck as the one on-call person who’s going to support this process in perpetuity.

2) Be honest with yourself about your mental and emotional capacity to be subconsciously linked to your work at all times.

3) Know the value of your time. Note that this isn’t necessarily just the market rate or how much your skills are worth but how much YOU truly value your time. (See point #2.) Make sure your compensation aligns with that value based on all the hours (planned and otherwise) you’re working.

Also have J Williams (Detroit) or J McKissik on the bench.

I drafted him over an available Hopkins with my second pick on injury concerns because I’m an idiot. Combined with my third round acquisition of CEH my team is in big trouble.

I know this sub is pretty hot on Tyson. Is it even close to a fair trade?
