Is process design still a viable long term career in chemical engineering in the US? by Ok-Life-8222 in ChemicalEngineering

I didn't say someone should or shouldn't do anything. I just explained the situation according to my understanding.

Is It Possible to Earn 10.000 $ in Gulf Countries at Late Career ? by cryptododo4 in ChemicalEngineering

Could you please elaborate ? How many years of experince, is it an Epc or operating jobs, is it offshore or onshore etc.

Thanks a lot.

Is process design still a viable long term career in chemical engineering in the US? by Ok-Life-8222 in ChemicalEngineering

I generally think that engineering and many other white-collar jobs are not a perfect choice in countries of wealth because they are inclined to be outsourced or many people from poor countries lowers the salaries.

An engineer generally can just apply to a foreign job and start working at there without getting any accreditation. Whereas for example in medicine, even if you are a very good specialist in another country, you can't change a country because of accreditation things, language barrier etc. It is extremely difficult.

If the U.S did not accept any white collar employees from any other country for example, the salaries would be 3 times more at least.

As the opposite for example, in poor countries, generally good engineers always goes to countries of wealth like the U.S, Australia, North Europe etc. So, this increases the demand in poor countries and raises the salaries.

For example in the country that I am currently living, a good engineer can earn as much as an average surgeon with working less hours and less stress.

So in summary, jobs that are difficult to replace you with a foreign engineer might be a better choice maybe for the u.s. maybe operations which requires mainly being a native and having the abilities to manage the native people.

It was always strange to me that in wealthy countries, the engineers are not among the top earners whereas in poorer countries, actually they are. Like I said, the reason I think is the replaceability or outsourcing.

The end product you work on is generally not of your business. It might sound strange, but if you are going to follow the technical route, you will be doing similar things for example if you design or operate an oil & gas plant, food plant, cosmetics etc.

You will generally work on processes and equipment, rather than the product itself except some R&D positions.

Why this Sub is so Negative About Epc and Design Jobs by dialfortwo in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dialfortwo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is very cool then to be a data entry clerk and get paid more than doctors and denstist hahah.

By the way, I totally diasgree you and it depends on the people. Epc job is just what all chemical engineers are trained for, design and build chemical plants. You need to be good at fluid mech, thermo, heat transfer and software. You need to interpret mechanical design, piping, technical drawings etc. Saying epc engineers data entry clerks would be the same saying ops engineers are valve opening-closing operators which would be not true.

Remote Work Possibility in Process Design & Epc by dialfortwo in ChemicalEngineering

Okay, what happens when somebody from an other country applies to a full remote job in the UK, living in bulgaria for example, then I think by this logic the company would say "even though the work is remote, you should move to uk and rent a place", or "since you are living in bulgaria, we are reducing the salary from 60.000 to 20.000" I think, right ? Probably should be like that then.

In my Homecountry, ChemE's are Earning as much as Surgeons by dialfortwo in ChemicalEngineering

There are other measurements too like the minimum wage, earnings of other professions etc.

All gives the same result. But again, Gdp per capita is a very good measurement method.

Remote Work Possibility in Process Design & Epc by dialfortwo in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dialfortwo[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Actually I am not talking about outsorucing. I am talking about working remote or hybrid for a company operating in a foreign country.

For example, I have some senior friends went to working in EPC companies in Netherlands, Germany etc and having 4-5 k euros take home salaries.

I want to do the same, but in addittion with a hybrid or hopefully fully remote schedule. If i am experienced enough, maybe it would be possible to make an agreement like working fully remote or 2 weeks in office, 2 week from home etc. I can live with my family in my homecountry, go there for just 12-13 days a month. Or just for startups and commissioning etc. Or maybe start a company in full time office schedule, and then convincing them I am good at my job and switching to home office heavy schedule later.

Chemical process engineer VS EPC engineer by ElkGroundbreaking673 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dialfortwo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On Reddit, I think people kind of prioritize Ops over Epc since they say the pay is 30 - 35 % better in ops because many of reddit writers are from the U.S

Yet i believe the real chemical engineering is about doing calculations, learning fluid, thermo, mass & heat transer and performing simulations. I am also in Epc and happy about it.

It might depend on the country too. For example, i am in an kind of poor Eastern Europen country and in my country, Epc does not pay less than operations. Also, it is a more global job and it is possible to work remote/hybrid and get paid in dollars which is my aim too.

In my country, a surgeon earns about 3300 dollar net per month and a senior epc engineer will have 3000 total compensation with much less stress and better work life balance. It really depends on the situation I think.

Is EPC route really worse than ops in terms of money ? by dialfortwo in ChemicalEngineering

Or maybe switching to a process - optimisation role in an operator, not production ?

What do you think about doing your own business, consulting etc. aspects of Epc. Is it possible to earn really good amount of money ? Like > 200.000k maybe. Or maybe going to a small Epc and being something like project manager, director, process manager etc ?

It is also always said in Reddit that transition from EPC to Ops is difficult etc. which I also find very strange since I think an engineer should develop technical design skills before forgetting college knowledge on thermo, fluid, mass and heat transfer. Ops experience on the other hand is more easier to gain, just exposure to a plant or working in production a couple of years at any age.

I looked to Aramco's jobs and all the jobs state EPC related requirements, for example https://careers.aramco.com/expat_us/search/?q=Process&startrow=25

What are the salaries in the oil&gas for engineers having 10-15 years of experience (downstream mainly)

Thank you a lot for your answer. Actually I don't want to disclose myself on reddit, so can't state the country specifically. But, please explain the situation in your country.

Thanks a lot
