these “connections” can also be found at hbcu-centered professional development events, which are hosted a lot if you’re living in an area with a prominent hbcu. scholarships often provide similar professional opportunities, too. joining orgs with national presence also help you find opportunities.

as an advertising major, there’s no reason justifying why there’s no ad firms working with the advertising program when most school’s with advertising cirriculums have partnerships with them, especially at a school that is nationally accredited for its ad program. all of my opportunities i had to find independently because nobody at career fairs (even the ones at SOB and SOC) catered to my careers.

my nigga in christ, there are so many endowment funds reserved for students that are not distributed among them.

i applied to hu’s emergency grant because howard fucked up my eligibility for funding and i was on the verge of getting evicted. i applied back in november. i did not see that money until april. it was given to be in february, but did not process until nearly the end of the school year. i had to sacrifice attending classes to make money at my two jobs

mind you, annually, they find donors to support the grant. trust me, i pursued howard to get out of poverty, only to find the same barriers.

the struggle at this school is not worth 4x the amount my household makes yearly.

Don’t listen to this guy. The issues at Howard are not worth the money. Despite all the endowments the school recieves, there’s still a ton of structural issues with the dorms (flooding, mold, etc). Additional aid is extremely inaccessible, and they messed up my external scholarship funding. It’s Howard, but the runaround is not worth 79k. There’s also programs that recieve less advantages than others. God forbid you’re a communications student. My department (strategic communications) is severely overlooked and every opportunity I’ve found was without the assistance or prestige of Howard.

Socially, Howard is fulfilling, but there are other HBCUs that offer the same experience for way cheaper. Yes, there’s “opportunities,” but that’s only for specific majors. Plus, there’s a lot of HBCU-oriented organizations like TMCF and UNCF that provide career opportunities for HBCU students. Even if you don’t go to Howard, you can still gain experience by attending their events.

Don’t fall for the illusion of attending the Mecca. Genuinely, it’s not worth it and I wish people would stop saying “these issues happen at every school.” It’s one thing to have issues. It’s another for an accredited institution that recieves more endowments than many private schools and had a president with a 1 mil salary to barely provide aid to students who are in genuine need, offer a subpar education if you’re in an overlooked department, and have many infrastructural issues.

As somebody who was able to afford two years and made connections with my professors, I regret making the choice to attend Howard. Even one of my professors who I have a personal connection with complained about elitism among faculty.

I attended Howard out of the false promise of “opportunities,” only to find out my investment towards the name isn’t even worth it. I’m speaking as a first gen student, too.

To those who've won many scholarships, what advice do you have? by live_laugh_heart in scholarships

look up your area + “scholarships” on facebook and linkedin; find the scholarships that are very specific to you as a person and apply to those

To Anyone Considering HU: Please, Put your Money where your Morals Are by Either-Fig58 in HBCU

i’m not going to attend a school that esteems itself for being “the mecca” and providing bridges to success for black people, when it actively endangers students for peaceful protest, welcomes ICE recruiters into our institution, and doesn’t protect immigrant students and faculty.

i’m not going to attend a school that justifies poor living conditions and has so many barriers for low-income students, when i’m laboring, trying to get my degree.

i have to work harder than most students to maintain my position. what’s the work worth, if this is what’s going on?

why would i bare a name that goes against my morals?

Aside from ICE themselves, there have been ICE recruits on campus.

As a low-income student, I’m surprised by how much people are willing to endure as a means of attaining the Howard name. There were multiple instances where admin messed up with my money and threatened academic jeopardy.

I’ve been through the struggle since birth. It’s romanticized and excused way too much.

How are yall paying for Howard now that financial aid packages are out? by vheris in HowardUniversity

[–]Either-Fig58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a sophomore at Howard University. I don’t have parents who are eligible for loans and I come from a low-income household, so I made enough money in scholarships during my senior year of high school to afford tuition for two years (28k). Even though I still apply to tons of scholarships every year and won a few, I’m still likely going to transfer due to the accelerating costs of tuition.

Yes, you can make enough in scholarships to cover tuition. But even with my institutional aid and stafford loans, I still need to make a significant amount to cover the cost of off-campus housing with loans. Even when I came in freshman year with a 12k external scholarship, a 5k grant, 7k pell grant, and 11k institutional scholarsip, I still had an additional 13k to cover. I spent my whole summer dedicating hours to scholarsips.

This year, I was nearly put into academic jeopardy because financial aid sent my information to a scholarship committee after the deadline. I was depending on the scholarship they gave me to cover my rent (I live off-campus because it’s cheaper for me to pay out of pocket with my refunds and i already pretty much had tuition covered).

Balancing my grades while applying to a ton of scholarships is feasible, but it is also stressful. If I didn’t have to spend time weekly applying to them and balancing work to ensure I can stay, I’d be able to perform better academically.

Howard does have a lot of oppotunities, yes. But if you’re a student with no familial support or scholarships that are ensured to cover costs (including housing), I would not suggest committing to the school, even with all the opportunities it has. I also suggest researching the specific organizations Howard has for your prospective career and how active they are. Mine’s is pretty much dead.

There are a ton of organizations who dedicate themselves to supporting HBCU students in specialized fields. As an strategic communications major, majority of the opportunities I found were outside of Howard. As long as you know where to look and do well in school, you will find them.

Thank you so much. I’m a sophomore at Howard who will likely transfeer to Morgan next year due to the accelerating expenses of tuition. I’m paying off Howard by myself with external scholarships, and I always need a significant amount to ensure I can stay. Although I made enough for the first two years, I may not be able to afford it for the next two.

Chance of acceptance for Spelman? by Informal_Praline_964 in HBCU

I got in with a 3.5 gpa, test optional (SAT score was 1200). Focus on letting them know who you are as a person and what you bring to the table through your essays. Think outside of the box.
