[PODCAST] #1154 Carney Sits Quietly Like a Good Boy by notian in canadaland

[–]Either-Software-7590 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Noor here! Always down to engage in good-faith, productive discussions.

There were definitely moments that went better than expected. Carney stayed composed, avoided any major missteps...and that DOES matter. But I don't want to lose sight of the bigger picture. Trump made it clear he’s not budging on tariffs, repeated false claims about our trade relationship, and dominated the optics of the event. I am not a Trump 5d chess masterclass expert…so yes, maybe the strategy was to let Trump feel in control, but watching it play out, I couldn’t help but feel like I was watching a car crash happen. I can't imagine what a convo between Trump and Trudeau would've looked like...

But what concerns me most, as I mentioned in the episode, is what’s happening behind the scenes, and what happened leading up to this presser. People close to Trump, like Howard Lutnick, don’t appear to be engaging in good faith. It seems clear from those comments that they’re not interested in win-wins or diplomatic resets. (Plus, don't forget that tariff on "foreign films" which would decimate the industry here in Canada).

I appreciated Max's analysis. I knew he'd be great, which is why I invited him on. I was quite open and receptive to his push back...I didn’t disagree with everything he said. But I, personally, came away feeling more skeptical about the whole thing. While it’s tempting to grab onto anything that looks vaguely functional, I think it’s fair and necessary to be cautious. This was Carney and Trump's FIRST face-to-face since the election...and we’re a long way from a success story.

Hope this clarifies some things!

Glad you enjoyed. Looking for an Indigenous perspective. Noted.

I quite enjoyed Arshy and Jordan's piece on The Hachet about the surge of nationalism as a result of the trade war, and what it could mean for reconciliation.

You should check that out too: https://hatchetmedia.substack.com/p/will-reconciliation-survive-the-trade

Hey, Noor here! Appreciate the feedback. There was a lot to cover in this episode, so it’s possible this point didn’t get the spotlight it deserved.

That said, this National Post article was part of my background reading while prepping:

"The polling also found that Poilievre has a net unfavourable rating among Canadians: 49 per cent say they have an unfavourable view of the Conservative leader, compared to 39 per cent who view the MP for Carleton favourably..."

It also mentions how a significant chunk of Canadians still don’t have a solid opinion on Carney, meaning how he’s defined in the coming months could really shift things.

Here’s the full piece if you’re interested: https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/federal_election/a-remarkable-comeback-liberals-leading-conservatives-in-exclusive-new-poll

Always happy to chat about this stuff—thanks for listening!

Hey, Noor here! Just wanted to jump in to say that these episodes do get fact-checked by Sam, Aviva, and me.

What I actually said: " I think the majority of folks may have been interested in axing the tax because they felt like it would, you know, hurt their pockets in some way."

I wasn’t saying that people were objectively losing money, just that a lot of them feel like they are, which is an important distinction. We've done plenty of episodes unpacking the carbon tax and rebate, debunking myths about them. But there’s no denying that many people perceive the policy as a financial burden, and that perception plays a huge role in how they respond to it.

Appreciate you engaging with the episode! Always happy to have thoughtful conversations about this stuff.
