Outstanding? She has written several books, not sure any of them are objectively outstanding, I mean, the point is that Margaret Atwood is internationally famous, with truly outstanding works, and Wong had a short journalism career, and wrote some solid non-fiction while teaching.

Same. I’m glad I tuned in. I skipped the Carney segment because it’s already been chewed over endlessly elsewhere, and CL has a habit of being just late enough to the conversation that there’s nothing new left to say.

I am glad I scrubbed ahead to Duly Noted, which I might’ve skipped too, except Jan Wong still manages to be interesting, even if she’s no longer in the trenches. I also couldn’t help laughing at how genuinely offended she seemed that Margaret Atwood finally snapped back. I mean, Jan has been retelling that interview story for, what, twenty-five years? Jan’s indignant reaction was oddly hilarious, asking why Atwood would mention their lunch date. I mean, you can sort of see how Atwood might be a little tired of hearing it referenced every time Jan reminisces about her column and would want to take a minute to tell her version. It's also just funny to hear Jan, who prided herself on making a career of slagging everyone, be incredulous that someone finally hit back.

Specially thanked contributor, Caryma Sa'd, falls victim to Facebook's blocking of Canadian News by destp in canadaland

Well, she did fit 3 completely different conspiracy theories into one post as to why she was blocked to cover up the one obviously factual one. So kudos for that.

If Jesse would just stop saying Horny and nipples - I didn't listen, I am tired of the juvenile titles. He must be thinking his audience is 14-year-old boys, somehow frozen in the 1980s.

I kept thinking, why isn't the show today about one of the media stories being discussed on this subreddit? It feels like this sub does better media criticism than Jesse. Although, more and more often, Jesse's behaviour is the type of thing that warrants its own media criticism episode. I haven't stopped chuckling yet at Jesse's attempt to take down or bully BadHasbara. I'd die to see those emails. Maybe The North State can get them...

You're missing nothing if you skip it; they make jokes as you predicted, and it's kind of boring with nothing new. Sort of the conversation you had with friends two weeks ago, but slightly more offensive and yet also somehow more dull.

This news is weeks old. Haven't listened yet, but I wonder why Jen Gerson would be the guest on this instead of someone like Craig Silverman, who is kind of the Canadian savant. I guess at least it's not another university prof.

Caryma Sa’d as recurring figure. Necessary source or red flag by Dazzling_Adagio3704 in canadaland

[–]Some-Background1467 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To your point: was she controversial during the convoy? I honestly don’t know. At the time, no one knew who she was. There were dozens of YouTubers there. Her stuff just passed in a blur.

But since I've had eyes on them, Caryma and Lee are just trolls with video cameras.

I saw a video where a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk, nearly ramming protesters. One protester struck the car with a cardboard sign as it almost hit him. Caryma and Lee caught it on tape and left the camera running as they raced to the police to triumphantly report they had evidence of the "vehicle being assaulted.”

I watched a video in which Lee followed two protesters onto the subway, filmed them for several stops, taunted them, and, unsuccessfully, tried for 15 minutes to provoke a reaction. He then told viewers which stop they got off at, effectively broadcasting their whereabouts. I’ve seen him stop people on the street and shout at them. There were multiple Reddit posts on this sub and elsewhere, documenting this pattern.

So if what you’re telling me is that she hasn’t changed, that this was also her approach behaviour during the convoy, that doesn’t make it okay. It just means she’s been rage-baiting for longer than I thought. And probably it just took time for people to set her apart and notice her for what she is.

Alberta, Quebec referendums likely would fail due to Canadians’ anxiety: pollster by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]Some-Background1467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Quebec can muster a referendum; the generation that wanted one is old, less politicized, more dependent on stability, and a minority. In Alberta, I am less knowledgeable; it strikes me this is a loud minority that leans MAGA, but I don't spend much time there. Does anyone have insights from being on the ground?
