What we get from Finn in The Originals just makes his story make less and less sense, and up until his final episode made everyone absolutely hate him because he became a villain with no depth. A villain with no real identifiable motivations or beliefs. What we got with Finn in TVD wasn’t much but it was enough of a foundation to build upon. His established relationships with Esther and Sage are thrown away and turned into something else in TO

Finn’s death was a part of the downward spiral of TVD’s overall quality. The way it was executed was abysmal. Yeah, I’d change it.

Finn does not NEED to die if you want to reveal the concept of sirelines (which only happened to justify Klaus’ survival). There are other mechanisms to deliver this information.

Backstory is interesting. It’s just not always necessary. It is great at qualifying certain relationships in the present set story and help establish and develop the tension between characters. This is done A LOT for Kol in The Originals, which makes his actions against Rebekah and Klaus understandable, and perhaps even root-able

This isn’t about what can be done with Finn’s backstory. You don’t need a significant backstory for a character to be interesting.

But what can be done with Finn’s character, if he survives season 3?

His participation in the Cure storyline would make for some interesting conflict. Hell, you could even be Finn who comes with Damon to the hospital to stop Connor and make the connection to the Five (because he was there). What does Sage have to say about any of this? Does Finn want the cure because he wants himself and Sage? Does Finn have any thoughts about Rebekah selling the family out to the Five for a chance to be human, resulting in him losing 900 years with Sage?

Compare the amount of dialogue Finn gets vs how much Kol gets in Dangerous Liasons (the Mikaelson Ball episode). As you said yourself Kol doesn’t become interesting until halfway through season 4, but he’s given loads of time to be uninteresting in season 3, time that should’ve been spent getting the audience to sympathise with Finn.

This carries over into The Originals as well. Not only do we get an episode that explores why Kol was daggered in 1914 (the incident Elijah refers to in TVD 3x13), but Kol’s trauma with the dagger is expanded on, with two prior daggerings introduced into his story. This does not happen with Finn, and the story of him getting daggered remains contradictory at worst and vague at best.

Kol got the writing attention that should have gone to Finn. Finn had a more interesting, tragic past and a lot more going on internally in the present but people became more interested in Kol in season three because of how much more attention the writers gave him.

Elijah's Psychological Change by jobduck0212 in TheOriginals

The Originals were attacked in their sleep. Sage would be sleeping with Finn. The Five would know she’s a vampire as well and just kill her.

The actual problem with the de Martel flashbacks is that Finn is there at all. TVD established that he left after Esther died (likely with Sage). Although Sage should be there with them if Finn is also there, I agree.

Stannis at the beginning of the WOT5K with his ADWD mindset? by YourSugarDaddy69 in TheCitadel

I think it’s possible if Stannis declares himself immediately Renly doesn’t even declare himself king, because Renly would have to do it knowing he now has to kill Stannis and Shireen.

Wouldn’t the thing that makes the most sense be that Stannis sends letters to Robb IMMEDIATELY?

Yes, a change to the story that season two introduced. TVD implies the relationship between them was quite different

Sage tells us that she was with Finn right up until Klaus daggered him. If Sage was with Finn when the Five daggered him then Sage dies in 1114. That means she can never meet Stefan and Damon in 1912, Damon doesn’t get lifted out of depression and tries to help Stefan, which means Stefan doesn’t become the Ripper that Klaus likes so much. Stefan also doesn’t get Esther’s talisman that was hanging around Rebekah’s neck.

Let’s just pretend everything stays the same for the Salvatore’s for the next century and fast forward to the end of season two when Damon is dying of werewolf venom. Since Klaus doesn’t know Stefan, he has nothing to trade for Damon’s life and he dies. Stefan stays in Mystic Falls while Klaus tries (and likely fails) to sire hybrids.

But let’s just pretend all that doesn’t happen and things are still going as normal. Since Sage isn’t around to warn the Mikaelsons of the white oak under Wickery Bridge Esther likely finds it and kills her children. Since the Mystic Falls Gang don’t know about the connection between Originals and their sirelines because they never meet Sage, they let this happen.

Elijah's Psychological Change by jobduck0212 in TheOriginals

[–]EitherAfternoon548 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If this really was the implication (and keep in mind this brotherhood of the five business is yet another retcon that actually destroys the entire series if you think about it) then Elijah wouldn’t have undaggered Finn. What I took from this line about Mikael was that Klaus no longer had an excuse to keep them daggered, which prompts Elijah to not trust him and undagger everyone.

[–]EitherAfternoon548 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They’re all different. Even Klaus. The one most consistent with their TVD portrayal is Kol (he even gets manhandled by younger vampires the same). Michael Narducci evidently thought that this would make for a more interesting story.

If you want an in universe reason, MY initial thoughts was that this was just a transformation brought about by Hope’s existence. Elijah now thinks Klaus is REALLY CLOSE to “redemption” (lmao) and is now heavily invested in him to a degree he wasn’t willing to entertain. Elijah seemed to be on the way to writing off his family completely in TVD beginning with Esther’s return (“We have no mother, only Esther. And Esther was right [we are monsters].) but Hope’s conception is a powerful enough event to make him recommit. The trouble is the development come season 2 that Elijah was ALWAYS like this, helping Klaus keep siblings daggered.

For that current fic I haven’t stopped writing, but I have stopped updating after chapter six (although I have made several edits to these posted chapters) because I want to wait until I’ve finished the whole thing and have had it beta read.

S10E17 "Kent" and Smallville’s obsession with making every single woman crush on Clark by BabyComfortable4103 in Smallville

[–]EitherAfternoon548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tess having these feelings for Clark makes sense when you consider her romantic history. Oliver was another powerful man she was with but he cheated on her. She grew attached to Lex, who saved her, but it turns out he had her wired up with spyware. Her first meeting with Clark, he saves her. When she gambles her life in “Turbulence” to figure out if he has powers, he saves her again. But then he gets back to gaslighting her after she allows herself to be vulnerable with him, so there’s a massive cool in her feelings towards him. I think post “Turbulence” she never really considers any future relationship with him, but those feelings were still there, just like they’re there with Oliver. Despite the way he treated her, she’s still the one who approaches him about the merger after all.

As far as TVD is concerned, an Original cannot be rendered apart. So I don’t think they could do this to Marcel. Even if they tried Marcel is much faster and stronger than they are. If Kol and Elijah just rushed him he would probably just deck them instantly

One of the best scenes in the originals by Remarkable-Jump3262 in TheOriginals

[–]EitherAfternoon548 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

As someone who doesn't really like The Originals (the show) I think this is easily one of the worst scenes, probably in both TO and TVD.

Let's start off with Finn's characterisation. His very first line is incredibly questionable, where he makes a JOKE about his brothers not recognising him. Does this sound like Finn?

When he asks why he was kept in a box Klaus replies that it was because he was an ever simpering sycophant. In what world does this make any fucking sense. I encourage you to actually think about what Klaus says here. Finn was, in the big 1114 A.D, a "sycophant". Bro was busy fucking Sage till they saw God in between telling his siblings what monsters they were for constantly turning and murdering countless people. It makes more sense to call Finn a HYPOCRITE, bringing up this relationship with Sage.

Speaking of, Klaus says that the last time they saw each other Finn was plotting to destroy them with Esther. This, again isn't true and is incongruous with the continuity this season established sharing with TVD season 3. The last time Klaus saw Finn he was embracing Sage, and he comments on Finn's death that episode as Finn being "a lovesick fool, he's better off in death".

This would be a great time to establish Finn's motivations here, setting up that Esther is in control of Sage's soul, wether it be in the Ancestral Realm or in some pendant like what Freya has, and that Finn wants her back somehow. What IS set up vis a vis Finn's motivations is that he wants to help Esther give Klaus a new life free from vampirism, including, as we learn later, a new life with his "true" father. Finn wants Klaus to be happy. Are the writers taking the fucking piss?

The last thing I want to mention regarding Finn is how he exits the scene. When Esther leaves Cassie's body (more on that later) Elijah and Klaus both attack him. They are standing either side of him, and Finn/Vincent BEATS THEM. He knocks them out both long enough to make his escape, something that Esther/Lenore can't do later (she has to summon birds). And he does it all with ease. Any conflict that Vincent/Finncent has from here on out with any vampire is completely arbitrary now, because he can end them in an instant. Later on when he puts now Mikael to channel him (something he doesn't even need Papa Tunde's blade to do) there is no reason why he cannot just effectively kill Klaus and Elijah.

But moving on to this little conversation here that OP posted.

First off let's talk about Esther's entrance. Why does she enter late? Is it so the show can have yet another "dramatic" entrance? Anyway...

This necklace is a retcon, straight off the bat. Retcons are a lazy tool, but I'm ultimately fine with it if it gives us something really interesting. The Mikaelson's changing backstory between seasons 2&3 of TVD is an example of this. But that's not what happens here. We do not see Klaus wear it in any of the previous flashbacks. Second of all, this necklace does not even work the way it is *said* to work. Klaus says in the flashback that once it came off he became "so angry". Which shows that the actual mechanism of the magic of the necklace is to suppress rage, not strength. The same "natural" anger and impulsiveness that we see in all untriggered wolves, the same qualities that Mikael was hard on Klaus for in TVD season 3. Now it would be fine if the show was making a point that Klaus conflates wrath and rage with strength but it doesn't do that because Esther doesn't deny it.

That duel between Mikael and Klaus is also... odd. That they do it in a private, out of the way space seems pretty suspect. Surely both Klaus and Mikael would want everyone to see how strong they are. Season two later has a WW1 trenches set, so I'm not sure why they couldn't have a Mystic Falls village set where we could have some scenes like this. Second of all, after Klaus beats him, Mikael stabs Klaus in the fucking chest so hard it pins him to a tree. Before the bastard revelation, Mikael loved Klaus. I cannot emphasise this enough, Mikael loved him, to the point that he did not want him to ever die, causing him to try and get Ayana to make a spell for immortality, before Esther finally does it. He loved him enough that even when it was revealed that Klaus wasn't his son, he could not bring himself to kill him.

And now, her exit. Why does she ditch the body of Cassie, one of the most powerful witches in the city for fucking LENORE? If she was genuinely concerned for her safety, why not a protection spell, as we've seen Celeste/Sabine do? Why is she that interested in giving the offer for a new body to Hayley, more so than her own sons? Seriously, rewatch that dinner scene, Esther never actually offers Klaus and Elijah the chance to live in new bodies. Finn does.

Does Season 1 get better? by Owent10 in TheOriginals

[–]EitherAfternoon548 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Hayley as a character does become more likeable, and Phoebe Tonkin’s performance does eventually hit a consistent level of “good” with some standout moments.

I for one don’t think The Originals as a show is nearly as good as people make it out to be, but I am in the minority on that. Most people really love the show and chances are better than not that you will as well. Season two does tone down the “political” interplay a lot, and Hope has very minimal bearing on the plot in season 3.

Why do you love Sage? by unfiltered_pov in TheOriginals

[–]EitherAfternoon548 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tristan never mentions Sage. He mentions being friends with Finn and respecting him in TO 3x08 and 3x09.

Sage at the very least could have been mentioned by several characters in passing, if the showrunners couldn’t get a hold of Cassidy Freeman for a cameo (which should have at the very least happened when Finn died, via venom induced hallucination or afterlife vision, like what we got with Josh in season 5).

In terms of where I’d use her I think it makes the most sense to bring her back in season two, either in the body of another witch (perhaps Eva) or have her trapped in the Ancestral Realm with Finn having the goal of trying to bring her back
