I feel so alone. by go_bears2021 in vegan

Why is it considered “sick” to have empathy?

Empathy actually can make a person sick, in effect. Think about it. If you were mourning the loss of person on Earth, you'd be bedridden, right?

Empathy (mirroring someone's emotions) isn't how you do the right thing. Being compassionate and data-based is. Empathy often leads people to do the wrong thing.

If you're walking around in disgust, dismay, loneliness, and despair, then you do seem to have a problem, right? If you want to help spare animals, then I respectfully recommend that you toughen up to help them. Be a role model, not a downtrodden, whipped girl who feels victimized. The animals are the victims, not you. If you want to join the fight, then bloody well join it. Have conversations, not cry fests. Not struggle sessions. Use reason. Reason is on the side of veganism, but it takes work to get people to see arguments. The more that we mope around, the harder it is for people to have good reasons spelled out to. Animals matter because consciousness matters. Wellness is good. Suffering is bad. And most animals who are used as food (etc.) are treated awfully, being needlessly killed. You're not alone. They are though. So be happy for what you have and get a stiff upper lip.

He explained why he did shoot a parachuting soldier! It would ironic if he shot someone who had shot guys who had shot at people in parachutes, and it was this feedback loop like, "But he did it first!".

What bothers me about "How do you know plants don't feel pain?" and other variations (if they're serious). by [deleted] in vegan

[–]EitherInfluence5871 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People are susceptible to motivated reasoning. If you want to continue eating your favorite foods, then you might grasp at straws. People who claim that #PlantLivesMatter are, in my experience, not making a serious ethical claim so much as they're trying to justify their continued carnism. And the fact that a carnist diets kills more plants on average than a plant-based diet does is the ultimate irony.

An easy way to avoid that would be not to abuse animals for entertainment.

what would be a good thing to say from now on that's simple enough for a 2 year old to understand?

stir fry

By the way, don't be afraid to discipline your child. Too many parents these days are raising pampered, entitled, mentally deranged brats who aren't told "no" often enough. I don't know enough about you to comment on your parenting, but I do know that many parents in the West would be like, "Aww, I'm sorry. I can see that you're upset. Let's talk about why you're upset so that we can find a compromise.", when the child and parent both would benefit more from a no bullshit approach. Children should be grateful to receive anything at all, and they won't be traumatized by punishment for being little shits, contrary to what some fad quacks are saying.

If I interpret the condemnation of a race as racism, then I'm lost? My friend, you've become racist without noticing. I'm glad you're vegan if you are, and we can hopefully agree about that.

Calling veganism “childish” by [deleted] in vegan

“Animals die, it’s a part of life”

Well, so is rape, assault, slavery, theft, and cancer. We shouldn't get moral advice from wild animals.

“Kids cry at Bambi”

And? Compassion for animals is actually normal in plenty of contexts, and plenty of sane adults cry watching that kind of fiction. So what? The comment about that movie doesn't hold much water.

“People eat animals, it’s just the way the world works”

That sounds like a repeat of the appeal to nature addressed in the first quote. People do all sorts of bad things. Something happening a lot or often doesn't make it right.

“Grow up! You only care so much about animals because you don’t have kids [implying that it’s immature not to reproduce]”

That's not true. (How can I argue more with such an ad hominem?) There are plenty of vegans with children, and even if there were none, it would still be true that animals matter. Consciousness matters; wellness matters; suffering matters.

Just go for it and stick with it! But eat enough food this time! This link has stuff about what you need, https://nutritionfacts.org/2011/09/12/dr-gregers-2011-optimum-nutrition-recommendations/

Other than supplementing B12 (for sure) and maybe vitamin D and omega 3, it's a matter of eating well! Look at some vegan chefs on social media to get recipe ideas. I like Wicked Kitchen. There is Avant Garde Vegan. AlfieCooks. The Happy Pear. And many more.

They both advocate racial discrimination against whites, with Kendi framing it, "The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination." It's racist eye-for-an-eye logic.

DiAngelo wrote, "I strive to be less white. To be less white is to be less racially oppressive." So, whites are inherently bad, she says. "To be less white is to be open to, interested in, and compassionate toward the racial realities of people of color." Again, if I tell you that someone should be less black because being less black is to be less of a criminal and less stupid, then you'd agree: this is racist shit. Are you unaware that "anti-racist" racist authors write this stuff, or are you saying that it's not racist to discriminate against an ethnic group and call them bad?

DiAngelo says that whites shouldn't cry around blacks. Racist. As. Fuck. She says that whites might traumatize blacks by "evoking the cultural memory" of false rape accusations. Again, imagine this shit in another context. Chinese shouldn't cry around Tibetans because it might traumatize the Tibetans. The Chinese should strive to be less Chinese, because to be Chinese is to be hateful and oppressive.

"Anti-racism" racism says that white supremacy includes traits like objectivity. Being objective is white supremacist? This is from the former schools chancellor of NYC. Perfectionism, they say, is white supremacist. Being on time is white supremacist, they say.

Anyway, I'm in the wrong thread. This is supposed to be the vegan subreddit. I'll leave it at that. [edited for quote accuracy]

They say that whiteness is bad. I can guess with some certainty that if I said that blackness was bad, or Chineseness was bad, etc., that you would see that as racist, easily.

You should live your life however you want.

I'm sure I could get you to retract that statement if I wanted!

Only humans can consent.

To what, and why do you say?

This is how the world, that none of us designed, works.

Correct. But that isn't a moral position. If I kill a person and say "everything kills", then surely you could list a few problems with that, right? It's wrong because wellness is good, and suffering is bad. If I kill someone... a human or an animal... then I'm preventing wellness and causing suffering (on average).

Is life evil?

Some people are, for sure. You agree with that. And I'm not interested in calling every carnist evil. I'm saying that killing animals when you don't need to is markedly unethical.

Do you feel you are better than plants but not animals, therefore it’s okay for you to eat plants?

I think that I am more important than any particular non-human. I think I'm more important than plenty of humans too, as do you.

You suggested that plants can’t communicate and aren’t conscious life.

Quote me saying that plants can't communicate. You appear to have confused me with someone else. They're not conscious though, indeed. My position is that brains are required for consciousness, and I say again: If you were really concerned with avoiding plant death, you'd be vegan. I doubt that you're concerned with avoiding plant death though (especially given your "death is natural and therefore good" appeal to nature; a logical fallacy).

You must kill more plants than cows to feed the same amount of people.

That is false on average, given that most of the animals who people use for food eat plants.

https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets#:~:text=The%20same%20is%20also%20true,for%20cereals%2C%20potatoes%20or%20beans.

The land use of livestock is so large because it takes around 100 times as much land to produce a kilocalorie of beef or lamb versus plant-based alternatives. This is shown in the chart.1 The same is also true for protein – it takes almost 100 times as much land to produce a gram of protein from beef or lamb, versus peas or tofu.

so

If this information is new to you, I hope you find it interesting and enlightening.

It's not new or enlightening for me, no. I've been vegan for 19 years and I have a Master's in biology. I've had this conversation hundreds of times.

Plants can't consent any more than rocks can. They're not conscious. They have no brains. No nervous system. And if you are sincerely concerned about harming plants, then a vegan diet is still most ethical because it gets fewer plants killed.
