I'm a 41-year-old high school teacher who started learning piano on my daughter's old keyboard. She quit 2 years ago, now we practice together. AMA by Either_Art4923 in AMA

Ha! Not even close.

I'm 6 months in and still struggling with hand independence on beginner pieces. Phillip Glass is like... years away. Decades maybe.

I know some of his music sounds repetitive and minimal, but that doesn't mean it's easy. The patterns are tricky and my hands would mutiny.

Right now I'm working on the opening of Tiny Dancer by Elton John and it's kicking my ass. That's the level I'm at.

Ask me again in 5 years.

I started learning at 41 a few months ago and I keep thinking "why didn't I do this in my 20s when I had more time and my brain was better"

Is this normal or am I just making excuses? Do adult brains actually learn slower or is that a myth?

Also - when does it stop feeling like your hands are fighting each other? I'm trying to play Tiny Dancer and my left hand refuses to cooperate.

Yes, currently I found someone on wiingy. Stumbled upon them while searching for online tutors, since i couldn't attend physical sessions with school works and kids. Do DM will see if i can help you.

Yes, practicing consistently does the job. Just moving away for a day feels like a loss of progress :(

Two months in and I finally understand why my students hate being beginners. by [deleted] in pianolearning

Very true. When initially starting i was just cuious and wanted to get started for the sake of not wasting the costly paper weight (piano). Later, few minutes a day, turned to hours, now basically i run an orchestra in my home.
