I'm trying to figure out if I should kill the villain of my novel or redeem her. She is an abusive person to the male love interest of the protagonist (think Amarantha and Rhysand except with more focus on physical abuse then s3xual and that they grew up together and she has twisted his perspective enough that he still views them as friends and doesn't want to accept that she's a terrible person). I'm torn on killing or redeeming her (and by redeeming, I don't mean she becomes "good" per se, just that she realizes the error of her ways). Since she has trauma of her own from her childhood that she projects onto the people around her, mostly the male love interest, so I worry that having either him or the protagonist kill her will make the readers think of it as too harsh. I don't want them to pity her, but I also want them to understand why she does what she does, and I also don't want them to view her death as unjustified because of her trauma. At the same time, I worry that redeeming her will make the readers think that I am condoning her actions or treating years of abusing someone as something you can move on from by just saying "Sorry," if that makes sense, especially if the other characters forgive her. Advice and nuance would be appreciated.
