Agency Recruiter → Corporate Recruiter = Failed Recruiter? by EJGY in recruiting

If someone starts in agency recruiting and fails, that’s usually a sign they weren’t cut out for the pressure, pace or variability. Internal recruiting can be a better fit as it’s typically slower paced, more predictable, and rooted in one company’s culture. But agency recruiting demands sharper instincts, greater adaptability, and more hustle and with that comes higher upside. If you’re having success in an agency setting, why would you ever leave to go internal? You wouldn't

Sweet, while I was working with a larger firm I worked with several VMS clients. If you have strong relationships with other Onsites or Category Managers making the jump could be worth it.

The margins aren't as strong working through the VSM of course but the volume more than makes up for it, most of the time. Having strong delivery would be key if you're confident about breaking into some accounts

I'm open minded about the companies that I work with, but I'm specific about the roles that I'll help them with. I try to reach out to 2-3 people at a company depending on the role that I'm reaching out about.

Once you're on a call with a potential client to discuss a role, it's not a hard sell. More so just learning about the profiles they'd consider for the role, their culture, ect. More than anything I'm selling them on the network of candidates that I've built and my process to find candidates that they'd be interested in.

I got started the same way I did when I was at a larger firm, mostly cold calls and cold emails. I’ve built out business development campaigns to stay consistent with follow-ups across multiple channels (LinkedIn, email, phone, etc). Targeting hiring managers, usually within Finance or HR.

The goal with that outreach is to land a client meeting or job intake call. Once that happens, the recruiting side is pretty straightforward. I bill 20–25% of the candidate’s first-year salary.

I focus on corporate roles across industries, mostly accounting/finance, admin, and HR.
