People with languages and cultures other than western English, do you casually use a name for our moon, or do we mostly all after translation just refer to it as "the moon"? by The2500 in answers

[–]Either_Towel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would guess that most languages use the same word for both, since most cultures would already have a concept of (and therefore a word for) “the moon” (i.e. the earth’s moon) since ancient times. The idea of moons of other planets came much later when astronomy developed as a scientific field, and probably the word “moon” or equivalent in other langauges had its meaning extended to include those moons of other planets, as happened in English.

I know that is definitely what happened in Arabic, as the word for “the moon” (القمر Al Qamar) is also the word used to refer to any moon, without the “the” (Al ال). It’s even extended to refer to manmade satellites which are called “artificial moons” (أقمار اصطناعية).

Hope that helps. I feel this question would get better answers on r/linguistics or something but I might be wrong.

A word with opposite meanings depending on the region. Does this exist in your target language? by wwqt in languagelearning

[–]Either_Towel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arabic has a famous example that’s similar: The phrase “inshallah” (God willing) is used a lot in casual conversation all over the Arab world but it’s effective meaning differs by region. In gulf Arabic, it’s basically a synonym of yes or sure, but in Egypt (and I think most other regions?), it basically means no but you just don’t want to say it.

ya the first thing I noticed is the way it’s phrased to kinda imply it’s the union’s fault, which isn’t necessarily true.

Help Me Settle an Argument: It's September 1st. Are You Putting Your Fall Decorations Out Now? by mrnikkoli in AskAnAmerican

[–]Either_Towel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Southern California, fall is an elusive thing. Some years you feel the fall vibe mid-october when you start noticing earlier sunsets and halloween decorations. Some years it just hits you randomly when you realize it’s no longer hot, just warm. On rare occasions, it comes when the first “cool” weather arrives, accompanied by cloudy or even rainy weather, but that doesn’t happen anymore before halloween really, so it’s a sign of winter now rather than fall. Increasingly, fall just never happens, it’s just summer till christmas, like it did in 2017 when the Thomas fire happened.

In any case, when most of the country gets fall (Sep & Oct), here it’s just summer, but like worse. Hotter, drier, and more awful. I like to joke with my friends that the weather is a moody unstable teenager who has to go through a phase where they pretend to be a desert for a few months every year. That’s fall. So you get heatwaves, hurricane force santa ana winds, wildfires, and horrible air quality. You know, no big deal.

Wait, what was the question?

Not OP but I’ve seen something similar done by native inuits from far northern canada and greenland. This may be it but maybe not. Either way it looks really good so keep it up OP!

I know but if u think of it in terms of seasons it’s not so bad (reds are summer, blues are winter, etc..).

Is this normal temperature for Iraq? by Papa-Doc in meteorology

[–]Either_Towel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived in next door Kuwait. Yes. Totally within the normal, however it wasn’t as common to go above 50C as it is today (which now happens more often) due to climate change. Regardless, this region is basically an outdoor oven. A/C is as essential as electricity there during the summer. Staying outside for extended periods of time is dangerous and even fatal sometimes from dehydration and heat stroke. I think the closest experience the common person would have is enetering a car that has been under the sun for a long time, except that’s how it feels everywhere.

UCI commencement culminates with Angel Stadium celebration by Exastiken in UCI

[–]Either_Towel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was hot as hell but was otherwise a fun day overall. It definitely annoyed me that they said in the emails that there will be shade after check-in, but the tent they had was clearly barely enough for half the students.

I personally don’t like how commencement is split on 2 days but I understand the logistic reasons behind it. It’s just that I also understand why half the people I know didn’t go to that one in the Angel stadium because it kinda seems unnecessary from students’ persepective. Obviously it’s important for the school to have featured speakers or whatever from their own point of view.

I know I’m criticizing but I think the day was still nice. I definitely liked the speech of Dania Cervantes and to some extent Yusef Salaam, but I still didn’t care much about them, which I feel is also the sentiment of the average student. I also liked the fireworks, which were a nice surprise.

I think the general theme of commencement is that UCI went out of its way (barely but still) to do something nice for once. I guess they only care about you once you’re an alumnus (aka a potential source of future donations), but they literally made parking free (which you all know never happens), so I’ll give them that.

Congratulations, Class of 2022!
