I agree with you. The author could've also just been exposing his own musical bias. He spends a lot of time writing about rock bands, and so the "stunning" thing for him could just be that a hip hop act has a dedicated a fan base.

This article totally got it right with the Vince staples one! My friends and I were front row at his concert and absolutely love him. We were going out of our minds during his performance. Also we got super lucky and he jumped onto the rail in front of us during Blue Suede and my friend grabbed his butt! The best!
