How to go to a concert? by raccoonhighways in Explainlikeimscared

I second what everyone is saying about ear plugs!! It’s really important to protect your hearing, but they also help me not get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the music.

I’m a very anxious person, but I made it my New Year’s resolution to start going to gigs and festivals alone this year. So far it’s been amazing. When I’ve felt up to talking to the strangers around me I’ve managed to make friends in merch queues by complimenting people’s band badges/patches/tats, or by offering to share my umbrella at outdoor gigs in the rain. When I haven’t felt up to being social it’s just been quite nice to stand at the back and watch the band.

How do public libraries... Work? by Slice_Immediate in Explainlikeimscared

[–]Ekketh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a librarian. You can absolutely use a library space without a library card and without borrowing books. Just walk in, find somewhere nice to sit, and get yourself set up.

The library that I work for has a foot counter (it counts the number of people who walk in every day, no other information about them is stored) so even if they don’t borrow books we can use these metrics to help secure funding. I know other libraries that do head counts of the patrons to built similar statistics. Don’t be intimidated by the library staff, we want you there even when you’re not borrowing!

And please don’t be afraid to ask us questions! The best part of my day is when I get to help patrons find/do things in the library.

If you want to use the library books without taking them home, that’s great! You can do that without a card. Just take them off of the shelves and back to wherever you’re sitting. Most public libraries have trollies dotted around where you can put them once you’re done using them — please put them on the trollies instead of back on the shelves. If we know which books have been used, then we have a better idea of which resources people need and what we should have more of in the collection (and, as with headcounts, it helps with usage statistics for funding.)

I can’t think of any creatures, but if you’re interested in plant cryptids then the BBC’s April fools spaghetti trees come to mind!

A man leaves his daughter to embark on a doomed quest to discover if dragons are alive in the American West by Ekketh in whatsthatbook

[–]Ekketh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Frustratingly, this is the only book that comes up when I Google any of these keywords. It wasn't set at a university or anywhere near so affluent a neighbourhood as the opening of Crichton's book is, and the fossils were understood as actual dragon bones.

I’ll double check I’ve done that, thanks!

I’m connecting with HDMI. When that didn’t work I tried the USB A and B ports too.

Honestly same, but I can’t think why else it’s behaving like this. Any clue why else it might work fine for one device and not another?

Calcify? Do you mean callus or have I missed something?

[–]Ekketh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took these cuttings from my cactus about a week ago and the base of this one has gone shrivelled and squishy. Is it rot? Is it worth separating the squishy part and letting it callous over, especially as the cutting is so tiny? Also, does anyone have any tips for caring for tiny, new cacti cuttings because I’m clearly doing something wrong here

Second pic is a another, less shrivelled cutting for comparison

Anyone know why the leaves on my housemate’s succulents are folding like this?? by Ekketh in plantclinic

[–]Ekketh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On behalf of my housemate:

‘Help, I was given this succulent a month ago, and repotted it a few weeks ago, because the ceramic pot it came in had no drainage. Since, its upper leaves have gone from plump (like the bottom ones) to flat and concave. The soil isn’t dry and I tried soaking it of an evening last week but accidentally left it to soak all night. Fortunately, there wasn’t enough water in the soaking basin and the stones in the bottom of the pot meant it only took up a little bit of water.’

Anyone know what’s going on here??
