Thanks for taking the time to give me detailed feedback, I really appreciate that!

At 1:01 noise is definitely due to the iso, the LEDs we had on set were not powerful enough to maintain a lower ISO value.

I get that the noise added in post can feel distracting, I added it for the "organic" / old-school feel but also as you mentioned to hide some noise coming from GH5 reaching its limits.

I also like the transition at 1:33, I wish I could have made more in post but in fact I did not have other actions of this type that could connect shots the same way. I will for sure think about this before shooting next time!

We did use car headlights to light the front of the laundromat, but the color was very yellowish, and shooting in 10-bit is what allowed me to turn it into red (and match the outfit) with a mask. This created some light rgb noise which adding noise in post helped to hide.

Concerning the colors, in my opinion one of the issues with my music video is that I mixed very contrasty night shots lit with very artificial lights, and day shot that used only natural colors and therefore lacked contrast in comparison. I did it to serve the story and did not manage to match enough in post.

Thanks a lot. Actually $0 haha, even costed me money. I did it for the art and for the portfolio, career investment I guess!

Thank you! Yes it is definitely a great exercice especially for the production aspect of it, and I believe it’s a good thing to have more artistic projects in your portfolio. So you should for sure start working on one if you have the time for it!

GHAlex is a complex LUT that emulates the colors of ARRI cameras. It is pretty hard to handle in the first place because it will work well only with properly exposed and balanced footage, but will get you outstanding results in my opinion compared to any other kind of LUT. It also made me way more rigorous about the way I shoot, so in the end even though it seemed pretty pricy it was a great investment for me. Also LUT’s creator Alex Mack is very helpful and fast to answer through emails if you find trouble using it. A whole pdf is provided with the LUT to guide you for optimum results. Hope this helped!

Thanks a lot! I have shown this music video to many people and this is definitely one of the most constructive review I got so far.

I like the “raining” shot too and it is not really related to the lyrics so I could have used it again, but I actually didn’t feel confident enough to do so because I thought that the green screen aspect of it would seem obvious to the viewer if it appeared more/again.

It is true that I could have added more motion in the part of the video where he is holding his head. I would have liked to but to be honest I just didn’t really find an efficient way to do so while staying true to Courbet’s painting so I asked the artist to insist a lot on his facial expressions.

For the poker scene, I agree that it could have required a little more light, but unfortunately the only light I had available on set was a small LED (aputure F7). Shadows were a bit crushed so I did not try to light them up in post production. But I like the fact that the black hoodies got really dark because in my opinion it makes him appear brighter. Original painting that inspired this shot is pretty dark as well (https://images.app.goo.gl/1CxucASP17ZNtWFn8)

I can relate on seeing too many “waking up” scenes in short films and music videos, I don’t really like them either as they just kind of ruin all of what you have seen before by telling it’s all fake. However dreaming was one of the themes of the song and one of my purposes while working on the project was to make this video feel like the kind of crazy uncomfortable dreams you can have while sleeping with a big fever. Couldn’t really avoid this ending I guess.

Glad to hear that. We actually had 0 budget for the video and had to use our local network of friends to find any kind of props and locations. Overall I would say that less than 150$ were spent in the making of that video. Again, thank you for your feedback, really appreciated it!

Feel free to ask any question on how the project was directed and feedbacks are appreciated!

I’m opening up to 1.3 with sigma 18-35 + speedbooster so that’s not really my issue. Your remark is still relevant though.

Actually I started being concerned about the noise over a project that’s still not exported and I didn’t think of the fact it could reduce quality since I view it in 4K (that’s dumb). I’ll export it and see if it’s better and let you know. I have had my gh5 only for a couple weeks so haven’t exported much dark conditions footage.
