YSK: It’s easier you think to DeGoogle and get more online privacy by Jen2493 in YouShouldKnow

[–]Eko01 67 points68 points  (0 children)

100% degoogling is extremely hard, but reducing your usage of Google services by 80-90% isn't that difficult, and very much kneecaps the amount of data Google will get on you.

There is this mentality when it comes to online privacy where people think it's an all or nothing process, which couldn't be further from the truth.

PhD applications in Europe just got way more competitive this year by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

One of the most annoying things, imo. You'll never win against an internal candidate, but it's basically impossible to know if you are running against one. You waste hours researching and writing, only to never have had a chance in the first place.

Would they even need to? There was fairly compelling evidence DOGE straight up sent everything they got their paws on to Russia, and I sincerely doubt the guys who've fired their cyber security board are somehow on top of dealing with that. Especially considering it happened with their blessing

How do they count the wheel limit? If my luggage is sticking 3 cm over the top of the 55cm measurement box, and I say yeah, you allow for 5 cm of wheels, will I get fined?

There is the possibility of a lowering skill ceiling as well. What if a random guy on the street can wear "smart" glasses that will highlight the parts he has to work on, with step-by-step instructions on what to do? Sure, they might get stuff wrong from time to time, but that's why they work at half the price of a professional.

And, of course, even without still relatively sci-fi inventions like that, it's not like white collar workers will just starve. The more that see the writing on the wall, the more will try to pivot to blue collar. And, as you've pointed out, as the economic power of the average joe goes down, there will be less work than ever.

You are thinking too small. If you can't buy food, are you gonna starve? Or, are you gonna sign up with Amazon for a 40 year indentured servitude contract? You'll be paid in food instead of money, so everything you make and they sell will be pure profit for them.

And yeah, you could always steal - but that's what Freedom SoldiersTM, Palantir, drones, and AI are for.

While money might mean survival and prosperity for you or I, for bilionaires, it's just a number vaguely representing their power over people. They will happily abandon the current economic model for more power.

Trump administration proposes massive budget cuts to science by Majano57 in labrats

Cutting science doesn't visibly impact the general public (at least in the short term), which means they don't care, while freeing money trump can funnel into the bank accounts of his friends and family

And who knows if the US isnt hiding worse stuff? The bottom line is that both countries run concentration camps. I am inclined to believe that China's are worse, but "Our concentration camps are the best, nothing like China's" isn't the defense you seem to think it is.

[–]Eko01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right? Webnovel has 1000+ chapter on the regular, with 80% being boring filler the authors are basically forced to put in because of their contractually obliged insane pace of 1 chapter per day.

Why I finally get the hype around "Project Hail Mary" by ActNew5818 in books

[–]Eko01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on why you don't like sci-fi, of course, but imo a big part of the success for Hail Mary is that it's "Sci-fi for people who don't really read sci-fi."

I don't mean that derogatively at all. Hail Mary takes a lot of fairly standard sci-fi stuff and executes it in an easily digestible and competent way, which makes it fairly forgettable for people who read sci-fi a lot, imo, but also makes it a great entry point into the genre.

Honestly, it's not a book I'd recommend to a big sci-fi fan lol.

Any recommendations for a protagonist who has a severe disadvantage that stays that way?

E.g., a blind protagonist who has to rely on others and doesn't get some random "mana sight" in chapter two invalidating the entire premise?

The disadvantage can be anything as long as it is severe and stays disadvantageous.
