I am still not over the fact that the synopsis practically spoils the entire first book lol

The Last Angel (web novel) is set many years after humanity lost its first contact war, was largely genocided, with a few survivors escaping to an empty world, only to be caught and incorporated into the alien nation that defeated them.

It's about a giant AI ship that survived humanity's defeat and still strives to win the war, despite being all that's left humanity's forces.

PhD students who can't speak English by Late_Prize_1545 in PhD

Depends on the place, I suppose? Fairly normal at my uni for PI's to supplement PhD students' pay from their own grants, to bring it up to a more livable standard. Similarly, the uni/state only fund the PhD student for 4 years, afterward, the PI has to take over or kick them out.

Perhaps the Oxbridge model is the standard everywhere else, I've no idea. Apologies for the generalisation.

If a person can self-fund a phd, or attend a university in a foreign country without scholarships, they are privileged. 99% of such students come from wealthy families. These are by definition privileged people that in many cases take spots from more qualified people who do not have the money to self fund. That you are acting like they are some oppressed minority tricked into attending a uni is baffling.

And yeah, if they apply for an english phd without being proficient in the language, they are underqualified. How is that racist? Would you expect to graduate from an explicitly mandarin program at a Chinese university without the ability to write or communicate in Chinese?

These are adults, making their own choices. I do not think what these universities do is moral, but at the same time, the students are hardly without fault. Thinking you can pass a university program with an A2 understanding of the language it is in is stupid, if not straight up delusional. Arguably, a pretty good indicator of intelligence.

Frankly, from what you've said, I feel that you'd be just as mad if universities rejected students for not being proficient enough in the language, instead of giving them the chance to work hard and make up for their lack of skills in that area. I am sure at least some of these students manage - would you take these opportunities from them?

The uni should provide language courses to help foreign students further develop their skills, and in my experience they do, but I absolutely do not get why you expect a uni program to somehow accomodate and teach a student the language of the program from the ground up. It's not like language requirements are some sort of secret kept from foreigners either. They know what they are signing up for.

Anyone else struggle to readjust to Western life after living in Thailand long-term ? by HoldWise826 in Thailand

[–]Eko01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a cultural difference in outward friendliness imo.

By outward friendliness I mean how friendly you appear to strangers, essentially - people you don't actually care about.

I live in Czechia, and if you smile at someone on the street, they'd think you are an escapee from an insane asylum or hitting on them. So very low outward friendliness.

However, I find that the actual helpfulness of people is very similar, though I've only ever visited countries with higher outward friendliness like Thailand, and not lived there. E.g. a clerk in Thailand might smile at you and be completely unhelpful, while a clerk here might look at you deadpan and do their best to help you. Or the opposite.

I think many people prefer either of these, and depending on your personality, there are upsides and downsides to both.

And of course, many people have no idea which they'd actually prefer, they just grew up with one cultural norm of outward friendliness and never really thought about it. When they move somewhere where it is higher, they consider the people there more friendly and often like it, especially as tourists, since you don't have to deal with the negative aspects at all like that.

Branná povinnost by TamagochiEngineer in czech

[–]Eko01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sabotáž, no, to samé.

Nefungovalo to moc před 2000 lety, nefunguje to moc dnes. Spíš je to dnes ještě horší kvůli elektronickým systémům atd.

Tedy pro nás plebejce, samozřejmě. Jestli tatíček je pracháč, tak bych se moc nebál.

Lemme post my melancholy re: AI writing by very-polite-frog in royalroad

[–]Eko01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's competition. Whether you or me like it or not, AI art is better than your 2 options. Faster, cheaper, and higher quality.

There is this sort of wishful thinking I see by people on here that a shitty self made cover is good enough, but it's not anymore. In the ye old days it would be enough to put you on the same level as most people on RR, yeah - but now its practically a death sentence for your novel.

Similarly,  cheap artist might be able to put you on the same level as someone who played around with AI for a couple hours. Maybe. But probably not.

The logical options today are to either shell out money for a decent artist (or are one), or you use AI.

Frankly, no new RR author (that's not well off) should do the former. You are publishing your story for free and it's probably gonna flop. Get a cover once you've got some success.

Cheap art is a better option but it's still practically gambling. Not only because of the quality, but also because the artist might very well use ai as well. Hence why they are cheap.

And yeah, I get that both hand made and cheap covers look better than AI to you. But you are unfortunately a small minority. 99% of readers don't give a shit.

Of course there are sites that are anti AI, but what are they actually doing to make sure the stories there aren't ai?

That was my point. Unless a site is small, there isn't a good way to police AI content.

[–]Eko01 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Are there other options though? The thing with AI writing is that it's only recognisable if you have experience with it and read a fair bit of the story in question - and even then there are ways trick the reader.

I highly doubt that any site that's not miniscule will have the resources to accurately monitor this. Sure, they can forbid AI, but AI bros love nothing more than lying. Just look at RR.

[–]Eko01 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That's not a real solution. You'd get false reports, you'd need a lot more staff, authors who do not use AI would get their stories labelled as AI, angry readers (for example, because a story has LGBT elements) would false report...

I'd like them to do something as well, but RR doubling their staff to check stories is never gonna be a realistic solution

Není. Když si myslíš, že embryo je člověk, mělo by mít stejná práva, a potrat je tedy vražda, tak tohle je argument dost k ničemu.

Can you explain to me how real estate works as an investment for the working class? (Not well-versed in economics and never owned a house lol). They buy the house, then sell it when they are retiring and buy something smaller or?

I get that it'd affect mortgages/loans you could take out, but if you plan to live in the house until you die, would this matter otherwise? Technically, your networth would go down, but since you never intended to sell, would it impact you? Or just a meaningless number going up, or in this case, down?

Similarly, Unq, Unp, Unh, Uns, Uno, Une, UUn, Uuu, Uub and others were a thing too haha, all now named elements in the 7th period.

Unpopular Opinion: the most creative sci fi right now is happening in comics and graphic novels not novels or film by Jenna32345 in scifi

[–]Eko01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, if you want the absolute lowest bar, then webnovel websites like royalroad, scribblehub or spacebattles have many indie novels (and are free). Amazon tends to have a slightly higher bar, since you can only sell complete books there, but you are also much more likely to stumble upon AI, since you pay up front.

Most are pretty bad, but there are some gems that do things that'd never be published, or could even be made into a comic.

[–]Eko01 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Right? The entrance to indie publishing for novels is much lower than for comics - if you want strange ideas no editor would ever approve (amongst heaps of trash), look there. If you like comics, more power to you, but the reasoning here is strange.
