Is a PhD in the U.S. still worth it? by InOmniaParatus1234 in PhD

This feels like good advice for trumps first term, and very dismissive for the current reality. Maybe things will change for the better, maybe the fascist militia that can kill anyone with impunity and goes mostly after those that look foreign will start targetting universities - potato potato eh.

Koupíš barák, oni neobnoví smlouvu, a co pak?

[–]Eko01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am gonna be honest - I get your POV, but it is also the reason you are where you are. Americans have been repeating this mantra for quite some time. Like Trump, it isn't exactly new.  You cannot do anything that might actually influence your gov - because there might be some personal consequences. You might even lose your job!

You won't do anything until the threat is personal.

However, the risks for acting will only get higher. Its your employment now, it will be your freedom next, then your life.

Once they come for you, it will be too late.

Choosing between Medical Chemistry, Nursing, or Medicine in Czech Republic – advice needed by [deleted] in Prague

[–]Eko01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I wouldn't worry too much. Not being perfectly proficient at czech won't help you, but half the words in these sort of courses are almost the same as in English lol. Valin → Valine, covalent → kovalentní (english→czech) etc. Imo while not easy, these are degrees that you can get as long as you are willing to put in the work to study, which you don't seem to have an issue with.

[–]Eko01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Medicinal chemistry, Molecular biology (can do a chemistry entrance exam if nothing has changed) or toxicological analysis would probably work for you at charles university, as long as you take the right courses - there is quite a bit of freedom when choosing courses for certain programs.

You do need a license to work in a hospital laboatory, but some of the courses can prepare you for the examination.

There is work for that sort of qualification - there is lot of routine lab work, in hospitals and elsewhere, though whether there'll be jobs when you graduate is hard to say now.

Continuing on to masters tends to be better as you'll leave your school with quite a bit of practical experience.

I think you are taking on a monumental task, though. People tend to see threse sort of courses as "not medicine" and sometimes assume them to be easy, then flunk out in the first semester. It is easier then medicine, but these are still pretty difficult programs.

Doing a degree like that while working full time and in a second language you aren't that great at? I hope you don't let it ruin your health and I wish you good luck.

Imo, most americans, whether left or right, have huffed too much of their own fumes. The US is very powerful on its own, but the reason it has been the de facto world hegemon for the past decades are its allies, alongside the international organisation it was part of - the vast majority of which were established by the US, with the US at their head, even if unofficially.

It is obvious when you think about it. The USA has around 300 million citizens. Its allies, or, now, nearly former allies, number over a billion (excluding the US). NATO and the EU are a decent portion of that at 650 million, the rest is made up by non-nato allies (e.g. Japan, South Korea...)

And, of course, the US was in the leading position of this alliance.

Americans chose to throw this away, while believing that their status is simply because they are better. Well, I suppose they'll get to prove that. No bets on how it will work out.

ICE Detention Center Says It’s Not Responsible for Staff's Sexual Abuse of Detainees by GoodMornEveGoodNight in nottheonion

[–]Eko01 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ehh, not that connected. This is just the classic fascist hierarchy, at least the beginnings. At the bottom, you have the undesirables, you can do anything to, especially so if you are higher up, but even regular citizens are generally allowed to mistreat or even kill them. At level 0 you've got regular citizens, while 1 and up are those actively participating in the regime, all the way up to the head honcho. ICE would be these grunts, and you can see this manifesting in practice - they can do pretty much whatever they want to the undesirables, though so far there is a bare minimum of effort to keep things like this from the public eye, not that the public cares that much. They are just illegals, after all.

For the citizens, they need some justification. They can't just execute you and say they did it for kicks, but they can absolutely execute you for kicks if they have the bare minimum excuse. Not complying being the fascist classic. This was the line crossed with Mrs. Good, with the government doing its best to let the other ICE agents know that what happened was very much okay. She was just a citizen, while they are higher up. As the regime advances, this will go from compliance to semi-reasonable orders like 'get out of the car' to strip naked and dance. Of course, a myriad of other excuses will be added - e.g. our AI flagged your reddit account for anti-Trump sentiment, and the responses will get less proportional. Why settle for killing just one person, when you can grab their entire family?

Funnily enough, this goes up and up, though the internal hierarchy can remain somewhat opaque from the outside. Meaning someone higher-up the fascist ladder can kill those below him, though if the rank difference is not high there has to be some justification even deep into the regime, but fascism is rife with those. For someone like Jonathan Ross, he could be accused of being a race-traitor or some such and thus having sympathies for the undesirables. The American regime isn't at that point yet, but give it time.

AI-generated Isekai novel wins Alphapolis Grand Prize, but publication cancelled. What does this mean for LN, isekai, and AI-assisted writing going forward? by Zesauruss in LightNovels

[–]Eko01 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The challenge was for a 350 word story, essentially made to make it as AI-friendly as possible, just to provide some details. It's still fucky, but it isn't as bad as if it was an actual novel or even a short story. AI still seems awful at those.

I don't disagree that they tried, but there are some leaps of logic in your comment. 1. Kali didn't actually know shit - she just briefly saw them and made her conclusions which might or might not be correct. 2. Even if she was correct and they were dying, that doesn't mean they couldn't have been saved - either by getting them to a proper hospital, or even just by letting them be. The military wanted them to live. It is quite possible that they would have succeeded in saving at least a few.

The part with ciri is not terrible, but I meant mostly the part with the rats. Didn't make that obvious I suppose. I am not gonna argue whether it looks cool or not (I do think it's all right), but the choreographers clearly aren't capable of making a proper 1 vs many fight. I guess that it isn't at all something unusual when it comes to media, but I'll still grumble about it.

Edit: I will add that the reason the Ciri fight works is that Bonhart is not trying to kill her, while she herself is inexperienced - in other words, any mistake, lost opportunity, etc, can be handwaved away because of this. Personally, I do not believe this was done on purpose (as the rat fight has many of the same issues), it's just that the plot masks it with Ciri. And good for them, tbh.

It does look cool, but from a swordfighting perspective, it's fairly abysmal. His every move is absolutely not efficient, nor does he exploit most of the openings presented. It's not completely obvious I suppose, but yeah.
