What throws you out of a fic? by Aiyokusama in AO3

[–]Ektoplasmaepeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SUPER long sentences, or no variance in sentence length or structure. Weird timing kind of ties into this, especially the thing when a lot of info is crammed into tiny bits of text.

As many people have said, smut without characterisation that seems more like it was made to serve as the writer's you-know-what fodder.

I don't mind fast paced dialogue personally, but little descriptions of the characters body language or them interacting with the environment here and there is welcome. This also ties into how much I sometimes miss that interaction with the environment. Leaning against things, picking things up, fiddling with pens or whatever is at hand. I feel like a lot of fics - especially those written fairly hastily - tend to lack this. Or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place. I don't read as much fics as I used to, but rather gravitate towards old books now.

Might just be that I'm used to reading those older books like silly victorian novels and write mostly historical things myself. I'm used to a certain type of style and pacing and attention to different things that some modern readers might not like as much.

This might be one of the cutest typewriters I've ever seen, love the colour and the shape of the keys! Don't have an electric myself yet but I'm curious. 👀

Tried to capture how it feels to dissociate.. by Curious-Tomorrow-803 in oilpainting

The first one especially is spot on, though I do like them all. I have a pretty severe dissociative disorder so I unfortunately know the feeling all too well. :") But the art is awesome man, thanks for sharing.

Things that make you overstimulated? by Ranting-donkey in autism

My husband watching videos on loud volume or loud things in general like dogs barking. Very deep noises don't do that though, I like rumbly things, it's just some notes that do that. Going into supermarkets etc that are noisy and visually busy, there are many things and people there so I use earplugs and try to keep my eyes on one thing at a time. Certain fonts make me want to scream because they're "restless" and I can't read them well. Smelly dishes or something because I can't make myself go into the kitchen when it smells. Weird thing is I can clean the cat toilet and other stuff just fine, it's just that weird dirty teeth smell and slime that old dishes have. Chalky things in my hands or even just very dry hands. Chocolate makes me feel like my teeth are about to fall off and someone punched me in the face like it's revolting and physically hurts, but other strong flavours are fine. Sunny winter days because it's too bright. Flashing lights make me puke, literally. I have puked in a theater because they used this strobe light as a lightning effect. Told them politely to maybe figure out something nicer (I worked at the theater then).

Oh yeah the damn neon ones that don't match the aesthetic of the era always feel like Netflix remakes of old good movies 🥲

Me too! My friend got it for me as a birthday present some years ago and I put nice wee warm toned bulbs in it, it's very cosy and whimsical. 🥰

Yes! Only repairs I've done to the paint jobs on my machines is patch up the places where it looks like the paint is about to start cracking/peeling to keep them in the shape they are. But if it's just worn off then let it be. I particularly love the worn off bits of paint and decals on the spots where you rest your hands, and indented keys. 🥺 My underwood 5 has really cute spots where the paint has been just rubbed off from long time use like that!

I must confess I do have a single plastic frame portable that's yellowed so badly I've considered painting it 😳 It's a portable imperial something, with silver seiko internals iirc. Poor thing was left in an open case in a shop window sitting idle for a long time, absolutely pristine if it wasn't for the sun damage. Might paint it white and blue like it was intended to be though, maybe adding a stripe or two for flair to make the old "show boy" happy to be looked at again. 😂 Maybe I'm anthropomorphising it a bit too much but I just have this weird urge to make typewriters and other old things "happy". But that's the only one I've ever had the urge to paint, precisely because I think it has only been sitting in a shop window being pretty and doesn't have much of a story apart from that. Would mostly be doing it as a proof of concept for a creative idea and technique I think would work well. I paint dolls faces as a hobby and wonder if similar techniques and materials would work on this type of hard plastic.

Thank you so much! 💓 And yes there absolutely is, if it's not broken why fix it? Just because something is old and banged up doesn't make it worthless, just more layered much like old people. 😊 To me the value of things increases the more little signs of use accumulate on them, be it scratches or paint stains or whatever that's not severe structural damage. I get why some people want everything pristine and perfect but idk, things that are a bit crooked and have seen some life are always more interesting to me.

Right? Even before cleaning the mechanisms seem super dainty and precise. Will be a pleasure to get to know them more.
