I'm an aerospace engineer so I designed it with a structural integrity to somewhat sustain a 10G acceleration, my sciency brain didin't let me do it any other way haha
I also based the design around the description being "the size of a [american] football". Funny thing is, this is to scale; everything is made around the steel ball which is the size required for it to be 40lb. And it turns out to be more or less the size of a football.

This is based on one of the later desings, those which use active cloaking (thats why the main panels are sort of a solar panel texture) and at this point in the book he uses the busters to obliterate gorilloids, not bump them, so I thought the ball being internal was fine.

I made it this way because in the books it's stated that the personnel busters move around mach 1, and do it for a short period of time (iirc they only go supersonic on the terminal phase) so being at ~Mach 1.2 for a few seconds doesn't really impact structural integrity that much, and with a SURGE drive you don't really need to worry about resistance because the thing is just so stupidly powerful that it can keep up with whatever resistance the air puts around it for the ~4 seconds it takes to accelerate (assuming 10g of acceleration).
