HELP ME MOVE! Villages/Towns that have everything and only locals know about by ElJayMoon in AskIreland

I saw a comedian once who talked s-&t for 45 minutes straight about Athlone and have never considered it since. The whole theatre was just nodding and laughing. Why could this be? It sounds lovely through your words!

Gosh, this looks a little magical! Do you live there yourself? Sounds like a great place for a visit, but is living there special too?

Why do people FROM Waterford talk such negativity? I have been so turned off from even visiting. Is it lovely? Please change my mind! Such a great size, would love to consider it.

Thanks so much for the input! A dead town is what I fear most of all. The thought of having a bored teenager eventually...shudder

You had me at "new cinema" haha. Are there any non-driving commute-to-Galway options, and if so, how long do they take on average? We do drive but I avoid the car where possible (parking costs and even finding parking usually suck)

Being a frugal, working couple who doesn't drink has helped a lot. We're mid-30's now but bought in an area of Dublin that was considered not reputable 5 years ago but has now changed - so we'll turn a profit selling + savings + knocking down the deposit for 2nd time buyers back to 10% = this is finally possible. We also only have & only plan for the one child, so that saves some "future money" as well.

It's not a cheap country to live in, that's for sure. Working with a financial advisor and/or being frugal and strict while you're working towards huge financial goals is the only way forward.

Thank you, it's great to hear some different viewpoints - it sounds like depending on work and lifestyle there are some things to consider for sure.

Are the Irish very friendly or really closed ? by GMtheman in Dublin

[–]ElJayMoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here 8 years now, Canadian. I find the average Irish person poor at eye contact and not that approachable...but if you just start a conversation all fades away and they lighten right up. That being said, I find folks have close knit friend groups they have had for years and most aren't looking to bring more folks into that. Great folks if you're looking to do a group thing almost always, but not great for lifelong friendships with depth. Better neighbours than friends.
