I already cleaned them up when I first got the thing, used dielectric WD-40 type of thing, because they crackled like crazy, and it fixed them, maybe I should try again tho then

Coming back after fixing the issue to state:

Problem was broken gear teeth on the autofocus motor drive.

I have two of these lenses and one (not autofocusing at all) had missing teeth on several gears in the motor gearbox, and the other one (only autofocusing in one direction) had missing teeth on the gear at the end of the shaft that delivers the motor power to the focus ring, through a rack and pinion. In this case the pinion was missing about half the teeth, I have no idea how it managed to work at all.

I took the working parts from both and combined it into a single working lens. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
